Chapter 7 - Evelyn’s Locked Room

Graham did not bring Lily.
He brought the police.
The address Thomas supplied was empty.
Evelyn was gone.
But the chair remained warm.
Thomas had anticipated him.
At the mansion, Graham moved Lily and Nora into a secured wing.
He told Lily the truth carefully.
“Your daddy was my brother.”
Lily stared at him.
Then signed:
“You are family?”
Graham swallowed.
“Yes.”
She considered that.
Then hugged him.
No boardroom victory had ever dismantled him so completely.
Nora watched with tears in her eyes.
Graham held Lily and realized Thomas had made one fatal mistake.
He saw Lily as an obstacle.
Graham saw her as family.
That changed the rules.
Evelyn’s documents revealed Alexander had discovered Thomas’s illegal research years earlier. Thomas forced him out of the family and erased him from public records.
Alexander changed his name.
Met Nora.
Had Lily.
Then died in what police called a highway accident.
Graham no longer believed it was an accident.
Neither did Nora.
The next morning, Vanessa survived surgery.
She requested Graham.
He visited under police supervision.
“I know where Evelyn is,” she whispered.
“Where?”
“Thomas has a private medical facility under Mercer Ridge.”
Graham stared.
“There is no facility.”
“There is.”
“Why tell me?”
“Because he ordered Alexander killed.”
Nora had been right.
Vanessa began crying.
“And now he wants Lily.”
She gave Graham an access code.
Then said something unexpected.
“Marcus is more dangerous than Thomas.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas wants the company.”
“And Marcus?”
Vanessa looked toward the door.
“He wants everyone who knows the truth dead.”
That night, Graham entered Mercer Ridge through an underground maintenance tunnel.
Nora refused to stay behind.
Lily remained with federal agents.
At the hidden medical facility, Graham found Evelyn.
Alive.
Weak.
Furious.
She slapped him.
“You took too long.”
Graham laughed for the first time in days.
Then hugged her.
Evelyn told him Thomas had survived the plane crash because there had never been one.
The aircraft was destroyed remotely after landing at a private strip.
His “death” freed him from regulatory scrutiny.
Evelyn discovered the truth two years later.
Thomas had her declared mentally incompetent and hidden away.
“Why me?” Graham asked.
“Because you controlled the voting shares.”
“Why damage my hearing?”
“Because your grandmother was deaf.”
Graham understood.
Thomas could make the symptoms appear hereditary.
Natural.
Tragic.
Believable.
Evelyn touched his face.
“You were never weak, Graham.”
“I know.”
“No. You don’t.”
She signed the next words.
“Listening is not the same as hearing.”
Graham smiled faintly.
Then the facility alarm sounded.
Nora ran into the room.
“We have to go.”
A monitor activated.
Marcus appeared.
“Hello, Graham.”
Behind him was Lily.
Graham’s heart stopped.
The federal safe house had been breached.
Lily was seated in a chair.
Unhurt.
Terrified.
Marcus smiled.
“Your father thinks this is about inheritance.”
He leaned closer to the camera.
“He’s wrong.”
Then he placed a document in front of Lily.
A Mercer Ridge ownership transfer.
“Come upstairs and sign.”
Graham stared at him.
Marcus lifted a syringe.
“Or the little girl loses more than her hearing.”
The screen went black.
Evelyn grabbed Graham’s arm.
“Don’t go upstairs.”
“My niece is there.”
“That’s exactly why.”
She opened a hidden drawer.
Inside was a second ownership agreement.
Graham read the signature.
His own.
May you like
Except he had never signed it.
And it transferred Mercer Ridge to Marcus Vale.
