Chapter 7 - The Recording My Father Hid

"I know you came with Dominic..."
My father's voice echoed through the hidden room.
Every person in the warehouse froze.
Even Dominic.
Especially Dominic.
Because my father's words weren't angry.
They weren't surprised.
They were almost like he expected this exact moment.
Like he had been waiting eighteen years for me to stand there.
I stared into the darkness beyond the hidden door.
"Where are you?"
My voice shook.
No answer.
Only silence.
Then the sound of a machine turning on.
A projector.
A small light appeared inside the room.
And suddenly, a screen on the far wall came alive.
My father's face appeared.
Older than the photographs.
Tired.
But alive.
He sat in a dark room, looking directly at the camera.
Looking directly at me.
"Clara."
I covered my mouth.
Because hearing him say my name felt impossible.
Like a memory had become real.
"If you are seeing this, then the person I trusted most failed to keep you away."
My eyes moved toward Dominic.
He looked like the words had physically hurt him.
My father continued.
"Dominic Russo."
The room became colder.
"I know you are there."
Dominic didn't move.
My father looked into the camera.
"You promised me you would protect her."
A pause.
"But you never promised you would tell her the truth."
Dominic lowered his eyes.
And I felt something break inside me.
Because my father knew him.
Not just knew of him.
Knew him.
"Clara."
My father's voice softened.
"Before you hear anything else, I need you to understand one thing."
The screen flickered.
"You were never a weakness."
A tear fell before I could stop it.
"For years, people will try to convince you that your kindness made you easy to control."
My father shook his head.
"They are wrong."
He leaned closer.
"The reason you survived is because you trusted your heart when everyone else trusted power."
Nobody spoke.
Not my mother.
Not Dominic.
Not Alessandro.
The only sound was my father's voice.
"The night I disappeared, I discovered something that could destroy two families."
The screen changed.
Documents appeared.
Old files.
Financial records.
Names.
Dates.
"This was never about money."
My father's face returned.
"It was about control."
Dominic stepped closer to the screen.
"What did you find?"
My father answered as if he heard him.
"I found proof that someone inside the Russo organization was manipulating both sides."
Alessandro's expression changed.
My mother looked down.
I noticed.
And that scared me.
Because she knew more.
Much more.
My father continued.
"Someone wanted a war between families."
The screen showed photographs.
Meetings.
Transactions.
People shaking hands.
Then one photo appeared.
A man standing beside my father.
A man I recognized.
Not because I knew him.
Because Dominic had mentioned him before.
His father.
My father's voice became quieter.
"The man who started everything was not my enemy."
A pause.
"He was yours."
The room went silent.
Dominic stared at the screen.
"My father."
It was barely a whisper.
My mother closed her eyes.
My father continued.
"I found out too late."
The image changed again.
A handwritten note appeared.
"This person knew I had the evidence."
My heart raced.
"Who?"
My father's face returned.
"I never found out who betrayed me."
A pause.
"But I found out who helped them."
The screen went black.
Then a single name appeared.
A name I had never heard.
But everyone else reacted.
Dominic took one step backward.
Alessandro's face turned pale.
My mother whispered:
"No."
I looked at them.
"Who is that?"
Nobody answered.
I turned toward Dominic.
"Who is that?"
His jaw tightened.
Then he finally spoke.
"My grandfather."
The words felt unreal.
A family secret.
Buried deeper than I imagined.
My father's recording continued.
"Clara, if you are watching this, do not trust anyone who tells you this is over."
The screen flickered.
"Because the person who started this has been waiting for you to find this place."
The warehouse became completely silent.
Then my father's final message appeared.
"Your mother knows where the original evidence is."
I turned.
My mother's face changed.
"Mom?"
She didn't answer.
"Mom."
She looked at me.
And the sadness in her eyes told me everything.
"You knew."
She swallowed.
"I knew part of it."
"Part?"
My voice rose.
"Everyone keeps saying they only knew part."
I stepped closer.
"My whole life is built from pieces everyone else decided I was allowed to have."
My mother cried silently.
"I was trying to keep you alive."
I shook my head.
"No."
The word came out quietly.
"You were trying to keep me away."
She looked down.
Because she couldn't deny it.
Dominic moved toward me.
"Clara."
I looked at him.
"Did you know about the recording?"
"No."
"Did you know my father made this plan?"
"No."
"Did you know my mother was involved?"
A pause.
That pause was enough.
My chest tightened.
"You did."
Dominic looked away.
"Not everything."
I laughed.
A painful sound.
"Not everything."
The same answer.
Again.
Always the same answer.
Dominic stepped closer.
"I knew your mother had contact with Alessandro."
"And you didn't tell me."
"I didn't know if it was true."
"You didn't tell me."
His silence confirmed it.
I walked away.
Not because I hated him.
Because I needed space to breathe.
The man who had protected me from every danger had become part of the thing hurting me.
And I didn't know how to separate the two.
Alessandro picked up the recorder from the table.
"There is more."
Everyone looked at him.
My mother immediately shook her head.
"No."
Alessandro stared at her.
"She deserves to know."
My mother's expression changed.
"What happened after the night he disappeared."
I looked at her.
"Mom."
She closed her eyes.
"I found your father."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
"Not after eighteen years."
Her voice broke.
"That night."
The warehouse seemed to tilt.
"You saw him?"
She nodded.
"He was injured."
My breathing became shallow.
"He told me he had to leave."
"Why?"
My mother looked at Dominic.
"Because someone was coming for Clara."
The words made Dominic freeze.
"What?"
My mother looked at him.
"He knew they would use her to get to him."
Dominic's face changed.
The same realization appeared in his eyes.
The same one that had been haunting him all night.
"This was never about protecting her from my enemies."
My mother shook her head.
"No."
She looked at me.
"He was protecting you from his own family."
Nobody spoke.
Then the lights inside the warehouse went out.
Complete darkness.
A second later, Dominic grabbed my hand.
A protective instinct.
But before anyone could move...
A sound came from behind us.
A slow clap.
Someone was inside the warehouse.
Someone who had entered without opening the main door.
Dominic pulled me closer.
"Who is there?"
A man's voice answered from the darkness.
"Someone who has been waiting for Clara to finally come home."
The emergency lights flickered on.
May you like
And standing beside the old storage room door...
was the person my father warned me never to trust...
