Chapter 9 - The Secret Robert Langley Buried

The name appeared on the screen.

ROBERT LANGLEY.

Nobody moved.

Not Victor.

Not Alessandro.

Not even Robert himself.

The old adviser stood frozen beside the wooden table, staring at the computer as if he had just seen a ghost.

A ghost from a past he had spent years trying to bury.

Alessandro slowly turned toward him.

The room was filled with tension.

A few minutes earlier, Alessandro believed the final enemy had revealed himself.

Victor Hale.

The man who created the hidden network.

The man who manipulated people from the shadows.

The man who believed he deserved the Duca empire.

But now...

The truth was changing again.

Because Elena had not hidden a file about Victor.

She had hidden a file about Robert.

The man Alessandro trusted most.

The man who claimed he was protecting him.

The man who said he was only trying to save the family.

Alessandro looked at the screen.

"What is this?"

Robert did not answer.

That was the answer.

Victor noticed it too.

For the first time, the confident expression disappeared from his face.

"You didn't know."

Robert looked at him.

"Stop."

Victor smiled slightly.

A cold, knowing smile.

"You actually didn't know."

Alessandro looked between them.

"What are you talking about?"

Robert stepped toward the computer.

"Alessandro, don't open that file."

The warning was immediate.

Almost desperate.

And that alone confirmed everything.

Because Robert Langley had never begged.

Not once.

Not when negotiations failed.

Not when enemies threatened him.

Not when his life was in danger.

But now he was asking Alessandro not to see something.

The one thing Robert had spent years protecting.

Alessandro walked closer to the computer.

"No."

Robert stopped.

"Alessandro."

"No more secrets."

His voice echoed through the old foundation house.

"For years, everyone has decided what I should know."

He looked at Victor.

"My father."

Then Robert.

"You."

Then Sofia.

"Even Elena tried to protect me."

He looked back at the screen.

"But I am done being protected from the truth."

His finger pressed the file.

The computer loaded.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then a video appeared.

A timestamp.

Fourteen years earlier.

The room became silent.

Elena Vale appeared on the screen.

But this time, she looked different.

Not afraid.

Not desperate.

Determined.

She sat at a desk surrounded by documents.

Behind her was the same symbol.

The silver wolf.

Alessandro stepped closer.

Sofia watched carefully.

"My mother."

Elena looked into the camera.

"If you are watching this, then the second layer has been opened."

She paused.

"That means Alessandro finally knows enough to understand."

The words struck him.

Not because she said his name.

Because she sounded like she expected him to be there.

Like she knew this moment would happen.

Elena continued.

"I need to explain something about Robert."

Everyone looked at him.

Robert lowered his eyes.

"He was not the beginning."

A pause.

"But he was the first person who knew."

Alessandro looked at Robert.

The older man closed his eyes.

Elena continued.

"When I discovered the hidden network inside the Duca organization, I believed Victor Hale was responsible."

The video showed documents.

Financial records.

Encrypted messages.

Names.

"But I was wrong."

Alessandro's breathing slowed.

The truth was coming.

And somehow he knew he would hate it.

"Victor built the system."

Elena said.

"But Robert helped him hide it."

Silence.

Sofia looked at Robert.

Even she seemed shocked.

Alessandro did not speak.

Robert finally whispered:

"Elena..."

The video continued.

"Robert believed he could control Victor."

Elena's expression became sad.

"He believed he could use Victor's network to protect Alessandro."

Alessandro looked at Robert.

The older man looked broken.

Not because he was exposed.

Because Elena had understood him.

"He was not loyal to Victor."

Elena continued.

"He was loyal to Alessandro."

Robert looked up.

Everyone was silent.

"But loyalty without honesty becomes another form of betrayal."

The sentence destroyed the last defense Robert had.

Because it was true.

Alessandro felt anger.

But also something else.

Pain.

Because part of him wanted to hate Robert completely.

It would have been easier.

But the truth was more complicated.

Robert had betrayed him.

And he had protected him.

Both things were true.

Elena continued.

"The reason I disappeared was because I found out Robert had created a backup plan."

A new document appeared.

A file labeled:

DUCA SUCCESSION PROTOCOL.

Alessandro frowned.

"What is that?"

Robert looked away.

Victor smiled.

"Now you understand."

Alessandro turned toward him.

"You knew."

Victor nodded.

"Of course."

He stepped closer.

"Robert was always afraid you would become like your father."

Alessandro's expression hardened.

Victor continued.

"He believed you were too emotional."

Too trusting.

Too attached to family.

Robert closed his eyes.

Because those words were true.

Alessandro looked at him.

"Is that what you thought?"

Robert did not answer.

"Answer me."

The older man finally spoke.

"I thought your kindness would get you killed."

Alessandro stared.

Robert continued.

"Your father was powerful because he trusted nobody."

"No."

Alessandro shook his head.

"My father was powerful because people trusted him."

Robert looked at him.

And for the first time, Alessandro saw regret in his eyes.

Real regret.

Elena's video continued.

"The succession protocol was created to transfer control of the Duca empire if Alessandro was considered incapable."

Alessandro froze.

Transfer control.

To whom?

The answer was obvious.

Robert.

The man who guided him.

The man who advised him.

The man who would have become the invisible ruler behind the family.

Robert had not wanted to destroy the Duca empire.

He wanted to control it.

Even if he believed it was for the right reasons.

The video continued.

"But Robert changed the protocol."

Elena looked directly into the camera.

"He added one condition."

A new document appeared.

AUTHORIZED SUCCESSOR: ROBERT LANGLEY.

The room became silent.

Alessandro looked at Robert.

"You prepared to take everything."

Robert shook his head.

"No."

"Then what is this?"

"I never activated it."

"But you created it."

Robert had no answer.

Because he had.

And that was enough.

Suddenly, one of Victor's men moved.

A gun lifted.

But before anyone reacted, Robert moved.

He stepped in front of Alessandro.

The gun fired.

The sound exploded through the room.

Robert fell.

For a moment, nobody moved.

"Robert!"

Alessandro caught him before he hit the ground.

Blood spread across his shirt.

The man who had betrayed him.

The man who had protected him.

The man who had been both enemy and family.

Sofia covered her mouth.

Victor looked annoyed.

Not surprised.

Annoyed.

"Still protecting him."

Alessandro looked up.

His expression had completely changed.

The hesitation was gone.

The confusion was gone.

Only determination remained.

Victor finally understood.

He had made the same mistake everyone else had made.

They underestimated Alessandro because they saw his compassion as weakness.

They were wrong.

Compassion was not weakness.

It was the reason he fought harder.

Alessandro helped Robert sit against the wall.

Then he stood.

Slowly.

Calmly.

Dangerously.

"You wanted to know what kind of man I would become."

He looked at Victor.

"Now you know."

Victor smiled.

"You think this changes anything?"

Alessandro looked at Sofia.

Then at the computer.

Then back at Victor.

"No."

A pause.

"It ends everything."

The final file on the computer opened.

Elena's last message appeared.

ONE MORE SECRET REMAINS.

Alessandro stared.

Because even after everything...

There was still something his mother had hidden.

And this time, he knew exactly why.

Not to protect him.

But to prepare him.

The final truth was waiting.

May you like

And when Alessandro discovered it...

The entire Duca empire would finally learn who had truly been controlling the shadows.
