Chapter 11 - Nora’s Last Recording

Graham reached the estate in eleven minutes.
The front doors were open.
Rebecca lay unconscious in the foyer.
Alive.
Nora was gone.
So was Lily.
A message waited on the dining table.
COME ALONE TO THE LAKE HOUSE.
Graham ignored the instruction.
Federal agents surrounded the property.
Inside, Vanessa held Lily but no weapon.
Nora sat beside her.
Graham stopped.
Something was wrong.
Nora was not restrained.
Vanessa whispered, “Close the door.”
Graham did.
Nora handed him a phone.
A recording played.
Marcus’s voice.
He had arranged Alexander’s death.
Vanessa had been driving, yes—but she had tried to stop.
The car’s brakes had been disabled.
Alexander stepped into the road believing she could stop.
She could not.
Vanessa had carried the guilt ever since.
Thomas later used the accident to control her.
“If you tell anyone,” he had said on the recording, “you go to prison.”
Graham looked at Vanessa.
“You should have told me.”
“I know.”
“You poisoned me.”
“I know.”
“You threatened Nora.”
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I know.”
There would be no romantic forgiveness.
No wedding.
But truth mattered.
Vanessa agreed to testify.
Then Nora showed Graham another recording.
Her mother Ruth.
Recorded days before her death.
Ruth described the entire Mercer operation.
At the end, she addressed Nora.
“If anything happens to me, protect Lily. The Mercers will eventually discover who her father was.”
Nora broke down.
Graham held her.
Lily climbed between them.
For the first time, the three looked less like employer, employee, and child.
They looked like what they had become.
Family.
But Ruth’s recording contained one final clue.
A numbered bank account.
Graham traced it.
Payments continued after Marcus’s arrest.
Someone else was funding the operation.
Someone inside the family.
Evelyn reviewed the account.
Her face changed.
“I know that number.”
“Whose?”
She looked at Rebecca.
Rebecca looked away.
Graham noticed.
“Mom?”
Rebecca stood.
“I need to explain.”
“Then explain.”
She admitted the original research had not belonged to Thomas.
It belonged to her.
She had created the compound for therapeutic neurological research.
Thomas weaponized it.
But after disappearing, Rebecca continued developing related compounds privately.
Someone stole her work.
“Who?”
Before she answered, the power failed.
The lake house went black.
A vehicle stopped outside.
Doors opened.
Footsteps approached.
Graham moved Lily behind him.
The front door unlocked.
Evelyn whispered one name.
“Thomas.”
But the man who stepped inside was not Thomas.
It was Daniel Reeves.
May you like
Graham’s security director.
And he was holding Thomas’s gun.
