Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind the Necklace

Arya Bennett woke up to the sound of rain hitting glass.

For a few seconds, she forgot where she was.

She forgot the alley.

She forgot the pain.

She forgot the man in the black suit who had appeared like a shadow and changed the direction of her life in a single sentence.

Then she tried to move.

Pain immediately reminded her.

A sharp ache moved through her ribs.

Her breath caught.

Her eyes opened.

She was lying on a large bed in a room she had never seen before.

Everything around her looked impossible.

The walls were dark wood.

The furniture was expensive but simple.

A fireplace burned quietly across the room.

There were no bright colors.

No decorations meant to impress.

Just a cold elegance that made her feel like she had stepped into someone else's world.

A world where people like her didn't belong.

Arya slowly sat up.

The memory came back piece by piece.

The alley.

The attack.

The man.

Adrian Voss.

Her fingers immediately searched for the necklace.

It wasn't there.

Her heart dropped.

She pushed the blanket away and tried to stand.

The room spun.

She grabbed the edge of the bed before falling.

"You're going to hurt yourself."

Arya froze.

A woman stood near the doorway.

She was in her forties, wearing a simple black dress, holding a tray with water and medicine.

Arya stepped back.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Clara."

"Where am I?"

"At the Voss estate."

The answer made Arya's stomach tighten.

The Voss estate.

Even she had heard that name.

Not because she followed powerful people.

Because everyone had heard rumors.

People disappeared after crossing Adrian Voss.

Companies collapsed overnight.

Men who threatened him suddenly left the city.

Nobody knew where the line was.

They only knew not to cross it.

"I need to leave."

Clara looked at her carefully.

"You can't."

Arya's expression hardened.

"I wasn't asking."

Before Clara could answer, the door opened.

Adrian walked inside.

He had changed clothes.

The black suit was gone.

Now he wore a dark shirt with the sleeves rolled up.

But somehow, he looked even more intimidating.

Because without the expensive suit, Arya could see the person beneath the reputation.

A man who looked exhausted.

A man carrying too many secrets.

His eyes moved to her.

"You should be resting."

Arya stared at him.

"You kidnapped me."

"No."

"You brought me somewhere I didn't agree to go."

"I saved your life."

"That doesn't give you ownership over me."

Something flickered in Adrian's eyes.

Not anger.

Surprise.

Most people avoided challenging him.

Arya looked like she had nothing left to lose.

And somehow, that made her more dangerous than anyone who feared him.

Adrian walked toward the table and placed something down.

Her necklace.

Arya immediately reached for it.

He stopped her.

"Before you take it, you need to understand something."

"What?"

"That necklace is the reason they attacked you."

The room became silent.

Arya slowly lowered her hand.

"What are you talking about?"

Adrian looked at the pendant.

"Where did your mother tell you she got this?"

Arya frowned.

"She didn't."

"She never explained it?"

"No."

"Not once?"

Arya shook her head.

"My mother didn't talk about her past."

Adrian studied her face.

"Did she ever mention the name Evelyn?"

The color disappeared from Arya's expression.

She didn't answer immediately.

That was enough.

Adrian noticed.

"You know that name."

Arya looked away.

"When I was little, my mother used to say it when she thought I wasn't listening."

"How?"

"She would wake up from nightmares."

Adrian stepped closer.

"What did she say?"

Arya swallowed.

"She always said the same thing."

The room felt heavier.

"She said, 'I should have taken you and disappeared sooner.'"

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"Anything else?"

Arya looked at him.

"She said if anyone from the Voss family ever found us, I should run."

For the first time since she met him, Adrian looked genuinely shaken.

Arya noticed.

And it frightened her.

Because whatever this was...

It was bigger than the attack.

"What is happening?"

Adrian didn't answer.

He walked to the window.

Outside, the estate grounds stretched into the darkness.

Finally, he spoke.

"Your mother worked for my family."

Arya stared.

"What?"

"She wasn't just an employee."

"Then what was she?"

Adrian remained silent.

That silence was worse than any answer.

"Adrian."

It was the first time she said his name.

He turned.

"Your mother knew things she wasn't supposed to know."

"About what?"

"About my father."

Arya felt a cold feeling move through her.

"Your father?"

"He was the reason my family became powerful."

Adrian looked down.

"He was also the reason many people suffered."

Arya shook her head.

"No."

"You don't know him."

"I know my mother."

Her voice became stronger.

"She wasn't involved in anything bad."

Adrian looked at her.

"I never said she was."

"Then why are you talking like she was some kind of secret?"

Because she was.

He didn't say it.

But Arya saw it.

There was something he wasn't telling her.

Something he was protecting.

Before she could push further, the door opened.

A man entered quickly.

He was one of Adrian's security team.

"Boss."

Adrian immediately noticed his expression.

"What happened?"

"We found the men from the alley."

Arya looked between them.

"And?"

The man hesitated.

Adrian's voice became colder.

"Speak."

"They're dead."

Silence.

Arya felt her skin go cold.

"What?"

The security man continued.

"All three of them."

"Who killed them?" Adrian asked.

"We don't know."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"That's impossible."

The man handed him a phone.

"There is one more thing."

Adrian looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

Arya watched carefully.

"What is it?"

Adrian didn't answer.

"Adrian."

He slowly turned the phone toward her.

There was a photo.

A photograph taken from a distance.

It showed Arya entering the Voss estate.

But beneath the picture was a message.

A warning.

You protected her once. You won't get the chance twice.

Arya felt her chest tighten.

"Who sent that?"

Adrian stared at the message.

Someone who knew his movements.

Someone close enough to watch.

Someone confident enough to threaten him.

He handed the phone back.

"Lock down the estate."

The security man nodded.

"And the girl?"

Adrian looked at Arya.

"The girl stays with me."

Arya immediately reacted.

"No."

Adrian looked at her.

"You still don't understand."

"Then explain."

His expression softened slightly.

"Someone attacked you because of something your mother left behind."

"And?"

"And now they know I found you."

Arya stared at him.

The truth finally started becoming clear.

She wasn't caught in a random attack.

She wasn't just unlucky.

Someone had been searching for her.

For years.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

"I want answers."

"You'll get them."

"When?"

Adrian looked toward the door.

"Tomorrow."

Arya followed his gaze.

"Why not tonight?"

Because tonight was when people came hunting.

He didn't say it.

But something in his expression told her.

This was far from over.

Hours later, the estate became silent.

Arya couldn't sleep.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the alley.

The faces.

The hands.

The moment she realized nobody was coming.

She quietly opened the bedroom door.

The hallway was empty.

She walked carefully.

She didn't know where she was going.

She just needed air.

Then she heard voices.

Adrian.

And another man.

She stopped behind the corner.

"You should have told me she was alive."

Arya froze.

The other voice sounded older.

Angry.

Adrian replied calmly.

"I didn't know."

"Don't lie to me."

"I found out tonight."

A pause.

Then the older man spoke again.

"Adrian, if Arya Bennett is alive, then her mother didn't destroy the evidence."

Arya covered her mouth.

Evidence?

"What evidence?" Adrian asked.

The answer came quietly.

"Your father's murder file."

Arya stopped breathing.

Then the man said one more thing.

"The file that proves your father didn't die the way everyone believed."

Arya slowly stepped back.

Her heel touched the floor.

A small sound.

The voices stopped.

Adrian turned toward the hallway.

"Arya?"

May you like

The door behind her opened.

And standing there was the one person she never expected to see again.
