Chapter 3 - The Woman Hidden on the Plane

The door handle moved.
Slowly.
Everyone in the cabin froze.
I held Lily against my chest while Adrian stood between us and the entrance.
His hand moved inside his jacket.
Not quickly.
Not nervously.
Like he had done it a thousand times before.
That was when I realized something.
The stories about Adrian Voss weren't exaggerated.
This was the man people feared.
The man who could turn a room silent without saying a word.
But standing there in front of me, protecting a baby who wasn't even mine, he didn't look like a monster.
He looked terrified.
The door opened.
A woman stepped inside.
She was wearing a dark coat, her hair pulled back, her face pale.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Adrian lowered his weapon.
Not because he trusted her.
Because he recognized her.
"No."
His voice was barely a whisper.
The woman looked at him.
"Hello, Adrian."
I felt the air leave the room.
Because I knew that voice.
Not because I had heard it before.
Because Adrian had just reacted like he had seen a ghost.
The woman looked at Lily.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"My daughter."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"You're dead."
The woman swallowed.
"I know."
Nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
I looked between them.
Then at Lily.
Then back at the woman.
"Who is she?"
Adrian didn't answer.
The woman did.
"I'm Lily's mother."
My grip tightened around the baby.
I didn't know why.
Maybe because everything about that sentence felt impossible.
Adrian stepped closer.
"You disappeared."
"I had to."
"You left me with a child everyone wanted."
Her eyes dropped.
"I was trying to save her."
Adrian laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
"By pretending you were dead?"
The woman looked away.
"I had no other choice."
I watched them.
Two powerful people.
Two people carrying years of secrets.
And somehow, Lily was caught in the middle.
The baby suddenly reached toward the woman.
A tiny movement.
Almost invisible.
But Adrian saw it.
The woman saw it.
And I saw the pain on both their faces.
She was her mother.
No matter what happened.
No matter how many secrets existed.
That bond was real.
The woman slowly reached out.
"Can I hold her?"
I looked at Adrian.
He looked at me.
For some reason, I expected him to order me.
To demand that I hand Lily over.
But he didn't.
He simply said:
"Your choice, Claire."
I was surprised.
"My choice?"
"Yes."
"You brought me into this."
His eyes met mine.
"And you're the reason she's alive."
The words affected me more than I expected.
Because for the first time since this nightmare began, someone wasn't treating me like a problem.
Someone was treating me like I mattered.
I carefully handed Lily to her mother.
The woman's hands shook as she took the baby.
She pressed her lips against Lily's forehead.
"I'm sorry."
The words were quiet.
But they weren't for me.
They were for her daughter.
Lily stopped crying.
And that was when I realized something.
The baby knew her.
Even after everything.
A child could recognize her mother's touch.
Adrian looked away.
Like seeing them together hurt him.
I noticed.
"You loved her."
He didn't answer.
The woman did.
"He still does."
Adrian immediately looked at her.
"Don't."
She ignored him.
"He just doesn't know how to forgive himself."
The room became tense.
I suddenly felt like I was standing in the middle of a conversation that started long before I existed.
A story with missing chapters.
A story Daniel somehow became part of.
And then I remembered.
The note.
Daniel's handwriting.
The warning.
I turned to Adrian.
"You said Daniel worked for you."
His expression changed.
The woman holding Lily looked at me.
"Daniel?"
She went pale.
"You knew Daniel Bennett?"
I stared at her.
"Yes."
She looked at Adrian.
And whatever she saw on his face frightened her.
"What did you tell her?"
"Nothing."
"Adrian."
"Not yet."
I hated that phrase.
Not yet.
Everyone in this world seemed to know things except me.
My husband.
Adrian.
This woman.
Everyone had pieces of my life.
And I was the only person missing the truth.
"What happened to Daniel?"
Nobody answered.
I stepped forward.
"No more secrets."
My voice surprised even me.
"I lost my husband."
I looked at Adrian.
"I buried him."
Then at the woman.
"And now I find out he was involved with people like you."
My eyes burned.
"I deserve to know why."
Adrian stared at me.
Then slowly reached for the folder.
He pulled out another document.
"This was found in Daniel's apartment after his death."
My heart stopped.
"You searched his apartment?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because Daniel left something behind."
He handed me the paper.
I looked down.
It was a list.
Names.
Dates.
Locations.
And one name appeared over and over.
VOSS.
But underneath it was something else.
A name I had never seen before.
The Black Circle.
"What is this?"
The woman holding Lily suddenly spoke.
"It's the reason they want my daughter."
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked terrified.
"The Black Circle isn't trying to kill Lily because she's Adrian's child."
She looked at me.
"They're trying to kill her because Daniel discovered what they were planning."
I stared.
"What planning?"
The woman's face became pale.
"Something that could destroy everyone connected to them."
Adrian took the paper from my hand.
"We need to leave."
The woman nodded.
"Now."
For the first time, all three of them agreed.
That scared me.
Because people only stopped arguing when something worse was coming.
Adrian moved toward the cockpit.
The woman followed.
I stayed behind for a second.
Looking at Lily.
A baby who had somehow connected strangers, enemies, and secrets.
Then I noticed something.
The bracelet.
The old hospital bracelet.
It had changed.
The writing on the back was different.
I was sure of it.
Before, it said:
She knows everything.
Now there was another line underneath.
A line that wasn't there before.
My fingers trembled.
Because the new words weren't written in ink.
They were carved into the bracelet.
Like someone had wanted them to survive forever.
I read them slowly.
"Claire Bennett is the key."
My blood ran cold.
I looked up.
Adrian was watching me.
He wasn't surprised.
He was afraid.
"You knew."
His silence answered me.
"You knew this was about me."
Before he could respond, the entire plane shook violently.
The lights flashed.
An alarm started screaming.
The pilot's voice came through the speaker.
"We have a problem."
Adrian grabbed the communication device.
"What happened?"
A pause.
Then the pilot answered.
"The navigation system has been overridden."
Adrian's face changed.
"By who?"
Another pause.
Then the pilot whispered:
"By someone sitting in the cockpit."
Adrian looked toward the front of the plane.
May you like
But the cockpit door was already open.
And someone was standing there waiting...
