Chapter 9 - The Last Threat Against the Duca Estate

Six months had passed since the morning when a little girl stopped Alessandro Duca from drinking his coffee.

Six months since a hidden truth began to rise from the darkness.

Six months since the walls of the Duca estate stopped being just a fortress and became something closer to a home.

But Alessandro knew something most people forgot.

Peace was not the same as safety.

Sometimes peace was only the quiet moment before someone decided to strike again.

The morning began like any other.

Sunlight entered through the tall windows of the mansion.

The garden outside was covered with fresh flowers.

The staff moved through the halls without fear.

And in the kitchen, Emma Alvarez sat on the counter eating strawberries while explaining to three security guards why their serious faces were “boring.”

“You need to smile more,” she told them.

The guards looked at each other.

They had faced dangerous men.

They had protected Alessandro during attacks.

They had stood in front of weapons without hesitation.

But none of them knew how to respond to a three-year-old girl giving them life advice.

One of them finally smiled.

Emma pointed immediately.

“See? Better.”

Alessandro watched from the doorway.

A year ago, he would have considered this scene impossible.

His kitchen had been a place of strategy.

A place where business decisions were made.

A place where people lowered their voices.

Now it was filled with laughter.

And somehow, that was more powerful than anything he had built.

Emma noticed him.

“Mr. Duca.”

She held up a strawberry.

“You forgot breakfast.”

Alessandro walked closer.

“I didn’t forget.”

“You did.”

He looked at Sophia.

She smiled slightly.

“She’s right.”

Alessandro raised an eyebrow.

A feared man in the city being corrected by a child and a maid.

Something about that would have been unbelievable to anyone who knew him before.

But he no longer cared.

He sat beside Emma.

“Happy?”

She nodded.

“Very.”

“Why?”

Emma looked around the kitchen.

“Because everyone is here.”

The answer was simple.

But it stayed with him.

Everyone is here.

That was something Alessandro had never had.

People around him.

But not people with him.

Then his phone rang.

The moment changed.

Not completely.

But enough.

Alessandro looked at the screen.

Marco.

He answered.

“Yes.”

The security chief’s voice was different.

Serious.

“Boss.”

Alessandro stood.

“What happened?”

“We found something.”

“What?”

A pause.

“A message.”

Alessandro’s expression hardened.

“Where?”

“On the east gate camera.”

He walked away from the kitchen.

“What message?”

Marco lowered his voice.

“Someone left a photograph.”

Alessandro stopped.

“What photograph?”

“Daniel Alvarez.”

The air changed.

Even after everything was over.

Even after the truth had been revealed.

Daniel’s name still carried weight.

“What kind of photograph?”

Marco hesitated.

“One taken after his death.”

Silence.

Alessandro’s hand tightened around the phone.

“That’s impossible.”

“Yes.”

Marco paused.

“That’s why you need to see it.”

The security room was colder than usual.

Alessandro stood in front of the screen.

The photograph appeared.

It showed Daniel.

Alive.

Standing outside the Duca estate.

But the date on the image was impossible.

It was taken two weeks after the official report of his death.

Marco stood beside him.

“We verified the file.”

Alessandro stared at the image.

“Fake?”

“We thought so.”

“And?”

Marco shook his head.

“Not fake.”

The room went silent.

Alessandro studied the photograph.

Someone wanted him to believe Daniel had survived.

Someone wanted him to question everything.

That was the problem.

The enemy did not need to be right.

They only needed to create doubt.

“Where did it come from?”

“The east gate camera recorded a person leaving it.”

“Who?”

Marco hesitated.

Then showed the security footage.

A figure walking away from the mansion.

Wearing a dark coat.

Face hidden.

But one detail visible.

A silver ring.

Black stone.

The same ring from the old security footage.

The same ring connected to Victor.

But Victor was gone.

He had disappeared after helping expose Adrian Bell.

Alessandro watched the figure leave.

“This isn’t Victor.”

Marco looked surprised.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Alessandro pointed at the screen.

“Victor walks differently.”

Marco looked closer.

A pause.

“You’re right.”

Alessandro continued watching.

The person in the video wanted to look like Victor.

But they didn’t understand him.

They copied the appearance.

Not the person.

And that meant one thing.

Someone new was trying to continue the old plan.

Someone who knew the past.

Someone who wanted Alessandro to reopen wounds that had already healed.

That evening, Alessandro found Emma in the garden.

She was sitting beneath a tree drawing flowers.

He sat beside her.

She immediately looked at him.

“You’re thinking too much.”

He almost smiled.

“How do you know?”

“Your face does that.”

“My face does what?”

She made a serious expression.

“Like this.”

She copied his expression.

For a second, Alessandro forgot everything.

Then he laughed.

Quietly.

A real laugh.

Something he had almost forgotten how to do.

Emma smiled.

“You laughed.”

“Yes.”

“Again.”

“No.”

She laughed.

“You should.”

Alessandro looked at her.

“You know, most people are afraid to tell me what to do.”

Emma shrugged.

“I’m not.”

“I noticed.”

A comfortable silence followed.

Then Emma looked at him.

“Is someone bad again?”

The question was too mature for someone her age.

But Alessandro knew why she asked.

She had lived through fear.

She remembered more than children should.

“There may be someone who wants to hurt us.”

Emma became serious.

“Us?”

The word caught him.

Not you.

Not me.

Us.

Alessandro nodded.

“Yes.”

She thought for a moment.

Then reached out and held his hand.

A small hand.

Warm.

Trusting.

“We’ll be okay.”

He looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Because you protect people.”

The answer was unexpected.

Because years ago, Alessandro would have rejected that idea.

He protected territory.

Power.

Business.

Not people.

But Emma believed differently.

And somehow, that belief had changed him.

That night, the mansion went into full security mode.

No panic.

No chaos.

Just preparation.

Alessandro moved through the estate with calm precision.

The same calm he had before every dangerous moment.

But this time was different.

Because he was not protecting an empire.

He was protecting a family.

Sophia approached him.

“Mr. Duca.”

He turned.

“Alessandro.”

She smiled slightly.

The fact that she used his first name surprised him.

“Yes?”

“I know what you’re doing.”

“And?”

She looked toward Emma’s room.

“You’re scared.”

Alessandro said nothing.

Sophia continued.

“Not for yourself.”

That was true.

And he hated that she knew.

“You lost your husband because someone thought he didn’t matter.”

Her voice became softer.

“Don’t make the same mistake.”

Alessandro looked at her.

“What mistake?”

“Thinking protecting people means keeping them away.”

The words stayed with him.

Because she was right.

For years, Alessandro built walls around everything he cared about.

But walls could protect.

And walls could isolate.

Before he could answer, an alarm sounded.

Not loud.

Not dangerous.

A silent security alert.

Someone had entered the outer property.

Everyone moved instantly.

Alessandro reached the security room.

The camera showed the person standing outside the gate.

No weapon.

No disguise.

Just a person waiting.

The gate camera zoomed in.

Alessandro froze.

Because he recognized the face.

A face he had not seen in years.

A face from the past.

A face connected to Daniel.

Marco looked at him.

“Boss?”

Alessandro stared at the screen.

The person outside lifted their head toward the camera.

Then spoke through the intercom.

“I know who really killed Daniel Alvarez.”

Silence.

Alessandro stepped closer.

“Who are you?”

The person looked directly into the camera.

And answered:

“I’m the person Daniel trusted before he died.”

The screen remained frozen.

The mansion became silent.

Because after six months of peace…

May you like

The past had returned.

And this time, it was bringing the final truth with it.
