Chapter 6 - The Truth Buried Under Her Name

The name written on the back of the photograph was not Arya Bennett.
It was Adrian Voss.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
The entire room seemed to freeze around that single discovery.
Arya stared at the photograph in Adrian's hand.
Then at him.
Then back at the photograph.
"Why is your name on a picture of my parents?"
Her voice was quiet.
But everyone heard the fear behind it.
Adrian looked at the old handwriting again.
The letters were faded.
But unmistakable.
For Adrian. The child you never knew.
His fingers tightened around the photograph.
"No."
It was barely a whisper.
A denial.
A refusal.
Not because he didn't believe it.
Because he did.
Anna looked away.
And that was when Arya understood.
Her mother knew.
"You knew."
Anna closed her eyes.
"Arya..."
"You knew."
The pain in Arya's voice was sharper than anger.
It was betrayal.
"My whole life, everyone told me pieces of the truth."
She looked around the room.
"Everyone except me."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Arya, listen to me."
"No."
She shook her head.
"I need someone to explain why my dead father had a picture connecting me to the most dangerous family in the city."
Nobody answered.
Because the truth was finally too heavy to hide.
Anna sat down slowly.
For the first time, she looked tired.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like carrying the secret for years had finally broken her.
"Your father knew Adrian before either of you understood what was happening."
Arya looked at her.
"How?"
Anna looked at Adrian.
"Because Adrian's mother was my closest friend."
Adrian froze.
"My mother?"
Anna nodded.
"Before Victor Voss became the man everyone feared, there was another side to that family."
She looked down.
"Your mother and Adrian's mother were friends. They trusted each other."
Arya frowned.
"But why would my father hide this?"
"Because Victor found out."
The name changed the atmosphere instantly.
Even Julian, standing nearby, became quiet.
Anna continued.
"Victor didn't just want power."
She looked at the photograph.
"He wanted control over everything."
Adrian stared at the picture.
"My father knew about me."
Anna nodded.
"He did."
A painful silence followed.
Adrian looked away.
Arya noticed something.
He wasn't angry.
He looked hurt.
Like he was discovering another piece of a life he never got to have.
"You were his son."
Anna spoke softly.
"He loved you."
Adrian laughed once.
A broken sound.
"That doesn't make sense."
"Why?"
"Because he never told me."
Anna looked at him.
"Because he was trying to protect you."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
His voice lowered.
"But nobody asks what it cost."
Nobody replied.
Because they knew.
It cost him his childhood.
His family.
His ability to trust anyone.
Arya watched him carefully.
The powerful man everyone feared suddenly looked like someone who had spent years believing he was the reason everything went wrong.
Then Marcus interrupted.
"Beautiful story."
Everyone turned.
He was still standing near the entrance.
Still calm.
Still watching.
"But you're all forgetting something."
Adrian's eyes moved toward him.
"You're not leaving."
Marcus smiled.
"Actually, I already won."
He raised his phone.
A video was playing on the screen.
Arya couldn't see it clearly.
But Adrian did.
His face changed.
"What did you do?"
Marcus looked satisfied.
"I released a copy of the file."
Anna stood up.
"No."
Marcus looked at her.
"Yes."
"What file?"
Arya asked.
Marcus turned toward her.
"The one your father died protecting."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Where did you send it?"
Marcus smiled.
"Everywhere."
The room went silent.
"The police."
"The media."
"Your enemies."
His smile grew.
"Everyone who has been waiting for the Voss family to fall."
Adrian's men immediately checked their phones.
One by one, their expressions changed.
Messages.
News alerts.
Calls.
Everything was happening at once.
Adrian looked at Julian.
"You knew."
Julian didn't deny it.
"I knew he would eventually expose it."
"You helped him."
Julian looked away.
"I wanted the truth out."
"You endangered Arya."
For the first time, Julian looked guilty.
"That wasn't supposed to happen."
Arya stared.
"You knew this could happen?"
Nobody answered.
Her chest tightened.
Again.
She was the last person to know.
Again.
Adrian saw her expression.
"Arya."
She stepped back.
"Don't."
He stopped.
"I don't know who to believe anymore."
The words affected him.
More than she expected.
Because Adrian Voss could face enemies.
He could face guns.
He could face betrayal.
But he didn't know how to face someone who was disappointed in him.
Suddenly, the lights flickered.
The security system came back online.
A guard rushed in.
"Boss."
Adrian turned.
"What?"
The guard looked at Arya.
"We found something in the archive room."
"Another message?"
"No."
The guard swallowed.
"A recording."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"From who?"
The guard hesitated.
"From your father."
Nobody moved.
A recording.
From Victor Voss.
A man who had been dead for fifteen years.
Adrian walked toward the archive room.
Arya followed.
Nobody stopped her.
Inside the room, a small projector sat on the table.
An old device.
One that looked like it had been hidden there for years.
Adrian pressed play.
The screen flickered.
A man appeared.
Victor Voss.
Older.
Tired.
Not the monster everyone described.
A father.
Adrian stared.
His face became unreadable.
Victor looked directly into the camera.
"If you are watching this, then I failed."
A silence filled the room.
Arya watched Adrian carefully.
Victor continued.
"I need my son to understand something."
Adrian stepped closer.
"You were never my weakness."
His expression changed slightly.
"You were the only thing I ever wanted to protect."
Adrian's breathing changed.
Victor continued.
"But if this recording has been found, it means the person who betrayed me is still alive."
Everyone became still.
The screen flickered.
Victor looked away for a moment.
Then said:
"The person responsible for everything is not outside the family."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
Victor continued.
"The betrayal came from someone who shared my blood."
The room went silent.
Julian stepped forward.
"No."
Victor's final words echoed.
"Adrian, trust nobody."
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Then Adrian slowly turned around.
His eyes moved across the room.
Across Anna.
Across Julian.
Across his own men.
Until they stopped.
On one person.
Someone who had been standing quietly behind everyone the entire time.
Someone Arya had not noticed before.
Adrian's voice became cold.
"How long have you been here?"
The person stepped out of the shadows.
May you like
And Arya realized she had seen that face before.
Because the person holding the gun was the same person who had rescued Adrian's family fifteen years ago.
