Chapter 13 - The Dinner Trap

The signature was perfect.

Too perfect.

Graham realized someone had access to his biometric signing system.

Only three people did.

Graham.

Marcus.

And Daniel.

Daniel denied it.

Graham wanted to believe him.

Instead he investigated.

Security logs showed Daniel accessing the system repeatedly.

When confronted, Daniel finally confessed.

He had been working with federal investigators for months.

The signatures were part of an undercover operation designed to track the medical network.

But he had not authorized Lily’s transfer.

Someone had stolen his credentials.

The transfer location was scheduled for the following evening.

Graham decided to let it proceed.

Not Lily.

A decoy.

The operation led investigators to a private airfield.

There they arrested the remaining members of the network.

The final person to arrive surprised everyone.

Dr. Cole.

He had escaped supervision.

But he was not there to help the network.

He carried their financial archive.

“I’m done running,” he said.

Cole surrendered.

For the first time, Graham believed the danger might actually be ending.

Vanessa pleaded guilty to multiple charges and agreed to testify against Thomas, Marcus, and the medical network.

She asked Graham for one final meeting.

They sat across from each other in a secure interview room.

No champagne.

No diamonds.

No engagement ring.

“I loved you,” she said.

Graham believed her.

That was the tragedy.

“You also poisoned me.”

“I know.”

“I can understand why you were afraid. I can understand how Thomas controlled you. But understanding isn’t the same as erasing what you did.”

Vanessa cried.

Graham did not.

He removed the engagement ring from his pocket.

Set it on the table.

Then left.

Outside, Nora waited with Lily.

Lily looked at him.

“Finished?”

Graham signed yes.

She took his hand.

That simple gesture felt more honest than every promise Vanessa had ever made.

That evening, they returned to the estate.

The enormous dining room was empty.

Lily climbed into the chair beside Graham.

Nora laughed.

“You have your own seat.”

Lily shook her head.

“This one.”

Graham smiled.

They ate grilled cheese sandwiches at a table designed for state dinners.

Halfway through, Graham realized he could hear the clock ticking.

He stopped eating.

Nora noticed.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

He listened.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

His hearing was returning.

Then the doorbell rang.

Daniel answered.

A courier delivered a package.

No return address.

Inside was Alexander’s missing journal.

Nora opened it with trembling hands.

The final pages described Lily’s birth.

Alexander had discovered something shortly before he died.

Something about Thomas.

Something about Graham.

Nora read silently.

Then looked up.

“Graham...”

“What?”

She turned the journal toward him.

Alexander had written:

GRAHAM IS NOT THOMAS’S BIOLOGICAL SON.

Graham stared.

Beneath that sentence was another name.

The name of his real father.

Before Graham could read it, Evelyn entered.

She saw the journal.

May you like

And whispered:

“You were never supposed to find that.”
