Chapter 11 - The Father Who Chose To Disappear

The door opened.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The person standing outside looked exactly like the man in my memories.

The same eyes.

The same tired smile.

The same scar above his eyebrow from the motorcycle accident he told me was "the stupidest decision of his life."

My father.

Thomas Bennett.

The man I buried twelve years ago.

The man I thought I lost forever.

He stepped inside slowly.

No guards.

No weapons.

No fear.

Just a man walking into a room full of people who wanted answers.

My hands started shaking.

I couldn't hear anything except my own heartbeat.

"Claire."

Hearing my name from his mouth broke something inside me.

Because I had spent years wishing for that moment.

And now that it happened...

I didn't know if I wanted to run toward him or away.

"You can't be real."

My voice barely came out.

My father looked at me.

His eyes filled with tears.

"I know."

Two simple words.

But they carried twelve years of pain.

Sarah moved closer to him.

"Father."

That word made everything worse.

Because she had known.

She had known he was alive too.

I turned toward her.

"You knew."

Sarah's face fell.

"Claire..."

"No."

I stepped back.

"You all knew."

My eyes moved between them.

"My father."

"My sister."

"My husband."

"Adrian."

Everyone had been protecting a truth that destroyed me.

My father looked at Adrian.

"She hates you right now."

Adrian didn't react.

"She has every reason."

That surprised me.

Because Adrian never admitted fault.

Not once.

My father looked back at me.

"I am sorry."

I laughed quietly.

It wasn't happiness.

It wasn't relief.

It was pain.

"Sorry?"

My voice cracked.

"You let me think you were dead."

He lowered his eyes.

"I know."

"You let me mourn you."

"I know."

"You let me believe Sarah was dead."

"I know."

The tears came.

I hated that they came.

I hated that after everything, I was still his daughter.

Still the little girl who wanted her father to fix everything.

"Why?"

The question came out broken.

"Why would you do that?"

My father looked at the ground.

"Because I failed."

The room became silent.

"I thought I could destroy the Black Circle from inside."

He looked at Adrian.

"I thought I could trust the people closest to me."

His eyes moved to Sarah.

"I was wrong."

Then he looked at me.

"But I was never afraid of dying."

A pause.

"I was afraid of what would happen to you if I stayed alive."

I shook my head.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It will."

He stepped closer.

But stopped before reaching me.

Like he knew he didn't deserve to touch me.

"The night of the accident was planned."

My breath stopped.

"By who?"

He looked toward the dark room behind us.

"The person who wanted the Black Circle."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Victor Hale."

My father shook his head.

"No."

Everyone froze.

"No?"

My father looked at him.

"Victor was never the leader."

Adrian's face changed.

"Then who?"

My father looked at me.

And I knew before he said it.

I didn't want to hear it.

But I knew.

"The person who controlled everything was someone who had access to all of us."

Sarah whispered:

"No..."

My father nodded.

"Yes."

My heart raced.

"Who?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he walked toward the old computer.

He inserted a small device.

The screen turned on.

A folder appeared.

The name made Adrian go pale.

ORIGINAL CIRCLE ARCHIVE.

My father opened it.

Thousands of files appeared.

Names.

Records.

Photographs.

Evidence.

Then one file appeared at the top.

BENNETT FAMILY INCIDENT.

I stared.

"What is that?"

My father looked at me.

"The reason Daniel died."

The room became cold.

He opened the file.

Inside was a report.

A photograph.

A date.

The night Daniel's car crashed.

Then another image appeared.

A person standing near the vehicle.

My eyes moved closer.

I couldn't breathe.

Because I recognized the person.

Not from the past.

From my life.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who had comforted me after Daniel's death.

Someone who had stood beside me while I cried.

"No."

I whispered.

My father looked at me.

"Claire."

I shook my head.

"No."

Because accepting it meant everything changed.

"That can't be true."

My father said nothing.

The evidence was enough.

Adrian looked at the screen.

His expression changed from anger to shock.

"How?"

My father looked at him.

"Because you never investigated the person you trusted most."

Adrian's face became pale.

"I did."

"No."

My father shook his head.

"You investigated everyone around you."

A pause.

"But you never investigated yourself."

The words hit harder than expected.

Adrian stepped back.

"What does that mean?"

My father didn't answer.

Instead, he opened another file.

Daniel's final report.

The one he had never finished.

The last line was highlighted.

A sentence written in Daniel's handwriting.

I FOUND THE PERSON WHO HAS BEEN HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT.

My hands trembled.

"Who?"

My father looked at me.

"The person who arranged Daniel's death."

The room went silent.

Then the computer screen changed.

A new message appeared.

Not from the archive.

Not from my father.

From Daniel.

A message that had been waiting for twelve years.

The screen displayed:

CLAIRE, IF YOU ARE SEEING THIS, THEN MY KILLER IS STANDING NEXT TO YOU.

Everyone froze.

Slowly...

Every person in the room looked at each other.

Then the hidden speaker turned on.

Daniel's voice whispered one final warning.

May you like

"Don't trust..."

The lights suddenly went out again.
