Chapter 6 - The Woman Vanessa Wanted Gone

Graham found the child beneath the stairs.
She was seven.
Her name was Sophie Cole.
Dr. Adrian Cole’s daughter.
Her father had hidden her there after discovering Thomas planned to eliminate everyone connected to the experiment.
Sophie handed Graham an envelope.
“My dad said only you could open it.”
Inside was a handwritten confession.
Cole admitted everything.
Thomas had created a secret medical division within Mercer Ridge years earlier. The hearing compound had originally been designed for military research involving temporary sensory disruption.
The project was terminated.
Thomas continued it privately.
Vanessa became his intermediary.
Marcus controlled the corporate side.
Cole handled the medical side.
And Graham became the test subject.
But the confession contained another revelation.
Vanessa had secretly reduced Graham’s doses.
She had been poisoning him.
Yet she had also been preventing Thomas from giving him enough to cause permanent neurological damage.
Nothing was simple anymore.
Graham returned Sophie to her aunt and contacted federal authorities through an attorney he trusted.
Then Vanessa called.
“Meet me alone.”
“Where?”
“The old conservatory.”
“Evelyn?”
“Alive.”
Graham arrived twenty minutes later.
Vanessa stood among dead winter roses.
No diamonds.
No engagement gown.
Just a coat and a frightened face.
“Did you ever love me?” Graham asked.
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“Wrong answer.”
“It’s the truth.”
She admitted Thomas had recruited her three years earlier.
Her father’s company had collapsed because of a Mercer acquisition. Thomas offered money and revenge.
She was supposed to make Graham dependent on her.
Then marry him.
Then help declare him medically incapable.
“But I changed the doses.”
“You want credit for poisoning me less?”
“No.”
She looked ashamed.
“I want you to understand why Thomas is afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Lily.”
Graham frowned.
Vanessa explained.
Lily had accidentally seen Marcus enter Evelyn’s room months earlier.
She had also seen him open a hidden compartment.
Because everyone assumed the deaf child could neither hear nor understand, they spoke freely around her.
But Lily watched.
Remembered.
And told Nora.
“What compartment?”
Vanessa looked toward Graham’s estate.
“Behind Evelyn’s portrait.”
Graham turned.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Thomas knows.”
“Where is Evelyn?”
“I don’t know anymore.”
“Then you’re useless.”
“That’s what he’ll think too.”
A gunshot shattered the conservatory glass.
Vanessa fell.
Graham dragged her behind a stone planter.
Blood spread across her shoulder.
A second shot struck the wall.
Graham called emergency services.
The shooter disappeared.
Vanessa gripped his sleeve.
“Portrait.”
Then she lost consciousness.
At the mansion, Graham pulled Evelyn’s portrait from the wall.
Behind it was a steel compartment.
Lily’s handprint opened the biometric lock.
Graham stared.
“How?”
Nora began crying.
“Evelyn programmed it.”
Inside was a folder.
LILY BENNETT.
Graham opened it.
There were photographs of Lily from birth.
Medical records.
Trust documents.
And a DNA report.
Graham read the first page.
Then again.
Nora stepped closer.
“What does it say?”
Graham could barely speak.
The report identified Lily’s biological grandfather.
Thomas Mercer.
Nora shook her head.
“No.”
Graham looked at her.
“Nora... who was Lily’s father?”
She backed away.
“He died before she was born.”
“What was his name?”
“Daniel Bennett.”
Graham turned the page.
Daniel Bennett was not his real name.
The birth certificate beneath it showed another.
Alexander Mercer.
Graham’s older brother.
A brother Graham had never known existed.
Which meant Lily was not merely the maid’s daughter.
She was Thomas Mercer’s granddaughter.
And Graham’s niece.
Then Lily pointed to another document.
A trust.
If Graham became medically incapacitated, control did not automatically pass to Thomas.
It passed to the oldest living descendant of Thomas Mercer’s eldest child.
Lily.
Graham finally understood why Thomas wanted the child gone.
His phone vibrated.
A photograph arrived.
Thomas stood beside Evelyn.
Behind them was a clock.
11:58.
The message contained six words.
BRING LILY OR YOUR GRANDMOTHER DIES.
May you like
The clock changed to 11:59.
And someone knocked on the bedroom door.
