Chapter 3 - The Maid’s Daughter and the Memory of a Lost Father

The room became silent after Emma pointed at Danny Russo.
“You were there.”
Four words.
A child’s voice.
But they carried the weight of a hidden secret.
Danny stood frozen near the office door.
The young cook who had spent the last three weeks preparing meals inside the Duca estate suddenly looked like a man who had forgotten how to breathe.
Alessandro noticed.
He noticed everything.
A guilty man usually reacted with anger.
A liar usually reacted with excuses.
But Danny’s first reaction was different.
Fear.
Not fear of being caught.
Fear of something returning.
Alessandro leaned forward slightly.
“Danny.”
The cook swallowed.
“Yes, Mr. Duca.”
“Do you know this child?”
Danny looked at Emma.
For a moment, his eyes softened.
Not with recognition.
With sadness.
Then he quickly looked away.
That small movement was enough.
Alessandro had spent his entire life studying people.
The smallest hesitation.
The shortest glance.
The tiniest change in breathing.
Those details were often more honest than words.
“You know her,” Alessandro said.
Danny shook his head immediately.
“No, sir.”
The answer came too quickly.
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.
“Interesting.”
Danny looked confused.
“What?”
“You answered before I finished asking.”
The cook said nothing.
Behind Alessandro, Marco Bellini watched carefully.
He knew that tone.
The investigation had already begun.
Alessandro was no longer searching for answers.
He was searching for the lie.
Emma sat quietly on the chair, watching the adults.
She didn’t understand the danger in the room.
She only understood that everyone looked nervous.
Especially Danny.
Alessandro turned toward her.
“Emma.”
The little girl looked up.
“Can you tell me why you think he was there?”
Emma looked at Danny.
Then she looked down at her rabbit.
Her fingers rubbed the damaged ear slowly.
A small habit.
Something she did when remembering something painful.
“Because he gave Papa water.”
The words hit the room immediately.
Danny’s face changed.
Sophia stepped forward.
“Emma…”
But the child continued.
“He came to our house.”
Alessandro looked at Danny.
“When?”
Danny remained silent.
“When did you visit Daniel Alvarez?”
The cook’s jaw tightened.
“I didn’t.”
Emma looked confused.
“But you did.”
The innocence of her voice made the denial sound weaker.
Alessandro walked slowly around the desk.
“Danny.”
The cook looked at him.
“Your background check says you grew up in the northern district.”
Danny nodded carefully.
“Yes.”
“Your previous job was in a restaurant.”
“Yes.”
“But before that?”
Danny said nothing.
Alessandro stopped.
“Before that, you worked maintenance.”
The room became still.
Sophia looked at Danny.
“What?”
Danny closed his eyes for a second.
A mistake.
A small one.
But Alessandro saw it.
“You knew Daniel because you worked with him.”
Danny looked away.
“I knew him.”
The answer finally came.
Sophia looked shocked.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Danny’s face tightened.
“Because I didn’t want to bring trouble back.”
“Trouble?”
Sophia’s voice broke.
“My husband died.”
Danny looked at her.
“I know.”
“Then why did you say nothing?”
The cook had no answer.
Alessandro watched them both.
There was pain here.
Real pain.
But pain did not mean innocence.
He had learned that lesson many years ago.
Some of the most dangerous people in the world carried real scars.
“Tell me what happened that night,” Alessandro said.
Danny looked at him.
“I can’t.”
The answer changed the atmosphere.
Not “I don’t know.”
Not “I wasn’t there.”
“I can’t.”
Alessandro stepped closer.
“Everyone in this house keeps saying they can’t talk.”
His voice remained calm.
“But people usually say that when they are protecting someone.”
Danny looked down.
“Or protecting themselves.”
No one spoke.
Emma watched Alessandro carefully.
She seemed to understand something even adults missed.
The truth was close.
But everyone was afraid of touching it.
Alessandro returned to his desk.
“Marco.”
“Yes?”
“Find everything about Daniel Alvarez.”
Marco nodded.
“Already started.”
“Not just his employment records.”
Alessandro looked at Danny.
“Everything.”
The security chief understood.
Family.
Friends.
Medical records.
Financial history.
Every hidden piece.
Before Marco could leave, Danny spoke.
“Mr. Duca.”
Everyone turned.
The cook looked exhausted.
“I didn’t poison your coffee.”
Alessandro studied him.
“Then tell me who did.”
Danny hesitated.
And that hesitation told Alessandro the answer was close.
“I don’t know.”
A pause.
“But I know who wanted your attention.”
Alessandro’s expression changed.
“Explain.”
Danny looked at Emma.
“The night Daniel died, he wasn’t sick.”
Sophia stopped breathing.
“What?”
Danny continued.
“He knew something.”
The room became colder.
“He told me he found something wrong inside the estate.”
Alessandro’s eyes sharpened.
“What did he find?”
Danny looked nervous.
“I don’t know.”
“That’s not the truth.”
Danny closed his eyes.
“He didn’t trust phones. He didn’t trust messages.”
“Why?”
“Because he thought someone was watching.”
The words settled heavily.
Someone watching.
Inside the estate.
Alessandro slowly looked around his office.
The walls.
The cameras.
The security systems.
The place he had always considered impossible to penetrate.
Suddenly, it felt different.
A prison built by someone else.
“What did Daniel do with the information?”
Danny looked at Emma.
The little girl was still holding her rabbit.
Then he said:
“He hid it.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.
“But someone found out.”
Danny nodded.
“That’s what scared him.”
Sophia stepped closer.
“My husband was killed because of this?”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone already knew.
Emma suddenly spoke.
“Papa said someone bad was in the house.”
Sophia covered her mouth.
“Emma…”
“No.”
The little girl looked at Alessandro.
“Papa told me if anything happened, I should remember.”
Alessandro lowered himself slightly.
“Remember what?”
Emma looked at the coffee cup on the desk.
Then at Danny.
Then at her mother.
“He said…”
Her voice became softer.
“Don’t trust the person who smiles the most.”
The sentence made everyone uncomfortable.
Because it wasn’t specific.
It could describe anyone.
A servant.
A friend.
An employee.
Someone close.
Someone trusted.
Alessandro stood slowly.
For years, people had tried to attack him from outside.
Rival organizations.
Enemies.
Competitors.
But he had never considered the possibility that the greatest danger was already eating breakfast under his roof.
A knock came at the door.
Another security officer entered.
“Mr. Duca.”
Alessandro looked at him.
“What?”
The officer placed a small evidence bag on the desk.
“We found something in the kitchen.”
Inside the clear bag was a small piece of paper.
Old.
Folded.
Hidden behind the coffee storage cabinet.
Alessandro opened it carefully.
Only one sentence was written.
Five words.
“The girl remembers everything.”
The room went silent.
Sophia immediately grabbed Emma’s hand.
Danny looked terrified.
And Alessandro stared at the message.
Because now he understood.
The poisoned coffee was not just an attempt to kill him.
It was a message.
Someone wanted him to know there was a secret.
Someone wanted him to discover the truth.
But the most dangerous question remained.
Why would the enemy need a three-year-old girl to reveal it?
Alessandro looked at Emma.
The child who had stopped his coffee.
The child who remembered the night everyone else wanted forgotten.
And for the first time in many years, Alessandro Duca felt something he rarely allowed himself to feel.
Concern.
Not for his own life.
For hers.
May you like
Because if someone had been willing to kill a man to hide the truth…
They would not hesitate to silence a child who carried it.
