Chapter 5 - The Door My Father Left Behind

The screen went black.

But my father's voice stayed in my head.

If you are watching this, it means Dominic failed to keep you away from the truth.

I couldn't move.

I couldn't breathe.

For eighteen years, I had imagined my father in a thousand different ways.

Dead.

Lost.

Afraid.

Maybe somewhere far away, unable to return.

But never this.

Never alive.

Never speaking my name.

Never leaving me a message.

Dominic stood beside me, staring at the blank screen.

The entire ballroom waited for him to react.

But he didn't.

And somehow, that scared me more.

Because Dominic Russo always reacted.

He was the man who could walk into a room and immediately know who was lying.

The man who could destroy an enemy without raising his voice.

The man who never looked uncertain.

Until now.

"Dominic."

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

He turned.

I saw the pain in his eyes.

"Clara..."

"Did you know?"

The question was simple.

But it carried everything.

Did you know my father was alive?

Did you know he was watching?

Did you know my entire life was built around a lie?

His silence answered before he did.

"No."

I searched his face.

"You're sure?"

"Yes."

The word came quickly.

Too quickly.

Then he lowered his voice.

"But I knew he might still be alive."

My heart broke in a way I didn't expect.

Not because of my father.

Because of him.

"You knew?"

Dominic looked away.

"Not like this."

I stepped back.

The jacket around my shoulders suddenly felt heavy.

"How long?"

"Clara."

"How long did you know there was a possibility?"

The ballroom became quiet.

Everyone was watching.

But I didn't care anymore.

I had spent eighteen months protecting Dominic's secrets.

Now I needed mine.

"I found evidence years ago," he said.

My throat tightened.

"Evidence?"

"Your father's disappearance was never investigated properly."

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

Dominic looked at Alessandro.

Then back at me.

"It means someone wanted everyone to stop searching."

The answer chilled me.

My father didn't simply disappear.

Someone erased him.

Alessandro picked up the old key from the table.

"The message was not for Dominic."

He looked at me.

"It was always for you."

I looked at the key.

"What does it open?"

Nobody answered.

And that was becoming the worst part.

Everyone knew pieces.

Nobody knew the whole truth.

I turned toward Victoria.

She looked away.

"Did you know about this?"

Her face changed.

"No."

I believed her.

That surprised me.

Because only an hour ago, I thought she was the villain of my entire night.

But now I understood something.

Everyone in this room had been fighting a different war.

And I was the battlefield.

Dominic stepped closer.

"You're not going anywhere alone."

I looked at him.

"My father told me to come alone."

His expression hardened.

"That's exactly why you won't."

"You don't get to decide that anymore."

The words came out sharper than I intended.

But they were true.

Something changed in Dominic's face.

Not anger.

Acceptance.

Because he knew.

He knew he had lost the right to protect me without my permission.

"I know."

The answer surprised me.

"I know I made that mistake."

I looked away.

Because hearing him admit it was harder than hearing him deny it.

Dominic Russo didn't apologize.

Not easily.

Not ever.

But tonight, he had apologized twice.

And somehow that made everything more painful.

Alessandro watched us silently.

Then he spoke.

"Your father chose Dominic for a reason."

I turned.

"What?"

"He could have sent the message anywhere."

Alessandro looked at the screen.

"But he chose this."

His eyes moved between Dominic and me.

"Because he knew Dominic would protect you."

A bitter laugh escaped me.

"Even when he hides things from me?"

Alessandro didn't answer.

Because he couldn't.

A security guard suddenly approached Dominic.

His expression was serious.

"Boss."

Dominic turned.

"What?"

"The location from the video."

Everyone looked at him.

"We tracked it."

Dominic's face changed.

"Where?"

The guard hesitated.

Then handed him a tablet.

Dominic looked down.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

"What is it?"

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"Dominic."

He turned the tablet toward me.

The location appeared.

A warehouse address.

I recognized it immediately.

My stomach dropped.

Because I had been there before.

Not recently.

Years ago.

Before I met Dominic.

Before I knew anything about his world.

It was the abandoned building my father used to take me to when I was a child.

The place I thought was just a storage warehouse.

The place my mother told me never to mention.

My hands started shaking.

"No."

Dominic looked at me.

"You know this place."

It wasn't a question.

I nodded slowly.

"When I was little, my father took me there."

Alessandro became completely still.

"Why?"

"I don't know."

My voice cracked.

"He said it was a place where he kept things that mattered."

Dominic looked at the key.

Then at me.

"What things?"

I swallowed.

"I never saw."

A memory came back.

A locked room.

A metal door.

My father's hand on my shoulder.

His voice.

Never open this.

Never.

No matter what happens.

I closed my eyes.

Because suddenly, I remembered something else.

The night he disappeared.

The last thing he said to me.

Not goodbye.

Not I love you.

Something strange.

Something I didn't understand at the time.

If anyone asks, you don't know me.

I opened my eyes.

Dominic was watching me.

"You remembered something."

I nodded.

And for the first time that night, I was afraid.

Not of the danger.

Of the possibility that my father had been preparing me for this moment since I was a child.

"I think he knew this day would come."

Dominic's expression darkened.

"No."

"What?"

"He didn't know."

He looked toward the entrance.

"He planned it."

The words made everyone silent.

A plan eighteen years in the making.

A message waiting.

A location waiting.

A daughter waiting.

And Dominic realized something.

My father hadn't disappeared.

He had hidden.

Waiting for the right moment.

The ballroom slowly emptied.

Guests were escorted away.

Security surrounded the exits.

But nobody left the room.

Not really.

Because everyone knew this was no longer about a ruined dress or a former fiancée.

This was about a secret that had survived eighteen years.

And it had finally found me.

Three hours later, we stood outside the old warehouse.

The city was silent.

The building looked exactly how I remembered it.

Broken windows.

Rusting metal.

A place forgotten by everyone.

Except us.

Dominic stood beside me.

"You don't have to do this."

I looked at him.

"Yes, I do."

He nodded.

No argument.

No command.

Just acceptance.

I held the old key in my hand.

The same key my mother had hidden.

The same key my father left behind.

I walked toward the door.

Every step felt like walking into my own past.

The lock was old.

But the key fit perfectly.

I turned it.

Click.

The door opened slightly.

A cold wind moved from inside.

Dominic immediately reached for my arm.

"Wait."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He stared into the darkness beyond the door.

His expression changed.

Because he saw something inside.

Something that made him forget to breathe.

"What is it?"

He didn't answer.

Then, from inside the warehouse...

May you like

a woman's voice whispered my name...

"Clara."
