Chapter 7 - The Little Protector Who Changed a Mafia King’s Heart

The first thing Alessandro Duca did after leaving the underground room was not search for Victor.

It was not order revenge.

It was not gather his men and prepare for war.

It was something nobody expected from him.

He went to find Emma.

The security team had moved Sophia and her daughter to the safest part of the mansion, a private guest area usually reserved for important family members.

When Alessandro entered the room, he stopped at the doorway.

Emma was sitting on the floor.

A small collection of colored pencils surrounded her.

For the first time since the morning began, she looked like an ordinary child.

Not a witness.

Not a target.

Not the person holding a secret powerful men had killed for.

Just a little girl drawing pictures.

Sophia noticed Alessandro first.

She immediately stood.

“Mr. Duca.”

Alessandro raised a hand.

“Stay.”

His voice was softer than usual.

Sophia looked surprised.

She had spent the entire day seeing Alessandro as the dangerous man everyone feared.

But now she saw something different.

A man who looked tired.

A man carrying the weight of too many secrets.

Emma looked up.

“Did you find the bad person?”

The question was simple.

But Alessandro felt the difficulty of answering.

He walked into the room and sat down on the chair across from her.

“We found some answers.”

Emma studied his face.

“But not all?”

“No.”

She nodded like she understood.

Children often understood more than adults expected.

“Papa said answers are hard to find.”

Alessandro looked at her.

“Your father was wise.”

Emma smiled slightly.

“He was funny too.”

The small smile disappeared quickly.

“He made funny faces when Mama was sad.”

Sophia turned away.

She tried to hide her emotion.

Alessandro noticed.

He noticed because he understood loss.

People thought powerful men did not grieve.

They were wrong.

Power did not remove pain.

It only taught people how to hide it.

“What kind of person was your father?” Alessandro asked.

Emma looked at her drawing.

“He fixed things.”

“Like machines?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed at the picture.

“He fixed people.”

Alessandro said nothing.

Because somehow, that answer explained everything.

Daniel Alvarez had been a maintenance worker.

A man nobody important noticed.

A man who walked through the estate every day repairing things that broke.

But while powerful people focused on money and influence, Daniel had noticed something broken inside the house.

And he had tried to fix it.

That had cost him his life.

A phone vibrated.

Alessandro looked down.

Marco.

He answered.

“What?”

The security chief’s voice was tense.

“Boss, we found Victor.”

Alessandro stood immediately.

“Where?”

“An abandoned warehouse near the southern docks.”

“Alive?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

Alessandro’s expression hardened.

“Then why does your voice sound like a problem?”

“Because he wasn’t alone.”

The room became silent.

“Who was with him?”

Marco hesitated.

“Someone from the estate.”

Alessandro looked toward Sophia and Emma.

“Who?”

Marco lowered his voice.

“The person from the photograph.”

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.

“Lucia?”

“No.”

A pause.

“Danny Russo.”

The name surprised him.

The young cook.

The man who claimed he didn’t poison the coffee.

The man who knew Daniel.

The man who was afraid.

Alessandro felt the pieces moving.

Not randomly.

Someone had arranged them.

“Keep them there.”

“Yes.”

“I’m coming.”

The warehouse stood near the edge of the city.

Old.

Abandoned.

Forgotten.

The perfect place for people who wanted privacy.

Alessandro arrived with his security team.

He entered without hesitation.

Inside, Victor Salvatore sat tied to a chair.

His expensive suit was dirty.

His face carried exhaustion.

But he was alive.

Standing nearby was Danny.

The young cook looked completely different from the nervous employee in the kitchen.

Not dangerous.

But determined.

When Alessandro entered, both men looked at him.

Victor smiled.

A small, tired smile.

“Alessandro.”

Hearing his name from Victor felt strange.

For years, it had sounded familiar.

Comfortable.

Now it sounded like a memory from another life.

“You have a lot to explain.”

Victor looked away.

“I know.”

Alessandro walked closer.

“Start.”

Victor looked at Danny.

Then back at him.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen this way.”

Alessandro’s expression remained cold.

“What wasn’t?”

“Daniel.”

Silence.

Victor lowered his head.

“I tried to stop it.”

Alessandro’s eyes sharpened.

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Daniel was in danger.”

“Yes.”

“And you did nothing.”

Victor looked up.

“I tried.”

The answer came with pain.

Not an excuse.

Pain.

Alessandro noticed.

“Explain.”

Victor took a slow breath.

“Daniel discovered someone was moving money through your father’s old accounts.”

Alessandro said nothing.

“Your father suspected it too.”

“Then why didn’t he act?”

“Because he was trying to find everyone involved.”

Victor looked down.

“He trusted the wrong people.”

“Who?”

Victor’s eyes moved toward Danny.

The cook stepped forward.

“The person who killed Daniel wasn’t Victor.”

Alessandro looked at him.

“Then who?”

Danny’s face tightened.

“The person who ordered everything.”

A pause.

“The person who knew Daniel was close to finding the truth.”

Alessandro waited.

Danny swallowed.

“It was your father’s former financial advisor.”

Marco checked his notes.

“Adrian Bell?”

Victor nodded.

“Yes.”

The name meant something.

Adrian Bell had disappeared years ago after Alessandro’s father’s death.

Everyone assumed he left the country.

But apparently…

He had never really left.

Alessandro looked at Victor.

“Why frame you?”

Victor gave a bitter smile.

“Because I was the easiest person to blame.”

“And Danny?”

Danny looked down.

“He forced me to help.”

Alessandro turned.

Danny continued quickly.

“I was Daniel’s friend. Adrian knew that. He threatened my family.”

“Your family?”

“My younger sister.”

His voice broke slightly.

“He said if I didn’t follow orders, she would disappear.”

The anger in Alessandro’s eyes grew.

Not because someone had attacked him.

Because someone had used innocent people.

Emma.

Daniel.

Danny’s sister.

Everyone who had been powerless against a man hiding behind money.

“What did Adrian want?”

Victor answered.

“Control.”

A pause.

“He believed Alessandro was too loyal to the old ways. Too protective of employees. Too unwilling to become ruthless enough.”

Alessandro almost laughed.

Almost.

A man had tried to kill him because he thought kindness was weakness.

“Where is Adrian now?”

Nobody answered.

That silence was enough.

“He escaped.”

Alessandro looked at Victor.

“When?”

“This morning.”

The same morning.

The coffee.

The warning.

The message.

Everything had been a final move.

Adrian knew the truth was coming.

So he tried to remove the only person who could stop him.

Alessandro.

But he failed.

Because a little girl saw the danger first.

A little girl who had no reason to trust him.

No reason to save him.

Yet she did.

That night, Alessandro returned to the estate.

The mansion was quiet.

Too quiet.

He found Emma asleep in the guest room.

Her stuffed rabbit rested beside her.

A drawing was lying on the table.

Alessandro picked it up.

It was a picture of several people standing together.

Sophia.

Emma.

Daniel.

And Alessandro.

He stared at the drawing.

“Why am I here?”

Emma’s sleepy voice answered from the bed.

“Because you were lonely.”

Alessandro looked at her.

“I’m not lonely.”

Emma opened one eye.

“Everyone is sometimes.”

The answer was so simple.

So honest.

That it left him with nothing to say.

After a moment, Alessandro placed the drawing back down.

“You should sleep.”

Emma closed her eyes.

“Mr. Duca?”

“Yes?”

“Are you still scared?”

The question surprised him.

A man like Alessandro was never supposed to admit fear.

But he was tired of pretending.

“Yes.”

Emma opened her eyes.

“Of what?”

He looked at the sleeping mansion.

The enemies.

The betrayal.

The secrets.

Then he answered honestly.

“Of losing people who don’t deserve to be hurt.”

Emma smiled faintly.

“Papa said good people worry about that.”

Alessandro stood there silently.

Because nobody had called him good in a very long time.

Maybe because he never believed he was.

But tonight, standing in a quiet room with a child who had saved his life…

He wondered if people could change.

If a man who had spent years building walls could finally learn how to protect something other than power.

Outside the window, the city lights continued shining.

Somewhere out there, Adrian Bell was still running.

The danger was not over.

The war had not ended.

But something inside Alessandro had changed.

For years, he had protected his empire.

Now he had something more important.

May you like

A little girl who believed he could still be better.

And he would make sure nobody ever took that away from her.
