Chapter 9 - The Person I Trusted Most

The warehouse doors opened completely.

And I saw her.

For one second, my mind refused to understand.

Because the person standing there was impossible.

Someone who had sat beside me during my worst days.

Someone who had held my hand when I cried.

Someone who knew every secret I thought I had.

"Clara."

Her voice was soft.

Familiar.

The same voice that had comforted me for years.

But now it sounded different.

Because I knew what I had learned tonight.

Everyone had a hidden version of themselves.

And she was no exception.

My mother's face turned pale.

Dominic stepped forward.

"No."

The woman stopped.

She looked at him.

Then at me.

And slowly lowered her eyes.

"Dominic."

The way she said his name made my stomach tighten.

Because there was history there.

A history I didn't know.

A history everyone had hidden.

I looked at her.

"Why are you here?"

She didn't answer.

That silence was enough.

My fingers tightened around the letter.

The letter from my father.

The letter that said the person who betrayed him was someone I called family.

Someone close.

Someone I trusted.

The woman standing in front of me looked at the paper in my hand.

And fear appeared in her eyes.

Not surprise.

Fear.

"You found it."

My breathing stopped.

Dominic immediately turned toward her.

"You knew about the letter?"

She looked away.

And that was the answer.

I felt something inside me crack.

"No."

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

"Not you."

The woman looked at me.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Clara..."

"Please."

I shook my head.

"Don't say my name like you still know me."

The words hurt.

But they were true.

She had known me.

She had known everything.

And she still kept secrets.

Dominic looked between us.

"Who is she?"

The question surprised me.

Because Dominic didn't know.

Not everything.

Not this.

The woman looked at him.

"My name is Elena."

A pause.

"I'm Clara's godmother."

Dominic's expression changed.

Because he understood.

Another connection.

Another person tied to my father's disappearance.

I stared at Elena.

"You knew my father."

She nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"You knew he was alive."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

The answer was like a knife.

I looked away.

Because hearing it was worse than imagining it.

"How long?"

Elena swallowed.

"Since the night he disappeared."

Nobody moved.

My mother closed her eyes.

Dominic looked at her.

"You were there?"

Elena nodded.

"I was."

The warehouse became silent.

Even Adrian watched her carefully.

"What happened?"

Elena looked at me.

And for a moment, I saw the woman I remembered.

The woman who brought me birthday cakes.

The woman who stayed with me when my mother was sick.

The woman I trusted.

Then she spoke.

"Your father didn't run."

I waited.

"He was taken."

My heart dropped.

"By who?"

Elena looked at Alessandro.

Then Dominic.

Then the ground.

"By people who believed the evidence he had would destroy them."

"Who?"

Her lips trembled.

"I don't know everyone."

Nobody believed that.

Not even her.

"But I know one thing."

She looked directly at Dominic.

"His father was involved."

Dominic closed his eyes.

Like hearing it again somehow made it worse.

I watched him.

And for the first time, I realized something.

Dominic wasn't just discovering my father's story.

He was discovering his own.

Elena stepped closer.

"I tried to help him."

My anger returned.

"Then why didn't you help me?"

She stopped.

"I was a child."

"I know."

My voice broke.

"That's why it hurts."

She cried silently.

"Your father made me promise."

"A promise to lie?"

"A promise to keep you alive."

I looked at Dominic.

Another promise.

Another reason.

Another person who decided my truth was less important than my safety.

"I am tired of people protecting me."

The words came out softly.

"I am tired of being the only person who doesn't know what is happening in my own life."

Nobody argued.

Because nobody could.

Adrian walked toward the table.

"Enough secrets."

Everyone looked at him.

He picked up the old recorder.

"Your father didn't leave all of this because he wanted revenge."

He looked at me.

"He left it because he knew the truth would eventually come for you."

I stared at him.

"What truth?"

Adrian pressed a button on the recorder.

Static filled the warehouse.

Then my father's voice appeared.

"If you are hearing this..."

A pause.

"Then Elena has failed to keep you away."

Elena covered her mouth.

My father's voice continued.

"Clara, there is something you need to understand."

The recording changed.

A younger version of my father's voice.

Fear.

Exhaustion.

Pain.

"The person who betrayed me was not acting alone."

Dominic looked up.

"What?"

The recording continued.

"They had help from someone close to me."

My fingers went cold.

Again.

The same words.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Then my father's next sentence made everyone freeze.

"The person who helped them was someone I believed would protect my daughter."

The recorder clicked.

Static.

Then silence.

I looked around the warehouse.

At every person.

My mother.

Dominic.

Alessandro.

Elena.

Adrian.

Who?

Who had my father trusted enough to give access to everything?

Adrian looked toward Dominic.

"Your father wasn't the only one hiding something."

Dominic's face hardened.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Instead, he walked toward the old boxes stacked against the wall.

He opened one.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

And a small black folder.

My mother immediately stepped forward.

"No."

Adrian looked at her.

"It is time."

"What is inside?"

He handed the folder to me.

I hesitated.

Because I already knew.

Whatever was inside had survived eighteen years.

Whatever was inside had destroyed my family.

I opened it.

The first page was a report.

The second page was a photograph.

And the third page...

was a birth certificate.

I frowned.

Because the name on it wasn't mine.

It belonged to another child.

A child born the same night as me.

I looked at Dominic.

"Who is this?"

Nobody answered.

I turned the page.

There was a handwritten note attached.

My father's handwriting.

One sentence.

My hands started shaking.

Because I recognized the words.

The same handwriting.

The same warning.

The same fear.

I read it aloud.

"Clara was never the only child."

The room went completely silent.

My mother gasped.

Dominic stared at the document.

Adrian whispered:

"Now you understand why your father disappeared."

The lights suddenly flickered.

A sound came from outside.

A car.

Then another.

Dominic immediately looked toward the entrance.

His expression changed.

"Everyone move."

The warehouse doors began shaking.

Someone was trying to open them.

Elena stepped backward.

Her face turned white.

"No."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She whispered:

"They found us."

The door handle moved.

Slowly.

Once.

Twice.

Then it stopped.

Everyone waited.

Dominic raised his weapon.

The lock clicked.

May you like

The door began to open.

And the person standing outside was holding a photograph of the same child from the file...
