Chapter 7 - The Recording That Changed Everything

"Claire."
My father's voice filled the hidden room.
For twelve years, I had imagined what it would feel like to hear him again.
I thought I would cry.
I thought I would feel relief.
I thought maybe some part of me would finally heal.
I was wrong.
Because the first thing I felt was fear.
The room was small.
Cold.
Hidden beneath an abandoned hangar where people had been keeping secrets for years.
And standing beside me were the people connected to every unanswered question I had ever carried.
My sister.
Adrian Voss.
The man who knew my husband.
The man who knew my father.
The man who had hidden the truth from me.
The recording continued.
"Claire, if this message is playing, then you have found the place I never wanted you to see."
My hands tightened.
I held Lily closer.
My father's voice sounded older than I remembered.
Tired.
Like a man who knew he was running out of time.
"I know you have questions."
A pause.
"I know you are angry."
I almost laughed.
Because he was right.
He knew me.
Even after all these years.
"I need you to understand something first."
The recording became quieter.
"Everything I did was to keep you alive."
I looked at my sister.
She looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
Because she had known.
She had heard this before.
The recording continued.
"Your mother, your sister, and you were never supposed to be involved."
My breathing stopped.
"My mistake was believing I could leave that world behind."
The screen flickered.
A video appeared.
My father was sitting in a dark room.
Older.
Different.
But still him.
The man I remembered.
The man who used to make pancakes every Sunday morning.
The man who fixed broken toys instead of buying new ones.
The man who kissed my forehead before I went to sleep.
But there was something else in his eyes.
Regret.
"Claire, if you're watching this, then Thomas Bennett is already gone."
My eyes burned.
Even hearing his own name hurt.
"Your father made mistakes."
He looked directly into the camera.
"But the biggest mistake I made was trusting the wrong people."
The video changed.
Documents appeared.
Names.
Photos.
Files.
Then one name appeared.
Adrian Voss.
The room went silent.
I slowly turned toward Adrian.
He didn't look away.
That scared me.
Because if he was innocent, he would have reacted.
He would have defended himself.
But he didn't.
My father's voice continued.
"Adrian Voss was not responsible for the creation of the Black Circle."
Adrian looked surprised.
Then my father continued.
"But he was responsible for keeping it alive."
The silence became unbearable.
I looked at Adrian.
"Is that true?"
He didn't answer.
My sister whispered:
"Claire..."
"No."
I looked at her.
"I want him to answer."
Adrian took a breath.
"Yes."
One word.
No excuse.
No explanation.
Just yes.
My heart sank.
"Daniel worked for you."
"Yes."
"You knew my father."
"Yes."
"You knew my sister was alive."
A pause.
"Yes."
Every answer felt like another piece of my life breaking apart.
I looked at him.
"Was anything real?"
His expression changed.
"What?"
"My husband."
My voice shook.
"Was Daniel real?"
Adrian looked at me.
And for the first time, he looked hurt.
"More than anyone."
I hated that part of me believed him.
Because Daniel was real.
The love was real.
The memories were real.
But the secrets were real too.
My father's recording continued.
"If Adrian is there, listen carefully."
Adrian looked back at the screen.
My father's voice became serious.
"Adrian, you know what happened."
The room froze.
"You know who betrayed us."
Adrian stepped closer to the screen.
"No."
My sister looked at him.
"What?"
Adrian's face changed.
"This isn't possible."
My father's voice continued.
"The person who destroyed the Black Circle was not an enemy."
A pause.
"It was someone inside."
The screen showed another file.
A photograph.
A person.
I couldn't see the face clearly.
The image was damaged.
But there was a name underneath.
A name that made Adrian step back.
"No."
I looked at him.
"Who is it?"
He didn't answer.
My sister moved closer to the screen.
Her face turned pale.
"That can't be."
Marcus looked at the image.
Then whispered:
"We're too late."
I stared at all of them.
"Who?"
Adrian finally spoke.
His voice was different.
Not powerful.
Not controlled.
Afraid.
"Victor Hale."
I didn't know the name.
But everyone else did.
Elena covered her mouth.
Marcus looked toward the door.
Because suddenly, the danger wasn't outside.
It was inside the room.
"Who is Victor Hale?"
I asked.
Nobody answered.
So I looked at Adrian.
"You owe me the truth."
He nodded slowly.
"Victor was my closest friend."
The words surprised me.
"Friend?"
"Before everything."
He looked at the screen.
"Before the Black Circle became what it is now."
My father continued speaking.
"Victor will tell you that he did what was necessary."
The recording showed more files.
Money transfers.
Secret meetings.
Photos.
"Do not believe him."
My father's voice became urgent.
"He doesn't want power."
The screen went black.
Then one final message appeared.
"He wants revenge."
The room stayed silent.
Then a sound came from outside.
A door closing.
Everyone turned.
Marcus immediately reached for his weapon.
"Someone followed us."
Adrian moved toward the entrance.
"No."
He stopped.
Because the security monitor on the wall suddenly turned on.
A camera feed appeared.
The hangar.
The outside entrance.
And a person standing there.
Watching.
My sister stepped closer.
Her face lost all color.
"No."
I looked at her.
"Who is that?"
She didn't answer.
Because the person on the screen lifted their head.
And looked directly into the camera.
Like they knew we were watching.
Then the screen changed.
A message appeared.
Not written.
Spoken.
A man's voice came through the speakers.
"Hello, Claire."
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
Not from memory.
Not from the past.
From somewhere much closer.
The voice continued.
"I've been waiting a long time for you to find out what your father really did."
Adrian grabbed the monitor.
"Victor."
The man outside smiled.
Then he said one sentence.
"Ask Adrian why Daniel was alive for three days after the accident."
Nobody moved.
My heart stopped.
Because Daniel's death certificate said he died immediately.
But Victor knew something impossible.
May you like
Something nobody should have known.
And then the hangar lights suddenly went out...
