Chapter 12 - The Man Behind Vanessa

Daniel raised both hands.
“I’m not here to hurt anyone.”
Graham stared at the gun.
“Interesting way to show it.”
Daniel placed it on the floor.
Thomas had escaped federal transport.
A guard had been bribed.
Daniel found the abandoned vehicle and recovered the gun.
“Where is he?”
“I think he’s coming here.”
Thomas arrived ten minutes later.
Not secretly.
Not armed.
Bleeding.
He collapsed outside.
Graham could have left him there.
He didn’t.
Rebecca treated the wound.
Thomas regained consciousness and looked at his family gathered around him.
His mother.
His wife.
His son.
His granddaughter.
A family he had destroyed.
“Marcus wasn’t the last one,” he whispered.
“Who?”
Thomas looked at Rebecca.
“Tell him.”
Rebecca finally did.
The research had been financed decades earlier by a private medical conglomerate.
They wanted the data back.
Marcus had worked for them.
So had several Mercer Ridge executives.
Thomas had believed he could control them.
He had been wrong.
The conspiracy was larger than one family.
But the evidence Graham recovered was enough to expose it.
Federal investigators moved quickly.
Arrests followed.
Executives resigned.
The board suspended operations in three divisions.
News organizations descended on Mercer Ridge.
Graham publicly admitted the company had been used for illegal research without hiding behind corporate language.
He released the evidence.
He cooperated fully.
Mercer Ridge’s value collapsed.
He lost billions.
He did not care.
Lily asked him one evening:
“Are you sad?”
“About money?”
She nodded.
Graham signed:
“No.”
Then:
“I almost lost something more important.”
Lily smiled.
The peace lasted two days.
Then Thomas disappeared from the hospital.
A letter remained.
Graham expected another threat.
Instead:
I’m going to end what I started.
Attached was the address of the conglomerate’s hidden laboratory.
Thomas intended to destroy it.
Graham knew his father well enough to understand what that meant.
He would probably die doing it.
Evelyn said, “Let him.”
Rebecca said nothing.
Graham looked at Lily.
Family was not the same as forgiveness.
Saving someone was not absolving them.
He went.
At the laboratory, he found Thomas planting incendiary devices.
“Stop.”
Thomas turned.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
“You don’t get to choose the ending.”
Thomas laughed bitterly.
“You always were your mother’s son.”
Federal agents surrounded the facility.
Thomas lowered the detonator.
For once, he surrendered.
As agents took him away, he looked at Graham.
“I’m sorry.”
Graham did not say he forgave him.
He simply answered:
“I know.”
Then an agent emerged carrying a sealed evidence box.
Inside were hundreds of patient files.
The first was Graham’s.
The second was Alexander’s.
The third belonged to Lily.
But Lily had never been given the compound.
Graham opened the file.
At the top was a date.
Tomorrow.
Beneath it:
SUBJECT TRANSFER AUTHORIZED.

Someone was still planning to take Lily.
And the authorization carried Graham Mercer’s signature.
