Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind The Marriage Contract

The envelope landed on the marble table between us.

For a moment, nobody moved.

The Grand Ballroom was still filled with hundreds of people, but it felt like Dominic, Victoria, and I were standing inside a different world.

A world where every breath mattered.

Where every word could destroy everything.

Victoria looked satisfied.

She had wanted this moment.

Not the wine.

Not the humiliation.

This.

The moment where she believed she could finally expose me.

Dominic stared at the envelope without touching it.

His face was unreadable.

But I knew him.

I knew the smallest changes.

The slight tightening of his jaw.

The way his fingers stopped moving.

The way his eyes became colder.

Something about that envelope frightened him.

And that frightened me.

"Dominic," Victoria said softly, "why don't you tell everyone what it is?"

Nobody spoke.

The guests nearby pretended not to listen.

But everyone was listening.

Because secrets were the most expensive thing in Dominic Russo's world.

And Victoria had just placed one on the table.

I looked at him.

"What's inside?"

His eyes moved to mine.

For a second, the powerful man everyone feared disappeared.

I saw something else.

A man who was afraid I would see something I couldn't forgive.

"Clara."

His voice was low.

"Not here."

That answer hurt.

Not because of the envelope.

Because of the hesitation.

Victoria smiled.

"There it is."

She crossed her arms.

"The same Dominic Russo everyone knows."

I turned toward her.

"What does that mean?"

She looked at me with pity.

And somehow that was worse than cruelty.

"It means you never asked the right questions."

Dominic stepped forward.

"Enough."

Victoria laughed.

"You always did this."

She looked at him.

"Protecting people from the truth because you think you know what's best for them."

The room grew quieter.

I felt Dominic's jacket around my shoulders.

I smelled his cologne.

A scent that usually made me feel safe.

But suddenly, I wasn't sure anymore.

Because Victoria wasn't acting like someone making up a story.

She was acting like someone holding a weapon.

And Dominic knew exactly where to hide the wound.

"I think everyone deserves to know," Victoria continued.

Dominic's eyes turned dangerous.

"Choose your next words carefully."

For the first time that night, Victoria looked uncertain.

Only for a second.

Then she opened the envelope.

She pulled out a document.

Not a photo.

Not a letter.

A contract.

My stomach dropped.

Because I recognized the format.

The legal language.

The signature lines.

I had seen those papers before.

My own papers.

Victoria held the document higher.

"Five years ago, Dominic Russo offered Clara Jenkins twenty million dollars."

A murmur moved through the ballroom.

My face went cold.

"Stop."

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Victoria ignored me.

"Twenty million dollars to become his wife."

The whispers became louder.

I looked at Dominic.

He didn't deny it.

And that was enough.

I felt every person in the room looking at me differently.

Not as the woman Dominic chose.

As a woman who was bought.

Victoria saw the pain on my face.

And smiled.

"Tell them, Clara."

I said nothing.

Because I knew the truth.

I knew the marriage contract.

I knew every clause.

I knew exactly why it existed.

But hearing it spoken by someone who wanted to hurt me made everything sound different.

It made something complicated sound simple.

It made something personal sound like a transaction.

Dominic took the document from Victoria's hand.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"That contract was created for her protection."

Victoria rolled her eyes.

"Protection?"

She looked around.

"That's what he told you?"

My fingers curled around the jacket.

Dominic had never lied to me.

At least, I thought he hadn't.

When we first met, I was investigating a financial network connected to his companies.

Someone was moving money through fake accounts.

Someone was trying to frame him.

I found the pattern.

I found the person behind it.

And then I became the next target.

The threats started slowly.

A note on my car.

A stranger outside my apartment.

A photograph of my mother's care facility sent to my phone.

Dominic didn't ask permission.

He appeared at my door one night.

He told me I needed protection.

I refused.

He offered me a contract marriage.

Not because he wanted control.

Because he wanted enemies to believe I was untouchable.

His wife.

The only person they couldn't threaten without starting a war.

I added seventeen clauses.

I demanded independence.

Separate accounts.

My own legal representation.

The right to leave whenever I wanted.

Dominic agreed to every single one.

That was the part nobody knew.

He didn't buy me.

He protected me.

But looking around the ballroom, I realized nobody saw that.

They only saw the number.

Twenty million dollars.

"Say something," Victoria whispered.

I looked at Dominic.

He was watching me.

Not the crowd.

Not Victoria.

Me.

And suddenly I understood.

He wasn't worried about losing his reputation.

He was worried about losing me.

"Clara," he said quietly.

"I should have told them."

The honesty surprised me.

Because Dominic Russo rarely admitted mistakes.

Victoria stepped closer.

"Finally."

But Dominic continued.

"I should have told them before someone else used it against you."

The room fell silent.

He turned toward everyone.

"My marriage to Clara started as a legal arrangement."

The words hurt.

Even though I knew they were true.

But then he reached for my hand.

In front of everyone.

"That was eighteen months ago."

His thumb brushed against my fingers.

"Since then, nothing about what I feel for her has been a contract."

My eyes burned.

Victoria's smile disappeared slightly.

Dominic looked directly at her.

"You left when my world collapsed."

Her expression changed.

"You ran when things became difficult."

A few guests looked uncomfortable.

"But Clara stayed."

His voice became colder.

"She stood beside me when everyone believed I was guilty."

Nobody spoke.

"She risked her life to protect mine."

He looked down at our joined hands.

"And she still thinks she is the person who should be embarrassed tonight."

My breath caught.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what I was feeling.

Dominic stepped closer.

"You want to know the truth?"

Victoria stared at him.

He looked around the ballroom.

"The contract expired three months ago."

A wave of surprise moved through the crowd.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew what came next.

The contract had expired.

But we were still together.

Still living in the same house.

Still waking up beside each other.

Still pretending we didn't feel something we were afraid to name.

Dominic turned back to me.

"Clara."

I looked at him.

His expression softened.

"Do you remember the last clause you added?"

I frowned.

The last clause.

The one I wrote myself.

The one I thought he would never accept.

"If either person wants to leave after the contract ends, there will be no consequences."

My throat tightened.

Dominic held my hand.

"I kept that clause."

Victoria watched us.

Confusion replaced her confidence.

"Why?"

Dominic didn't look away from me.

"Because I wanted her to stay when she had every reason to leave."

The ballroom went silent.

Then Victoria laughed.

But it sounded different now.

Desperate.

"You expect everyone to believe that?"

Dominic finally released my hand.

He walked toward the center of the room.

"The contract was never the secret."

He looked at Victoria.

"The secret is why Clara needed it."

My heart dropped.

Because I knew.

We had never told anyone.

Not even the people closest to Dominic.

The threats.

The investigation.

The person behind everything.

Victoria's expression changed.

She knew.

She knew more than she should.

Dominic noticed it too.

"Where did you get that document?"

Victoria looked away.

For the first time that night, she looked afraid.

"I found it."

"No."

Dominic's voice turned sharp.

"You didn't."

The guards near the door immediately straightened.

The entire room felt the shift.

Victoria swallowed.

"You think you know everything."

Dominic stepped closer.

"I know you disappeared five years ago."

Her face changed.

"I know you returned tonight knowing exactly where Clara would be standing."

Silence.

"And I know someone gave you that contract."

Victoria said nothing.

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

She looked at me.

Then at him.

And whispered:

"You really never told her, did you?"

A cold feeling moved through my body.

"Told me what?"

Victoria smiled faintly.

Not with victory.

With fear.

"Clara..."

She reached into her purse.

This time, she didn't pull out a document.

She pulled out a photograph.

She placed it on the table.

Dominic saw it.

And all color disappeared from his face.

Because the photograph showed a person I had never met.

But Dominic recognized immediately.

The person who had been watching me for eighteen months.

The person who had started the threats.

The person he believed was gone forever.

Dominic whispered the name.

"Impossible."

Then the ballroom doors opened behind us.

And a man's voice came from the darkness.

"Hello, Dominic."

May you like

Everyone turned.

Because the man standing at the entrance was supposed to be dead...
