Chapter 4 - The Brother Hidden in the Shadows

The man standing at the end of the hallway did not look like a ghost.

He looked like someone who had spent years preparing for this exact moment.

The emergency lights painted half of his face in red.

The other half remained hidden in darkness.

Arya could hear the sound of her own heartbeat.

She looked at Adrian.

For the first time since she met him, he looked completely unprepared.

Not scared.

Not weak.

But shocked.

The man smiled slightly.

"Hello, little brother."

Adrian didn't move.

Nobody in the room moved.

Even his security team seemed frozen.

Because they had never seen this side of him.

They had never seen Adrian Voss speechless.

Arya looked between them.

"Brother?"

The stranger stepped forward.

His name was Julian Voss.

The first son of Victor Voss.

Adrian's older brother.

The man everyone believed had died fifteen years ago.

The man whose name had disappeared from every record connected to the Voss family.

But he was alive.

And he was standing inside Adrian's home.

"I see you still have a habit of collecting lost people, Adrian."

Julian's eyes moved toward Arya.

"First our father."

"Then Anna Bennett."

"And now her daughter."

Arya felt a chill.

Adrian stepped in front of her.

"Stay away from her."

Julian laughed quietly.

That laugh carried no humor.

Only bitterness.

"Still protecting strangers."

His eyes narrowed.

"Just like he did."

Adrian's expression changed.

"Don't talk about him."

Julian tilted his head.

"Why?"

"Because you never knew the truth."

The words hit the room.

Adrian's hands tightened.

"You weren't there."

"No."

Julian looked at him.

"I was the one who survived."

Nobody spoke.

Arya felt trapped inside a conversation that started long before she existed.

A family war.

A buried history.

A secret that had destroyed lives.

Anna moved closer to Arya.

"Adrian, we need to leave."

Julian looked at Anna.

And smiled.

"Still protecting her."

Anna's face hardened.

"You should have stayed dead."

The sentence shocked Arya.

Because it meant one thing.

Anna knew him.

She knew Julian.

Julian walked closer.

"That's what everyone wanted."

His eyes moved toward the flash drive in Adrian's hand.

"But unfortunately, secrets have a way of surviving."

Adrian raised his weapon.

Several guards immediately aimed theirs.

Julian didn't react.

"You won't shoot me."

Adrian's eyes were cold.

"Try me."

Julian smiled.

"Because if I die tonight, the people waiting outside will release everything."

Silence.

Arya looked at Adrian.

He understood immediately.

There were more people involved.

This wasn't an attack.

It was a plan.

"You came here for the drive."

Julian nodded.

"Partly."

"What else?"

Julian looked directly at Arya.

The way he looked at her made her uncomfortable.

Like he wasn't seeing her.

Like he was seeing something connected to her.

"Her."

Adrian moved instantly.

"No."

Julian's smile disappeared.

"She has no idea what she carries."

Arya frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

Again.

Another secret.

Another thing everyone knew except her.

She stepped forward.

"I'm done."

Everyone looked at her.

"I'm done standing here while people talk around me like I'm a child."

Her voice shook.

But she didn't stop.

"My mother disappeared."

"My father died."

"People attacked me."

"And now a man who was supposed to be dead is standing in front of me saying I carry something important."

She looked at Adrian.

"I deserve the truth."

Adrian remained silent.

Arya looked at Julian.

"You too."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Julian smiled.

"Your father would have liked you."

Arya froze.

"Don't."

Her voice became quiet.

"Don't talk about him like you knew him."

Julian's expression changed.

"He trusted the wrong people."

Adrian interrupted.

"You killed him."

The words landed like a gunshot.

Arya looked at Adrian.

Julian's smile faded.

"You still believe that?"

"I saw what happened."

"No."

Julian stepped closer.

"You saw what they wanted you to see."

Adrian's face hardened.

"Explain."

Julian looked around the room.

"Your father discovered Victor was selling information to people who wanted control over the city."

Anna lowered her eyes.

Arya listened carefully.

"He wanted to expose him."

Julian continued.

"But before he could, someone betrayed him."

Adrian stared.

"Who?"

Julian looked at him.

"You."

The room went silent.

Arya looked at Adrian.

Impossible.

But Julian continued.

"You were the reason he trusted the wrong person."

Adrian's voice became dangerous.

"Be careful."

"Your father gave you the information because he believed you were the only person who could fix what he started."

Julian laughed bitterly.

"But you were young."

Adrian didn't speak.

"You gave that information to the wrong person."

Arya looked at Adrian.

"Is that true?"

His silence hurt.

Because silence was sometimes an answer.

Adrian looked away.

"I was nineteen."

Nobody expected that.

Even Julian paused.

Adrian continued.

"My father gave me a file."

Arya watched him.

"I didn't understand what it meant."

"What happened?"

Adrian's voice became quieter.

"I trusted someone."

Julian finished the sentence.

"And your father died because of it."

The room felt colder.

Arya looked at Adrian differently.

Not with fear.

With confusion.

Because the man who saved her had been carrying guilt for years.

Before anyone could say more, the sound of breaking glass came from upstairs.

Everyone turned.

A guard spoke into his radio.

"Movement on the second floor."

Adrian immediately looked toward Anna.

"How many people know this location?"

"No one."

"That's not possible."

Julian smiled.

"It is when you have someone on the inside."

Every guard turned suspiciously toward each other.

Arya felt the tension rise.

Nobody trusted anyone.

Not even themselves.

Adrian grabbed Arya's arm.

"Safe room. Now."

She pulled away.

"No."

He looked at her.

"I said I want the truth."

"And you will get it."

"Not if you keep hiding me."

Adrian stared at her.

For a second, he looked like he wanted to argue.

But then the alarm changed.

The sound became different.

Not a security alarm.

A warning.

Someone had entered the main gate.

Someone had bypassed everything.

Julian looked toward the entrance.

"They're here."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

Julian didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Anna.

And Anna looked terrified.

Arya noticed.

Her mother was not afraid of Adrian.

She was not afraid of Julian.

But whoever was coming...

She feared them.

A loud crash echoed through the estate.

The front doors opened.

Footsteps filled the hallway.

Slow.

Confident.

Familiar.

Anna grabbed Arya's hand.

"Don't let them see you."

Arya stared.

"Who?"

Anna's lips trembled.

Then a voice came from the entrance.

A voice Arya had never heard before.

But Adrian recognized immediately.

Because his expression changed.

The same way it had when Julian appeared.

The voice spoke one sentence.

"Adrian Voss."

A pause.

Then:

May you like

"Bring me the girl you stole from me."

And behind the soldiers entering the hallway stood the man who knew Arya's real identity.
