Chapter 1 - The Command That Changed Everything

A young woman collapsed against a brick wall in a dark alley, whispering:
"Please... don't leave me here."
When mafia boss Adrian Voss arrived, he found a torn silver necklace lying beside the injured woman.
But three tiny letters were scratched into the back:
"A.B."
Adrian suddenly realized this wasn't a random attack.
Arya Bennett had learned one painful truth about life.
Nobody came when you screamed.
The first hit had shocked her more than it hurt.
The second one made her realize they were not trying to scare her.
They were trying to break her.
She remembered the sound of her body hitting the wet pavement. She remembered the cold laughter above her. She remembered the expensive shoes standing inches away from her face as one of the men whispered that nobody would miss her.
But the thing she remembered most was the silence afterward.
The kind of silence that came when the world decided you were already gone.
Arya opened her eyes slowly.
The alley lights above her blurred into long golden lines through the rain.
Her breathing was shallow.
Every movement sent pain through her ribs.
Her hands trembled as she tried to push herself away from the wall, but her strength disappeared almost immediately.
She looked down at herself.
Her black tank top was torn at the shoulder. Her jeans were ripped at the knee. Her white jacket, the only expensive thing she owned, was stained with dirt and rain.
Six hours earlier, she had been walking home from work.
Six hours earlier, she had believed her biggest problem was losing another shift at the restaurant.
Now she was lying in an alley wondering if anyone would ever know what happened to her.
Arya closed her eyes.
She thought about calling her sister.
She thought about calling the police.
She thought about calling anyone.
But her phone was gone.
Her purse was gone.
Even her voice felt like it had been taken from her.
Then she heard something.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Controlled.
Not rushed.
Not nervous.
Someone was walking toward her.
Arya forced her eyes open again.
Through the rain, she saw several men standing at the entrance of the alley.
They were dressed in black.
Not like the men who had attacked her.
These men looked organized.
Dangerous.
Behind them, a black luxury car sat with its headlights cutting through the darkness.
The driver opened the back door.
A man stepped out.
He did not hurry.
He did not look surprised.
He simply looked around the alley as if he owned every shadow inside it.
Adrian Voss.
Arya didn't know his name yet.
She didn't know that entire cities whispered about him.
She didn't know that businessmen feared his phone calls more than they feared court orders.
She didn't know that powerful men lowered their voices when his name was mentioned.
All she knew was that everyone around him moved differently.
Like they were afraid of disappointing him.
Adrian looked toward the far end of the alley.
Two men who had been hiding near the exit immediately lowered their heads.
His expression remained calm.
Too calm.
"Find out who did this."
His voice was quiet.
But everyone heard him.
One of the men stepped forward.
"We're already checking."
Adrian ignored him.
His attention moved back to Arya.
The woman sitting against the wall.
The woman who looked like she had spent the last hour fighting just to stay conscious.
Something changed in his expression.
Not much.
Most people would never notice.
But his closest men did.
Adrian Voss was angry.
Not the kind of anger that created noise.
The kind that came before consequences.
He walked closer.
Arya immediately tried to move away.
Her back pressed harder against the brick.
"Don't."
The word came out barely above a whisper.
Adrian stopped.
For the first time that night, someone had looked at him without fear of his reputation.
She was afraid of him.
But she was more afraid of what had already happened.
"You don't have to be afraid of me," he said.
Arya gave a weak laugh.
A painful one.
"Everyone says that right before something worse happens."
The men behind Adrian exchanged glances.
Nobody spoke to him that way.
Nobody.
But Adrian did not react.
Instead, he looked down and noticed something near her hand.
A necklace.
Broken.
The chain was snapped.
A small silver pendant rested in a puddle beside her fingers.
He bent down and picked it up.
Arya's eyes immediately widened.
"Give that back."
Her voice suddenly carried more strength.
Adrian looked at her.
"Why is this important?"
She reached for it, but pain stopped her halfway.
"My mother gave it to me."
Adrian turned the pendant over.
There were scratches on the back.
Small marks.
Almost impossible to see.
Three letters.
A.B.
His expression changed slightly.
"Where did you get this?"
Arya looked confused.
"My mother."
"Your mother's name?"
She hesitated.
The rain continued falling between them.
"Anna Bennett."
The alley became silent.
Adrian stared at the necklace.
Anna Bennett.
A name he had not heard in twelve years.
A name connected to a secret someone had killed to protect.
One of his men noticed his reaction.
"Boss?"
Adrian closed his hand around the pendant.
"Bring her to my car."
Arya immediately shook her head.
"No."
Adrian looked at her.
"I said no."
"You can't stay here."
"I don't know you."
"You don't need to."
His voice was firm.
"Because the people who did this know exactly who you are."
Arya froze.
The words hit harder than the attack.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Because he didn't know the full truth yet.
But he knew one thing.
Random people did not attack someone wearing Anna Bennett's necklace.
And random people did not leave someone alive unless they wanted them to suffer.
His men carefully helped Arya stand.
She almost collapsed immediately.
Adrian caught her before she hit the ground.
For a second, neither of them moved.
Arya looked up at him.
She expected coldness.
She expected cruelty.
Instead, she saw something she didn't understand.
Concern.
Real concern.
It scared her more.
Because kindness from dangerous people always came with a price.
"I need answers," Adrian said quietly.
Arya looked away.
"I don't have any."
Adrian looked at the broken necklace in his hand.
"Yes, you do."
The car door opened.
The men waited.
Arya hesitated before stepping forward.
She had spent years surviving by trusting nobody.
Now she was getting into a car with the most dangerous man she had ever seen.
But staying in that alley meant waiting for the people who left her there to return.
So she made a choice.
She got inside.
The car disappeared into the city.
Neither of them noticed the motorcycle parked two blocks away.
Neither of them noticed the man watching through the rain.
Neither of them noticed the phone in his hand as he sent a message:
"She is with Adrian Voss."
A reply came seconds later.
May you like
Three words.
"Then kill him too."
