Chapter 4 - The Mafia Don’s Unexpected Protection

Chloe Cole had spent her entire life believing that money could solve almost any problem.

A large enough bank account could open doors.

A powerful enough name could silence enemies.

A successful enough husband could protect a family from the world.

But as she sat alone in the guest room of Roman Costa’s mansion, staring at the unfamiliar walls surrounding her, she realized she had been wrong.

Money had not protected her.

Her husband’s name had not protected her.

And the man she trusted most had been the person who destroyed everything.

The room was beautiful.

Almost too beautiful.

A large bed with white silk sheets.

A fireplace burning softly in the corner.

A view of Manhattan’s glowing skyline through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Everything was designed for comfort.

Yet Chloe felt trapped.

Not because of Roman.

Because of the truth.

Her phone sat on the table beside her.

The screen was filled with notifications.

News alerts.

Messages.

Unknown numbers.

She knew she should not look.

But she already knew she would.

Her hands trembled as she picked up the phone.

The first headline appeared immediately.

COLE LOGISTICS CEO HARRISON COLE ACCUSED OF MASSIVE FINANCIAL FRAUD

Her heart tightened.

The second headline was worse.

WIFE OF BILLIONAIRE CEO LINKED TO COMPANY SCANDAL

Chloe stared at the words.

Her own name.

Her own reputation.

Destroyed within hours.

She opened the article.

The story was carefully written.

Too carefully.

It described Harrison as a victim.

A businessman who discovered financial irregularities.

A man forced to leave the country to protect himself.

And Chloe?

She was described as someone who had access to company finances.

Someone who may have participated.

Someone who benefited.

She dropped the phone onto the bed.

“No…”

The word came out quietly.

Almost like a child refusing to accept something painful.

She covered her face with both hands.

Harrison had planned everything.

Every step.

Every excuse.

Every lie.

A knock interrupted her thoughts.

Chloe quickly wiped her eyes.

“Come in.”

The door opened.

Roman stood there.

Not his guards.

Not an employee.

Him.

He entered slowly, holding a folder.

“You saw the news.”

It was not a question.

Chloe looked away.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t tell me before?”

“I wanted you to see it yourself.”

She looked at him sharply.

“Why?”

“Because hearing it from me would make it seem like manipulation.”

Roman placed the folder on the table.

“I needed you to understand that Harrison has already started his attack.”

Chloe looked at the folder.

“What is that?”

“Evidence.”

She hesitated.

Then opened it.

Inside were copies of financial documents.

Emails.

Transaction records.

Everything connected to Harrison’s crimes.

But there was something else.

A document with her signature.

Her eyes widened.

“That’s not mine.”

Roman nodded.

“I know.”

Chloe looked at him.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why is my signature on it?”

“Because someone copied it.”

A cold feeling moved through her.

“He forged my signature.”

“Yes.”

The room became silent.

Chloe stared at the paper.

For years, she had believed she knew Harrison.

She remembered their first meeting.

A charity event.

She had been standing near a painting, pretending to understand the artist’s meaning.

Harrison approached her and joked that he also had no idea what the painting meant.

She laughed.

That was how it started.

Simple.

Normal.

Human.

She never imagined the same man would one day create fake documents to send her to prison.

“I don’t understand,” she whispered.

Roman watched her.

“What?”

“Why?”

The question was not about the money.

Not about the fraud.

It was about Harrison.

“Why would someone do this to the person they promised to love?”

Roman’s expression became distant.

“Because some people love what others provide.”

Chloe looked at him.

“Not who they are?”

“Exactly.”

The answer stayed with her.

Because suddenly she wondered if Harrison ever loved her.

Or if he loved the image of her.

The wealthy wife.

The perfect partner.

The woman who made his life look complete.

A woman he could sacrifice when things went wrong.

A knock came again.

This time, one of Roman’s men entered.

“Sir.”

Roman turned.

“What?”

“We found something.”

The man placed a tablet on the table.

Roman looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

Chloe noticed immediately.

“What is it?”

Roman didn’t answer at first.

The man spoke.

“Harrison made another move.”

Chloe’s stomach tightened.

“What move?”

The man looked at her.

“He contacted the media.”

Roman handed the tablet to Chloe.

She looked.

A video was playing.

Harrison.

Sitting in a luxury hotel room.

Looking tired.

Concerned.

Like a victim.

“My wife had access to several company accounts,” Harrison said in the video.

Chloe felt sick.

“I trusted her completely. I never imagined she would betray me.”

The video continued.

Harrison’s fake sadness.

His carefully chosen words.

His performance.

“He’s making people hate me.”

Roman watched Chloe.

“Yes.”

“Can you stop him?”

The question escaped before she could think.

Roman’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“I can.”

The confidence in his voice was unsettling.

“How?”

Roman looked at the screen.

“People like Harrison survive because they control the story.”

A pause.

“Take away the story, and they have nothing.”

Chloe looked at him.

“You’re talking like this happens often.”

Roman did not answer.

That silence told her enough.

“You’ve done this before.”

“I fix problems.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Roman looked at her.

“No. It isn’t.”

For some reason, his honesty surprised her.

Most powerful people lied.

Roman simply chose what truths to reveal.

Chloe sat down.

Her emotions were exhausted.

“I don’t want revenge.”

Roman studied her.

“No?”

“No.”

She looked at the city outside.

“I want my name back.”

That answer seemed to interest him.

“Not his downfall?”

“I don’t care what happens to him.”

Her hand moved to her stomach.

“I care about my child growing up knowing their mother wasn’t a criminal.”

For the first time, Roman’s expression softened.

Very slightly.

“You’re not thinking like someone who was betrayed.”

Chloe looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

“You’re thinking like a mother.”

The words affected her more than she expected.

Because Harrison had forgotten that.

He had forgotten the baby.

He had forgotten the family they were supposed to become.

A few hours later, Chloe sat in Roman’s private office.

She expected a criminal’s headquarters.

Something dark.

Something intimidating.

Instead, she found a room filled with books, documents, and photographs.

Roman was working.

Not drinking.

Not celebrating.

Working.

“You don’t look like the person everyone describes.”

Roman didn’t look up.

“That’s because people only describe what they fear.”

Chloe looked around.

“Are they wrong?”

“No.”

The answer was immediate.

She looked back at him.

“That’s not comforting.”

“It wasn’t meant to be.”

Despite everything, Chloe almost smiled.

Almost.

Roman noticed.

“You almost laughed.”

“I didn’t.”

“You did.”

She looked away.

“I’m still angry.”

“You should be.”

At that moment, one of Roman’s security phones rang.

The room changed instantly.

Roman answered.

His face became serious.

“What happened?”

A pause.

“Are you sure?”

Another pause.

Then his expression hardened.

“Keep him alive until I arrive.”

He ended the call.

Chloe felt a chill.

“What happened?”

Roman picked up his coat.

“We found one of Harrison’s partners.”

“Someone who knows the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Are you going to hurt him?”

Roman stopped.

He looked at her.

“No.”

She seemed surprised.

“I thought…”

“You thought I was a monster.”

Chloe said nothing.

Roman continued.

“Sometimes people confuse fear with cruelty.”

He put on his coat.

“I want answers.”

“About Harrison?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Roman looked at her.

“Because your husband didn’t just steal money from me.”

A pause.

“He endangered everyone connected to him.”

Chloe stood.

“What does that mean?”

Roman’s eyes became cold.

“It means Harrison Cole has been running from something much bigger than debt.”

The room fell silent.

Outside, snow covered the city.

And somewhere in the darkness, Harrison Cole believed he had successfully escaped.

But he did not know Roman Costa had already begun uncovering every secret he buried.

And he did not know the woman he abandoned was becoming the one person who could bring him down.
