Chapter 5 - The Poisoned Cup and the Enemy’s Final Move

Victor Salvatore had always been the man who arrived before anyone asked.

That was what made him valuable.

That was what made him dangerous.

For more than twenty years, Victor had stood beside the Duca family.

When Alessandro’s father was alive, Victor was the trusted advisor who helped negotiate difficult deals.

When Alessandro took control of the empire, Victor was the voice that reminded him to think before acting.

When enemies appeared, Victor was the man who always seemed to know what was coming.

He knew the business.

He knew the family.

He knew the estate.

And most importantly…

He knew Alessandro.

That was why the possibility felt impossible.

But Alessandro had learned something long ago.

The most painful betrayals were never committed by strangers.

They came from people who knew exactly where to place the knife.

The black SUV moved through the city streets under a gray afternoon sky.

Alessandro sat in the back seat, looking out the window.

He had not spoken for several minutes.

Marco sat across from him, reviewing information on his tablet.

“Victor’s phone has been turned off.”

Alessandro did not react.

“When?”

“Thirty minutes after we locked down the estate.”

That was all Alessandro needed to hear.

A normal person would have questions.

A normal person would ask why.

Alessandro already knew.

Guilty people did not always run.

Sometimes they waited.

Sometimes they destroyed evidence.

Sometimes they prepared a counterattack.

But Victor had done the one thing that confirmed Alessandro’s suspicion.

He disappeared.

“Where is he now?” Alessandro asked.

Marco looked at the screen.

“We’re tracking his financial activity.”

“And?”

“One transfer.”

Alessandro turned his attention.

“To where?”

Marco hesitated.

“A private account in another country.”

Silence.

Alessandro looked back outside.

The city continued moving.

People walked through streets.

Cars stopped at traffic lights.

Restaurants opened.

Nobody knew that somewhere beneath the ordinary day, a war had already started.

“Find him.”

Marco nodded.

“We’re trying.”

Alessandro’s eyes hardened.

“No.”

Marco looked up.

“We’re not trying.”

A pause.

“We’re finding him.”

The words were calm.

But Marco understood.

There was a difference between searching and hunting.

And Alessandro Duca had stopped searching.

He was hunting.

Back at the estate, Emma sat beside Sophia in a quiet guest room.

The little girl was holding her stuffed rabbit while her mother brushed her hair.

Neither of them had spoken much.

Sophia was still trying to understand how a normal morning had become something so dangerous.

One moment, Emma was looking for breakfast.

The next, she had stopped a powerful man from drinking poisoned coffee.

Sophia looked at her daughter through the mirror.

“Emma.”

The girl looked up.

“Yes, Mama?”

“Why did you go into the kitchen?”

Emma thought for a moment.

“I smelled it.”

“The coffee?”

She nodded.

Sophia’s hands slowed.

“What did it smell like?”

Emma looked down.

“Like when Papa was sick.”

A painful silence followed.

Sophia closed her eyes.

She had spent months trying not to remember that night.

Daniel lying in bed.

His breathing becoming weaker.

His hand holding hers.

The fear in his eyes.

Not because he was dying.

Because he knew why.

Sophia had never believed the official explanation.

They told her Daniel had a medical problem.

They told her there was nothing anyone could have done.

But Daniel had looked at her that night and whispered something she never forgot.

Don’t trust the people who come pretending to help.

At the time, she thought it was the fear talking.

Now she wondered if it was a warning.

A knock came at the door.

Sophia immediately became alert.

A security officer stood outside.

“Mrs. Alvarez.”

“Yes?”

“Mr. Duca wants to speak with Emma.”

Sophia’s expression tightened.

“Why?”

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“Because we found something.”

Alessandro stood inside the old archive room beneath the mansion.

A place most employees did not even know existed.

Thousands of documents filled the shelves.

Old contracts.

Family records.

Business agreements.

Secrets.

Every powerful family had a place where they stored the things they wanted remembered.

And the things they wanted forgotten.

Victor had known this room.

That was the problem.

“He had access,” Marco said.

Alessandro looked at the files.

“Everyone has access.”

“No.”

Marco shook his head.

“Not everyone.”

He handed Alessandro a document.

A security report.

“Victor’s authorization code was used three months ago.”

Alessandro read it.

“Who opened the archive?”

Marco paused.

“That’s the problem.”

Alessandro looked at him.

“There is no name.”

Exactly.

Someone had deleted the record.

Not stolen.

Not changed.

Deleted.

Only someone with high-level access could do that.

Someone like Victor.

Alessandro placed the document down.

Then he saw something else.

A small mark on the paper.

A symbol.

A handwritten note.

His father’s old signature.

He recognized it immediately.

“My father’s.”

Marco looked surprised.

“Your father?”

Alessandro picked up the paper carefully.

The note was old.

Hidden between two documents.

Written years ago.

Only one sentence.

Trust no one who knows where you keep your secrets.

Alessandro stared at the words.

His father had written them before his death.

A warning.

But for whom?

Him?

Or Victor?

Before he could answer, the door opened.

Sophia entered with Emma.

Alessandro looked at the child.

“Emma.”

She walked closer.

“What did you find?”

The little girl looked at the old papers.

Then she suddenly stopped.

Her eyes moved to one specific folder.

A faded brown folder sitting on the bottom shelf.

She pointed.

“That one.”

Everyone looked.

“How do you know?”

Emma touched her rabbit’s ear.

“Papa had one like that.”

Sophia froze.

“Emma.”

The girl continued.

“He told me the brown folder was important.”

Alessandro immediately walked to the shelf.

He pulled the folder out.

Inside were documents.

Financial records.

Names.

Numbers.

And one photograph.

A photograph of several people standing inside the Duca estate years ago.

Alessandro looked carefully.

His father.

Victor.

Daniel.

And another person.

Someone he did not expect.

Someone who had been near him every day.

Alessandro’s expression changed.

Marco noticed.

“Who is it?”

Alessandro slowly turned the photograph.

“It’s impossible.”

But it wasn’t.

Because the person in the picture was not a stranger.

It was someone currently working inside the estate.

Someone who had access.

Someone who had been there the entire time.

The door suddenly opened.

A guard rushed inside.

“Mr. Duca.”

Alessandro looked up.

“What happened?”

The guard looked nervous.

“We found Victor’s car.”

“Where?”

“Near the old warehouse.”

“And Victor?”

The guard hesitated.

“He’s gone.”

Alessandro’s face remained emotionless.

“But?”

The guard swallowed.

“There was blood inside.”

Sophia held Emma closer.

Marco looked at Alessandro.

“Do you think he’s dead?”

Alessandro looked at the photograph in his hand.

At the faces.

At the secrets.

At the people who had been hiding the truth for years.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“Victor didn’t disappear.”

He looked toward the mansion windows.

“He wants us to think he did.”

Then Alessandro noticed something else.

A small piece of paper inside the folder.

Hidden behind the photograph.

He opened it.

Three words.

Written in fresh ink.

She knows everything.

Alessandro’s eyes moved slowly toward Emma.

The child.

The witness.

The person everyone underestimated.

And suddenly he understood the real plan.

The coffee was never meant to be the final attack.

It was a test.

Someone wanted to know whether Emma would speak.

Someone wanted to know whether Alessandro would believe her.

Someone was watching.

Waiting.

And now that Alessandro knew the truth was close…

May you like

The enemy would stop hiding.

They would come for the little girl who remembered everything.
