Chapter 9 - The Second Glass

Cole lowered the rifle.
“Move.”
He was protecting them.
A shot exploded through the stained-glass window.
Cole fired back.
Graham pulled Rebecca and Nora behind the altar.
Federal agents entered seconds later.
The attacker escaped.
Cole surrendered.
“I stole your flash drive,” he admitted. “Marcus was tracking it.”
He had removed it to keep Marcus from locating Graham.
Cole then revealed the compound had an antidote.
Not a guaranteed cure.
But a treatment that could stop further damage and potentially allow Graham’s auditory system to recover.
“Where?”
“Vanessa has it.”
At the hospital, Vanessa gave them the location.
Inside her apartment refrigerator.
Graham began treatment that night.
Within forty-eight hours, the ringing softened.
For the first time in months, he heard Lily laugh.
Faintly.
Imperfectly.
But clearly enough to make him cry.
Lily touched his face.
“You heard?”
He signed yes.
She smiled.
Then everything changed again.
Rebecca examined the original compound.
“This isn’t my formula.”
Someone had modified it.
Cole denied doing so.
Vanessa denied knowing.
The modification made the drug far more dangerous.
Rebecca compared laboratory records.
The alteration had been authorized by Marcus.
Thomas had wanted Graham impaired.
Marcus had been trying to kill him slowly.
A death that looked neurological.
A grieving fiancée.
A grieving father.
A corporate succession crisis.
And a forged ownership transfer waiting underneath it all.
Graham finally saw the entire design.
Thomas was guilty.
Vanessa was guilty.
Cole was guilty.
But Marcus had turned their conspiracy into murder.
They decided to trap him.
Graham publicly announced his condition had worsened.
He postponed all corporate activity.
He also announced a private family dinner at the estate.
Marcus took the bait.
He contacted Vanessa.
She agreed to cooperate with investigators.
The dinner table was set exactly as it had been the night Lily warned Graham.
Same crystal.
Same flowers.
Same seating.
Graham sat down.
Vanessa placed a glass before him.
Her hand trembled.
Across the room, Lily watched from behind reinforced glass with Nora.
At 8:17 p.m., Marcus entered through the service corridor.
Cameras recorded everything.
He approached Vanessa.
“Did you do it?”
“Yes.”
“The full dose?”
Vanessa nodded.
Marcus smiled.
Then Graham lifted the glass.
Marcus watched.
Graham drank.
Vanessa’s face went white.
That had not been part of the plan.
The glass was supposed to contain water.
Graham immediately knew something was wrong.
Metallic taste.
His throat burned.
Marcus began laughing.
“You really thought I trusted her?”
Graham dropped the glass.
The room tilted.
Agents rushed forward.
Marcus ran.
Vanessa screamed for the antidote.
Lily struck the glass wall with both palms.
Her hands moved frantically.
“Second glass!”
Nora looked.
There were two identical glasses at Graham’s place.
Vanessa had switched one.
Marcus had switched it back.
Graham collapsed.
The last thing he saw was Lily pointing beneath the table.
Something was taped there.
Nora tore it free.
A syringe.
The antidote.
She ran toward Graham.
Then a gunshot sounded.
Nora stopped.
May you like
The syringe slipped from her fingers.
And someone else picked it up.
