Chapter 2 - The Secret Hidden Inside the System

For the first time in many years, Alessandro Duca did not know what to say.

That frightened him more than any enemy ever had.

Silence was something Alessandro controlled. In negotiations, he used it as a weapon. In confrontations, he allowed other people to fill the empty space with nervous explanations and desperate excuses.

But now the silence belonged to a six-year-old girl sitting in his chair.

A child who had walked into the most protected room in his entire empire.

A child who had discovered a flaw in his security system that dozens of professionals had failed to find.

And a child who was wearing a pendant connected to a past Alessandro had buried so deeply that he almost convinced himself it never existed.

The silver wolf pendant reflected the green light from the computer screen.

A simple object.

A small piece of metal.

Yet it carried the weight of a memory Alessandro had spent years trying not to revisit.

He remembered that symbol.

Not from a photograph.

Not from a file.

From a person.

Someone who once stood beside his family.

Someone who vanished before anyone could understand why.

Alessandro stared at the girl.

"What is your name?"

The child hesitated.

For the first time, her confidence seemed to weaken.

"My name is Sofia."

Her voice was quiet.

Not afraid.

Careful.

Like someone who had learned that words could be dangerous.

Alessandro studied her face.

"Sofia what?"

The girl looked down at the pendant.

"Sofia Vale."

The name meant nothing.

And yet something about it felt familiar.

Alessandro turned his attention back to the computer screen.

The hidden connection was still there.

Pulsing.

Waiting.

The betrayal was not imaginary.

Someone had built a secret pathway inside his network.

Someone had been watching.

Listening.

Collecting information.

For how long?

Days?

Months?

Years?

The thought made his jaw tighten.

He had built his empire around one principle.

Trust was expensive.

And betrayal was paid for with everything.

He slowly walked toward the desk.

"Sofia."

The girl looked up.

"How did you enter this room?"

No answer.

Alessandro's eyes sharpened.

"Nobody enters this room."

"I know."

"You know?"

She nodded.

"I watched."

The answer unsettled him.

"Watched what?"

"The guards."

She pointed toward the ceiling camera.

"Your cameras."

Then toward the door.

"The locks."

Then back to the computer.

"The system."

Alessandro looked at her carefully.

"You studied my security?"

Sofia nodded.

"For three days."

Three days.

The words echoed in his mind.

A child had been inside his mansion for three days?

Impossible.

His security team would have noticed.

Unless...

Unless someone had allowed her to remain unseen.

Alessandro turned away from the computer and pressed a button on his watch.

A private communication channel opened.

"Marco."

A voice answered immediately.

"Boss."

"Come to the war room."

There was a pause.

A short one.

But Alessandro noticed.

Everyone around him knew the rules.

Nobody entered the underground level unless summoned.

"Right now?"

"Right now."

"Understood."

The call ended.

Sofia watched him.

"You shouldn't call him."

Alessandro stopped.

Slowly, he turned.

"Why?"

The girl looked at the door.

"Because if he knows I'm here, the person who put the program inside your system will know too."

A cold silence filled the room.

Alessandro stared at her.

"How do you know that?"

Sofia looked at the screen.

"Because they are connected."

She moved the mouse.

A second window opened.

A hidden communication record appeared.

Alessandro stepped closer.

His expression changed.

The data was not supposed to exist.

It showed a series of small transmissions.

Encrypted.

Carefully hidden.

Each one lasted only seconds.

Too short to trigger alarms.

Too small to attract attention.

But Sofia had found them.

"When did you find this?"

"Before you came in."

"Why?"

The girl looked confused by the question.

"Because I needed proof."

Alessandro studied her.

"Proof of what?"

Sofia looked at him.

"That my mother was telling the truth."

The room became still.

The rain above them seemed impossibly far away.

"Your mother."

Sofia nodded.

"She said someone close to you was hurting people."

Alessandro's expression hardened.

"Who?"

The girl looked at the screen.

"I don't know his name."

"Then how do you know?"

"Because my mother showed me."

She reached into her jacket pocket.

For a moment, Alessandro thought she was reaching for another object.

Instead, she pulled out a small old flash drive.

It looked damaged.

Used.

Protected by a cracked plastic case.

"My mother gave me this."

Alessandro did not take it immediately.

"What's inside?"

Sofia looked at the drive.

"Things she found."

"Like what?"

"Names."

That single word carried enough weight.

Alessandro knew exactly what names could do.

Names were power.

Names could destroy governments.

Names could collapse families.

Names could turn friends into enemies.

He reached for the drive.

But before his fingers touched it, the security system suddenly changed.

A small red light appeared on the computer.

Alessandro immediately reacted.

The room's atmosphere shifted.

"What did you do?"

Sofia looked at the screen.

"I didn't do anything."

The red light blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Then a message appeared.

ACCESS ATTEMPT DETECTED.

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

Someone was trying to enter the system.

From outside.

No.

Not outside.

Inside.

The hidden connection had activated.

Sofia whispered:

"They know."

Alessandro looked at her.

"Who?"

The girl slowly turned toward the door.

"The person who was listening."

For the first time that night, Alessandro felt something he rarely allowed himself to feel.

Concern.

Not for himself.

For her.

Because whoever had hidden inside his system now knew there was a problem.

And whoever that person was...

They would know Sofia had found it.

A soft sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Approaching.

Alessandro's body immediately moved.

He stepped between Sofia and the entrance.

The same instinct that had protected him in countless dangerous situations now protected a child he had met less than an hour ago.

The door lock beeped.

Someone was attempting access.

Alessandro looked at the security monitor.

The camera showed a familiar face.

Robert Langley.

His family's adviser.

The man who had stood beside his father.

The man who had raised Alessandro after his father died.

The man who knew every secret of the Duca family.

Robert stood outside the war room.

Waiting.

Alessandro stared at the screen.

Then at Sofia.

The girl quietly whispered:

"That's him."

Alessandro's heart stopped for a moment.

"What?"

She pointed at the monitor.

"That's the man my mother warned you about."

The door beeped again.

Robert was trying to enter.

Alessandro did not move.

For years, he had trusted Robert more than anyone alive.

He had shared his fears with him.

His plans.

His weaknesses.

Everything.

And now a little girl was telling him the man standing outside that door was the reason his family had been betrayed.

Alessandro slowly reached toward the control panel.

But he did not open the door.

Not yet.

May you like

Because for the first time in his life...

Alessandro Duca was afraid of what he would discover about the person he trusted most.
