Chapter 11 - The Name Hidden In The Message

The lights went out.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Three seconds was enough time for every secret in that warehouse to become a threat.

I couldn't see Dominic.

I couldn't see Emma.

I couldn't see anyone.

But I felt Dominic's hand find mine.

A second later, his voice cut through the darkness.

"Stay close to me."

Normally, those words would have made me feel safe.

Tonight, they reminded me of everything I still didn't know.

The emergency lights flickered back on.

Everyone was still standing.

But Dominic wasn't looking at the door.

He was looking at his phone.

The message was still open.

I know you found her.

Five words.

Five words that had changed his entire expression.

"Who sent it?"

My voice was quiet.

Dominic didn't answer immediately.

That was enough.

I took the phone from his hand.

He let me.

And that scared me.

Because Dominic Russo didn't let people take anything from him.

Not information.

Not control.

Not power.

The sender name was hidden.

Unknown number.

But underneath the message was a second line.

A location.

My blood went cold.

Because I recognized it.

The place.

The address.

The place where my father disappeared.

"No."

My voice shook.

Dominic looked at me.

"You know it?"

I nodded slowly.

"That's where my father was last seen."

Everyone became silent.

Emma stepped closer.

"Are you sure?"

I looked at her.

"I spent years trying to find records about that place."

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"The police file said there was nothing."

Adrian looked at the screen.

"Because someone removed it."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Alessandro.

And Alessandro looked away.

Again.

That was becoming a pattern.

A pattern I was tired of.

"Alessandro."

My voice was sharp.

"What do you know?"

He stayed silent.

Dominic stepped forward.

"Answer her."

For the first time, Alessandro looked at Dominic like he was no longer protecting him.

He looked at him like he was protecting a memory.

"Your father wasn't taken from that location."

Everyone froze.

"What?"

Alessandro looked at me.

"He went there willingly."

My heart dropped.

"Why?"

"Because someone called him."

"Who?"

Alessandro's expression changed.

And I knew.

He knew.

"Who called him?"

A long silence.

Then he said:

"My father."

Dominic closed his eyes.

The truth hurt him.

Even after everything.

"My grandfather."

Alessandro nodded.

"Yes."

The warehouse became heavier.

"My father wanted your father to bring the evidence."

Emma looked confused.

"Then why did he disappear?"

Alessandro looked at the floor.

"Because it was a trap."

I felt anger rising.

"Everyone knew."

Nobody responded.

"Everyone knew my father walked into a trap."

My voice cracked.

"And nobody stopped it."

Dominic stepped toward me.

"Clara..."

I moved away.

Not because I didn't want him near me.

Because I needed to understand.

For eighteen years, my family had been destroyed by one night.

And everyone in front of me had been standing near the truth.

Everyone except me.

Emma touched my arm.

"Clara."

I looked at her.

She looked as lost as I felt.

Maybe that was the only thing we shared.

We were both victims of the same silence.

"My father left something for us."

She held up the envelope.

The one from my father.

I had forgotten it was still there.

Two daughters.

One truth.

One secret.

I opened the letter again.

The final page had been folded.

Hidden.

A part of the message I hadn't seen.

My father's handwriting appeared.

If you found Emma, then you found the person who survived because of me.

My breathing stopped.

I looked at her.

The next line made my hands shake.

But if you found Clara, then you found the reason I ran.

I read it again.

And again.

The reason he ran.

Not because he was afraid.

Not because he wanted to disappear.

Because of me.

Dominic saw my expression.

"What does it say?"

I couldn't answer.

Emma took the paper gently.

She read the words.

Her face changed.

"What?"

I looked at her.

She looked terrified.

"Emma?"

She handed the letter back.

The final sentence was there.

The one I had missed.

Clara was never the target.

She was the key.

The room went silent.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

Then the sound of footsteps came from outside.

Everyone turned.

Dominic immediately raised his weapon.

But the footsteps stopped.

A voice came from beyond the warehouse.

A woman's voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

"Dominic."

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it before.

Not tonight.

Not in the warehouse.

Years ago.

The woman stepped into the light.

And I felt the world shift.

Because she wasn't carrying a weapon.

She wasn't carrying evidence.

She was carrying a photograph.

A photograph of my father.

Alive.

Standing beside her.

Dominic lowered his weapon slightly.

"No."

The woman looked at him.

"You should have known I would come back."

My mother whispered:

"Victoria..."

Everyone froze.

Victoria Montgomery.

The woman who had humiliated me hours earlier.

The woman who claimed she knew nothing.

The woman who had left Dominic five years ago.

She looked at me.

Then at Emma.

Then at the letter in my hand.

"I didn't come here to hurt you."

Nobody believed her.

Not after everything.

She took one step forward.

"I came because I was the one who helped your father escape."

The warehouse went silent.

Dominic stared at her.

"You're lying."

Victoria shook her head.

"No."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I was there that night."

She looked at me.

"And I know why your father disappeared."

I couldn't breathe.

"Why?"

Victoria looked down at the photograph.

Then she turned it over.

On the back was a handwritten note.

My father's handwriting.

Victoria held it out.

"I was supposed to give this to you when the time came."

Dominic stared at the note.

"Why now?"

Victoria looked at him.

"Because the person who has been hiding from you for eighteen years..."

She paused.

May you like

And slowly opened the photograph.

"...is standing inside this warehouse right now."
