Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Knew the Truth

Arya Bennett froze in the hallway.
The person standing in front of her looked impossible.
For a moment, her mind refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.
The woman was older.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face carried years of exhaustion.
But Arya knew that face.
She had spent her entire childhood memorizing it.
"Mom?"
The word escaped before she could stop it.
The woman standing in front of her covered her mouth.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Arya..."
Everything around them disappeared.
The hallway.
The voices.
The guards watching from a distance.
All Arya could see was the woman she had buried in her heart years ago.
Her mother.
Anna Bennett.
Alive.
Arya took one step forward.
Then another.
But she stopped.
Because something felt wrong.
Her mother was supposed to be dead.
At least, that was what Arya had been told.
Six years ago, Anna Bennett had disappeared.
The police found her abandoned car near an old highway.
No body.
No explanation.
Just a missing person report that slowly became a cold case.
Arya had spent years believing she would never see her again.
She had cried.
She had searched.
She had waited.
Until waiting became too painful.
And now Anna was standing in front of her.
Alive.
But hiding.
"You knew I was here," Arya whispered.
Anna looked away.
That answer hurt more than anything.
"You knew."
"I didn't have a choice."
Arya laughed quietly.
A broken sound.
"Everyone says that."
Her mother stepped closer.
"I tried to protect you."
"By letting me believe you were dead?"
Anna's eyes filled with pain.
"Yes."
The honesty shocked Arya.
She expected excuses.
She expected lies.
Not that.
Behind them, Adrian stood silently.
Watching.
Calculating.
Arya turned toward him.
"You knew."
Adrian didn't deny it.
"I suspected."
"You knew my mother was alive?"
"No."
His voice remained controlled.
"I knew someone connected to your past was hiding something."
Arya looked back at Anna.
"Then why is she here?"
Nobody answered.
That silence told Arya everything.
There were still secrets.
More secrets.
She felt anger rising.
"I am tired of people deciding what I can handle."
Her voice shook.
"But everyone keeps hiding things from me."
Anna looked at her daughter.
"I was trying to keep you alive."
Arya stared.
"Alive?"
The word echoed.
Anna took a deep breath.
"Your father wasn't killed in an accident."
Arya froze.
She had heard that before.
But hearing it from her mother made it real.
"What happened?"
Anna looked at Adrian.
Then away.
"Your father discovered something about the Voss family."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Anna."
She looked at him.
"No more lies."
The room became quiet.
Arya noticed something.
Her mother wasn't afraid of Adrian.
Not completely.
That surprised her.
Most people seemed to fear him.
But Anna looked at him like someone who knew the person behind the reputation.
Like someone who knew his weaknesses.
"You knew my father?" Arya asked.
Adrian looked at her.
"Yes."
"How?"
The question hung between them.
Finally, he answered.
"Your father worked with mine."
Arya waited.
"But he wasn't like them."
Adrian's voice became quieter.
"He tried to expose what my father was doing."
Arya looked between them.
"And that got him killed?"
Nobody answered immediately.
That was enough.
Her hands tightened.
"My whole life was built on a lie."
Anna stepped closer.
"No."
Arya looked at her.
"It was built on my attempt to save you."
"Mom, I was alone."
The words broke something in Anna's expression.
"I know."
That was the worst part.
She knew.
She knew Arya had spent years without her.
She knew every birthday.
Every holiday.
Every difficult moment.
And she still stayed away.
"Why come back now?"
Anna looked at Adrian.
"Because they found you."
A cold feeling moved through Arya.
"Who?"
Anna hesitated.
"The same people who killed your father."
The room went silent.
Adrian's men immediately became more alert.
Adrian stepped forward.
"How did they find her?"
Anna looked at him.
"They never stopped looking."
"For what?"
"For the evidence."
Arya remembered the conversation.
The file.
The proof.
"What evidence?"
Anna looked at her daughter.
"The reason your father died."
She reached into her coat.
Slowly.
Carefully.
She pulled out a small black flash drive.
Arya stared.
"What is that?"
"Everything."
Adrian's eyes moved to the drive.
"Where did you get it?"
Anna looked at him.
"Your father gave it to me before he died."
Adrian became completely still.
"My father?"
"He knew someone inside his organization was planning to kill him."
Arya watched Adrian's face.
For the first time, she saw something she never expected.
Pain.
Not anger.
Not control.
Pain.
"Why didn't you come to me?"
Anna looked down.
"Because I didn't know who I could trust."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"You thought I was involved."
"I thought everyone was."
The words hit harder than any accusation.
Because Adrian knew his father's world.
He knew how many people had been hurt.
How many people had been afraid.
Arya looked at the flash drive.
"What's on it?"
Anna looked at her.
"Proof."
"Of what?"
"That your father was murdered."
Arya felt dizzy.
"And the people who did it?"
Anna didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
Everyone in the room understood.
The danger wasn't over.
It had just changed.
Adrian took the flash drive.
"We need to leave."
Arya frowned.
"What?"
"Now."
"Why?"
Before Adrian could answer, every light in the estate went dark.
The room disappeared into blackness.
A second later, alarms started screaming.
Men moved instantly.
Weapons appeared.
Doors locked.
Arya stood frozen.
Anna grabbed her hand.
"Stay close to me."
Adrian pulled out his phone.
No signal.
Impossible.
His security system was built with multiple backups.
Someone had disabled everything.
Someone inside.
A gunshot echoed through the house.
Arya flinched.
Another followed.
Closer.
Adrian moved in front of them.
His expression changed completely.
The calm man was gone.
The feared man had returned.
"Get them to the safe room."
One of his guards nodded.
But before they could move, a voice came through the estate speakers.
A voice Adrian recognized.
A voice he had not heard in years.
"Adrian."
Everyone stopped.
The voice continued.
"You spent your whole life trying to find the truth."
A pause.
Then:
"Tonight, I brought the truth to you."
Arya looked at Adrian.
His face had gone pale.
"Who is that?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Because he already knew.
The man continued speaking.
"And I brought someone else too."
A door opened somewhere in the darkness.
Slowly.
Someone stepped into the hallway.
Someone Adrian thought was dead.
Someone who knew exactly where Arya was hiding.
May you like
Then the voice whispered:
"Say hello to your brother."
