Chapter 4 - The Traitor Behind the Mansion Walls

The message sat on Alessandro Duca’s desk like a silent threat.

The girl remembers everything.

Five simple words.

No signature.

No explanation.

No mistake.

Whoever left it there wanted him to find it.

That was what bothered Alessandro the most.

A person trying to hide a crime did not leave clues.

They destroyed evidence.

They erased witnesses.

They disappeared.

But this person had done the opposite.

They had placed a warning inside his own kitchen, waited until he discovered the poisoned coffee, and made sure Emma was standing there when the truth began to surface.

It was not an accident.

It was a performance.

And Alessandro hated being part of someone else’s plan.

The office remained silent.

Sophia held Emma’s hand tightly.

Danny stood near the door, his face pale.

Marco watched Alessandro carefully.

Everyone in the room understood one thing.

The rules had changed.

This was no longer about a poisoned cup of coffee.

It was about a secret buried inside the Duca estate.

A secret someone had killed to protect.

Alessandro picked up the evidence bag containing the note.

“Who found this?”

The security officer stepped forward.

“I did, sir. Behind the coffee storage cabinet. It was hidden between the wooden panels.”

“Hidden recently?”

“Yes.”

“How do you know?”

The officer hesitated.

“Because the dust around the panel was disturbed.”

Alessandro looked at Marco.

“Someone wanted it discovered.”

Marco nodded.

“That means the person who planted it knew Emma would warn you.”

The room became quiet.

Sophia looked down at her daughter.

The thought clearly frightened her.

Someone had counted on a child being brave enough to speak.

Someone had placed Emma directly in danger.

Alessandro noticed Sophia’s reaction.

“Mrs. Alvarez.”

She looked up.

“From this moment forward, your daughter stays under protection.”

Sophia froze.

“Mr. Duca, I don’t want her involved in this.”

“You think I do?”

His answer surprised her.

For a moment, Alessandro’s cold expression disappeared.

“I have enemies who would gladly hurt anyone connected to me.”

He looked at Emma.

“She was already involved the moment someone decided she knew too much.”

Sophia lowered her eyes.

She wanted to argue.

She wanted to take her daughter and leave.

But she knew the truth.

Running would not erase what Emma remembered.

And whoever had killed Daniel already knew about them.

Alessandro turned to Marco.

“Lock down the estate.”

Marco immediately understood.

“Everyone?”

“Everyone.”

The order was unusual.

The Duca estate had never been completely closed.

Not even during threats.

Because Alessandro trusted his security system.

He trusted his people.

But now the enemy was inside.

And trust had become a weakness.

Within minutes, the mansion changed.

Security doors activated.

Employees were instructed to remain in their assigned areas.

Every camera was reviewed.

Every entrance log was checked.

Every person who had entered the estate in the last month became a potential suspect.

Alessandro stood in the security room watching dozens of screens.

The mansion looked peaceful.

Too peaceful.

On one monitor, a housekeeper cleaned the second-floor hallway.

On another, a gardener trimmed roses outside.

In the kitchen, employees continued preparing lunch under supervision.

Everything looked normal.

That was the problem.

Danger rarely announced itself.

It wore familiar faces.

It served coffee.

It smiled.

“Run the kitchen footage again,” Alessandro said.

A security analyst moved immediately.

The recording appeared on the large screen.

The morning began.

The kitchen staff arrived.

Danny prepared the coffee.

Emma entered.

Alessandro stopped the video.

“Back.”

The footage reversed.

“Stop.”

The image froze.

A woman stood near the coffee supplies.

Alessandro leaned closer.

“Who is that?”

Marco checked the database.

“Lucia Moretti. Senior housekeeper. Worked here eleven years.”

Eleven years.

That number caught Alessandro’s attention.

“Bring her in.”

Ten minutes later, Lucia entered the security room.

She was a woman in her late fifties.

Gray hair.

Kind face.

The type of person most people would overlook.

That was exactly why Alessandro watched her carefully.

“Lucia.”

“Yes, Mr. Duca.”

“Do you know why you are here?”

She looked nervous.

“No.”

Alessandro pointed toward the screen.

“You were in the kitchen this morning.”

Lucia looked at the footage.

“Yes.”

“You touched the coffee supplies.”

Her face changed slightly.

“I only organized the cabinet.”

“Why?”

“Because they were messy.”

Alessandro studied her.

A normal answer.

A reasonable answer.

But he had learned that dangerous people often hid behind reasonable answers.

“What time did you enter the kitchen?”

“Six fifteen.”

“The camera shows six twelve.”

Lucia became quiet.

A small mistake.

Three minutes.

Most people would ignore it.

Alessandro did not.

“Why did you lie?”

“I didn’t mean to.”

“You answered incorrectly.”

Lucia looked uncomfortable.

“I was nervous.”

“Why?”

The woman looked down.

And that was when Alessandro saw it.

Not guilt.

Fear.

The same fear he had seen in Danny.

The same fear Sophia carried.

Someone was afraid.

But of what?

“You know something,” Alessandro said.

Lucia shook her head.

“No, sir.”

“Everyone who knows something says that.”

She remained silent.

Alessandro stepped closer.

“Eleven years.”

Lucia looked up.

“You have worked here eleven years.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Daniel Alvarez.”

The color left her face.

A reaction.

Small.

But real.

“I knew many employees.”

“Not what I asked.”

Lucia looked away.

Alessandro’s voice became quieter.

“You knew Daniel.”

The woman’s eyes filled slightly.

“Yes.”

The admission came slowly.

“I knew him.”

“What happened to him?”

Lucia looked toward the cameras.

Then toward the door.

As if checking whether someone was listening.

That told Alessandro everything.

She was not afraid of him.

She was afraid of someone else.

“Lucia.”

Her hands trembled.

“Daniel was a good man.”

“That does not answer my question.”

“No.”

She swallowed.

“But it explains why he died.”

The room went still.

Marco stepped forward.

“Explain.”

Lucia closed her eyes.

“Daniel discovered something.”

“What?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

Alessandro stared at her.

“You’re lying.”

Lucia looked at him.

“I know enough to understand why he was killed.”

“What did he discover?”

The woman hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“He found missing records.”

“Records of what?”

“Money.”

Alessandro’s expression changed.

“Inside my company?”

Lucia nodded.

“Someone was moving money through the estate.”

Marco immediately began typing on his tablet.

Alessandro continued.

“And Daniel found out.”

“Yes.”

“What did he do?”

“He told someone.”

“Who?”

Lucia looked terrified.

“He thought he could trust them.”

“And?”

The woman’s voice dropped.

“He was wrong.”

Silence.

Alessandro felt something cold settle inside him.

Daniel had not simply discovered a crime.

He had trusted the wrong person.

“Who did he tell?”

Lucia looked at him.

“I never knew.”

Another pause.

“But before he died, he told me something.”

Alessandro leaned forward.

“What?”

Lucia’s voice became barely audible.

“He said if anything happened to him…”

She stopped.

“Continue.”

“He said the truth would be hidden somewhere nobody would search.”

Alessandro immediately looked toward Emma.

The child.

The memory.

The warning.

But Lucia shook her head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“He didn’t hide the truth with Emma.”

“Then where?”

Lucia looked toward the kitchen.

“He hid it with the only person he believed would never betray him.”

Alessandro’s expression hardened.

“Who?”

Lucia did not answer immediately.

Then she said:

“Your father’s old friend.”

The room changed.

Because there was only one person she could mean.

A man who had been trusted by the Duca family for decades.

A man Alessandro had known since childhood.

A man who still had access to everything.

“Victor Salvatore,” Marco whispered.

Alessandro said nothing.

Because the name was impossible.

Victor Salvatore was not a stranger.

He was family.

Almost.

He had attended Alessandro’s father’s funeral.

He had helped build the empire.

He had been the man everyone trusted.

The man who always smiled.

The man who was always there.

Alessandro looked again at the message on his desk.

The girl remembers everything.

Then Emma’s words returned to him.

Papa said people tell the truth when they think nobody is watching.

And suddenly, Alessandro understood.

The person behind everything was not hiding in the shadows.

They had been standing in the light for years.

Smiling.

Helping.

Waiting.

Alessandro walked out of the security room without another word.

Marco followed.

“Boss.”

Alessandro stopped.

His face was calm.

Too calm.

“Find Victor Salvatore.”

Marco hesitated.

“Do you want him brought here?”

Alessandro looked back.

“No.”

A pause.

“Find out if he is already running.”

Because if Victor Salvatore was the person behind Daniel’s death…

Then the enemy inside the house had never been a servant.

It had been someone who knew exactly how Alessandro Duca thought.

Someone who knew every weakness.

May you like

Someone who had been waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

And now that moment had arrived.
