Chapter 5 - The Daughter of the Forgotten Secret

The man standing at the entrance of the Voss estate was not old.

That was what frightened Arya the most.

She expected someone who looked like a monster.

Someone whose face showed years of cruelty.

Instead, he looked calm.

Polished.

Almost ordinary.

He wore a dark gray suit.

His hair was perfectly styled.

His expression carried the confidence of someone who had never been told no.

But when his eyes landed on Arya, the calm disappeared.

Recognition replaced it.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Like he had been searching for her for years.

Adrian immediately stepped forward.

"Marcus."

The man smiled.

"So you remember me."

Arya looked at Adrian.

"You know him?"

Adrian did not answer.

That scared her more than anything.

Because Adrian always had an answer.

Always.

Marcus slowly entered the hallway.

The men behind him moved with military precision.

Not criminals.

Not ordinary guards.

Professionals.

"I didn't expect you to keep her alive this long."

Arya felt her stomach tighten.

"Keep me alive?"

Marcus looked at her.

"Your mother never told you, did she?"

Anna immediately stepped in front of Arya.

"Don't listen to him."

Marcus laughed softly.

"Still playing the protective mother."

His eyes moved back to Anna.

"You ran for years."

"And you still found her."

Anna's face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

Arya had never seen her mother look afraid before.

Not even when she disappeared.

Not even when Arya was attacked.

This was different.

"Who is he?" Arya asked.

Nobody answered.

So she looked directly at Marcus.

"Who are you?"

Marcus smiled.

"My name is Marcus Hale."

The name meant nothing to Arya.

But Adrian reacted.

His jaw tightened.

And that told her everything.

"You know him."

Adrian's voice was cold.

"He worked with my father."

Marcus nodded.

"Worked for him."

The distinction was important.

Arya noticed.

"What does he want?"

Marcus looked at the flash drive in Adrian's hand.

"That."

Adrian closed his fist around it.

"You came here for this."

"Partly."

Again.

That word.

Partly.

Arya hated that everyone around her seemed to know a different version of the truth.

Marcus took another step.

"The drive belongs to me."

Anna shook her head.

"No."

Marcus looked at her.

"You still think you have a choice?"

Arya saw Adrian move slightly.

Protective.

Ready.

Marcus noticed.

"You always were predictable, Adrian."

"What does that mean?"

Marcus smiled.

"It means your father was right about you."

Adrian's eyes darkened.

"Don't mention him."

"Why?"

Marcus tilted his head.

"Because every time you hear his name, you remember the night you failed him."

The words hit.

Arya saw it.

The smallest reaction.

The pain behind Adrian's eyes.

Marcus saw it too.

And enjoyed it.

"You spent fifteen years blaming yourself."

Adrian said nothing.

"But you never asked the right question."

"What question?"

Marcus looked toward Arya.

"Who was your father really protecting?"

The room became silent.

Arya felt the answer before anyone spoke.

It was her.

"No."

The word came from Anna.

Marcus looked at her.

"Tell her."

Anna's face turned pale.

"Stop."

"She deserves to know."

Adrian looked at Anna.

"What is he talking about?"

Anna closed her eyes.

For years, she had carried this secret.

And now there was nowhere left to hide it.

"Arya..."

Arya waited.

Her entire life felt like it was falling apart piece by piece.

"Your father wasn't protecting a file."

Anna whispered.

"He was protecting you."

The words were quiet.

But they changed everything.

Arya stared.

"What?"

Anna stepped closer.

"When your father discovered what Victor Voss was doing, he found evidence."

"The evidence on the drive?"

Anna nodded.

"But there was something else."

"What?"

Anna looked at her daughter.

"You."

Arya shook her head.

"I don't understand."

"Your father discovered that Victor wasn't just involved in illegal business."

Anna looked at Adrian.

"He was creating a system."

Adrian's expression changed.

"A system?"

"A list."

Anna continued.

"Names. Payments. People who controlled judges, politicians, companies."

Marcus interrupted.

"And one name was more important than all the others."

Arya looked at him.

"Whose?"

Marcus smiled.

"Your father's."

Silence.

Arya felt lost.

"Why?"

Marcus looked at Adrian.

"Because your father knew too much."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Then why was Arya involved?"

Marcus looked at her.

"Because your father hid the final proof where nobody would think to look."

Arya's hand moved toward the necklace.

The broken necklace.

The one her mother gave her.

"No."

Anna nodded slowly.

"The necklace wasn't just a necklace."

Arya felt cold.

"It was a key."

The room went silent.

Adrian looked at the pendant.

The same pendant he had held in the alley.

The same pendant that started everything.

Marcus smiled.

"And now you understand why everyone wanted her."

Arya looked at Adrian.

"Did you know?"

He didn't answer immediately.

That hurt.

"Adrian."

His eyes met hers.

"No."

The answer came quickly.

"I didn't know."

She searched his face.

And believed him.

Because for the first time, he looked just as lost as she felt.

Then Marcus laughed.

"That's the problem with Adrian."

Nobody moved.

"He always thinks he is protecting people."

Marcus looked around the room.

"But he never notices when someone is protecting him."

A sudden sound came from upstairs.

Everyone turned.

A guard rushed down the hallway.

"Boss."

Adrian looked at him.

"What happened?"

The guard looked nervous.

"We found someone inside the archive room."

Adrian's expression changed.

"Impossible."

The guard swallowed.

"They left something behind."

"What?"

The guard looked toward Arya.

"A photograph."

Nobody spoke.

The guard handed it to Adrian.

Adrian looked at it.

And froze.

Arya noticed.

"What is it?"

Adrian didn't answer.

She stepped closer.

The photograph was old.

The edges were damaged.

It showed three people.

A younger Anna.

Arya's father.

And a baby.

Arya stared.

The baby was wrapped in a white blanket.

On the back of the photo were handwritten words.

Adrian read them silently.

Then his face changed.

"What does it say?" Arya asked.

Slowly, Adrian turned the photograph over.

Three words were written behind it.

Not a message.

Not a warning.

A name.

A name that made Anna cover her mouth in horror.

May you like

Because it wasn't Arya's name.

It was the name of the person standing beside her.
