Chapter 10 - The Child Who Was Erased

The warehouse door opened slowly.

Nobody moved.

Not Dominic.

Not Alessandro.

Not even Adrian.

Because the person standing outside wasn't a stranger.

It was someone carrying a piece of the past.

A photograph.

The same photograph that had been hidden inside my father's files.

The same child.

The same face.

My hands went cold.

The person stepped into the light.

A woman.

Around my age.

Dark hair.

Same eyes.

Same expression of confusion and fear that I had seen in the mirror my entire life.

She looked at me.

And stopped.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered:

"No..."

My mother made a sound behind me.

A sound I had never heard from her before.

Pure fear.

"Emma."

The woman's eyes moved to my mother.

And everything changed.

Because she knew that name.

Not Clara.

Emma.

A name that wasn't mine.

A name that belonged to someone else.

But the way my mother said it...

The way she looked at this woman...

It wasn't a mistake.

It was recognition.

I turned slowly.

"Mom?"

Nobody answered.

The woman outside held the photograph tighter.

Her hands were shaking.

"You know me."

My mother looked like she couldn't breathe.

"I thought..."

She stopped.

The woman laughed softly.

But there was no happiness in it.

"You thought I was gone."

The words hit the room.

Dominic looked at me.

Then at the woman.

Then at the file in my hand.

His face changed.

Because he understood before I did.

"Clara..."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He didn't answer.

And I hated that.

I hated that everyone always knew the next page before me.

The woman stepped closer.

Her eyes never left mine.

"I have been looking for you."

My heart raced.

"Who are you?"

She looked at my mother.

Then back at me.

"My name is Emma."

The name echoed.

The same name my mother had whispered.

The same name written on the hidden documents.

I shook my head.

"No."

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"I know this is impossible."

She touched the photograph.

"But it's true."

Dominic stepped between us.

"How did you get that picture?"

Emma looked at him.

"You know who I am?"

His silence answered.

Her expression changed.

Pain.

"Of course."

She looked at me.

"Everyone knew except us."

I felt dizzy.

"Except us?"

She nodded.

"Me and you."

My mother finally spoke.

"Clara..."

I turned toward her.

"No."

My voice broke.

"Don't."

She stopped.

Because she knew.

I couldn't hear another explanation.

Not another secret.

Not another reason.

Emma looked at me sadly.

"You really don't know."

I laughed quietly.

"What don't I know?"

She took a breath.

"The truth about the night we were born."

The warehouse went silent.

I stared at her.

"We?"

Emma nodded.

"My mother gave birth to two girls."

My heart stopped.

"No."

The word came out automatically.

Because my whole life had one truth.

I was an only child.

My mother had one daughter.

Me.

Emma looked at the file.

"The record was changed."

Dominic took the document from my hand.

He scanned the page.

His face became unreadable.

"What happened?"

Emma looked at him.

"Your grandfather happened."

Nobody spoke.

She continued.

"Your families were fighting over power."

She looked at me.

"And my mother found out something she wasn't supposed to know."

My mother closed her eyes.

I turned toward her.

"Tell me she is lying."

My mother's silence destroyed me.

A tear fell down her face.

"I wanted to tell you."

The words felt empty.

"You always wanted to tell me."

I looked away.

"But you never did."

My mother cried.

"Because I was afraid."

"Of what?"

She looked at Emma.

"Of losing both of my daughters."

That sentence broke something inside me.

Because suddenly I understood.

The lies weren't created because I didn't matter.

They were created because I mattered too much.

But that didn't make them hurt less.

Emma stepped closer.

"I wasn't supposed to survive."

Everyone looked at her.

"What?"

She looked at Dominic.

"Your grandfather believed one child would be easier to hide."

My blood ran cold.

"What are you saying?"

Emma swallowed.

"The night we were born, someone took me."

The warehouse became silent.

"My mother thought I died."

She looked at my mother.

"But someone saved me."

My mother whispered:

"Your father."

I turned.

"My father?"

Emma nodded.

"He found me."

The pieces started connecting.

The missing child.

The hidden records.

The secret my father died protecting.

"He raised me?"

Emma shook her head.

"No."

A pause.

"He protected me."

My chest tightened.

"Then where were you?"

Emma looked down.

"Moving from place to place."

"Why?"

Her answer was quiet.

"Because the people who erased me were still searching."

Dominic stepped forward.

"Who?"

Emma looked at him.

And for the first time, she looked afraid.

"The same person who ordered your father's disappearance."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Who?"

Emma looked toward Alessandro.

Everyone followed her gaze.

Alessandro immediately shook his head.

"No."

Emma stared at him.

"You knew."

Alessandro looked away.

"I suspected."

My anger exploded.

"Everyone suspected."

My voice echoed through the warehouse.

"Everyone knew pieces."

I looked around.

"My mother."

"Dominic."

"Alessandro."

"Elena."

"Everyone."

I pointed at myself.

"And I was the only person living inside this story who didn't know my own name."

Nobody spoke.

Dominic stepped closer.

"Clara."

I looked at him.

"I am sorry."

Two words.

Simple.

But for the first time, I believed he meant them.

Not as a powerful man.

Not as someone trying to fix a problem.

As a person who knew he had hurt me.

Emma watched us.

Then she said:

"There's something else."

Everyone looked at her.

She reached into her coat.

And pulled out an old envelope.

My father's handwriting.

Again.

My entire body froze.

"No."

Emma held it out.

"He left this for both of us."

Both of us.

The words felt strange.

Like my life was expanding into something I didn't recognize.

I took the envelope.

Emma's hand touched mine.

And the connection was immediate.

Not magical.

Not impossible.

Just familiar.

Like meeting someone you had been missing without knowing.

I opened the letter.

The first line made me stop.

My daughters,

If you are reading this together, then the truth has finally found you.

My vision blurred.

I continued.

I spent eighteen years protecting one secret.

Not because I was ashamed.

Because I knew the world would try to use it against you.

I looked at Emma.

Then at Dominic.

The next sentence made my heart race.

The person who separated you was not my enemy.

They were someone who loved you.

The room went silent.

Someone who loved us.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Then the final page slipped from the envelope.

A name was written there.

A name I knew.

A name that made Dominic suddenly reach for his phone.

Because at the exact same moment...

his screen lit up.

One new message.

From the person whose name was written on the paper.

Dominic read it.

And his face turned completely white.

Because the message contained only five words:

May you like

"I know you found her."

Then the warehouse lights went out...
