Chapter 6 - The Truth Behind the Missing Daughter

For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The question remained in the hallway like a weapon.
"What did you do that my mother had to run away from?"
Sofia’s voice was quiet.
Too quiet for a question carrying that much pain.
Robert Langley looked at the little girl standing behind Alessandro, and for the first time since he arrived, the old adviser looked uncertain.
Not guilty.
Not yet.
But uncertain.
Alessandro noticed.
And that was enough.
Because Robert had always been prepared.
For every negotiation.
Every confrontation.
Every possible outcome.
He was the man who always had an answer before anyone finished asking a question.
But now a six-year-old girl had asked him something he could not immediately escape.
Alessandro slowly turned toward him.
"Answer her."
Robert looked back at him.
"Alessandro—"
"No."
His voice stopped him.
Not loudly.
Not aggressively.
Simply with authority.
The same authority Robert had spent years teaching him to develop.
"You have spent years telling me that information is power."
Alessandro stepped closer.
"So tell me the truth."
Robert remained silent.
The guards around them lowered their eyes.
They had never seen this.
Nobody had ever forced Robert Langley into silence.
The man who knew everything.
The man who controlled conversations.
The man who could convince enemies to become allies with a few carefully chosen words.
Now he stood in front of Alessandro Duca with nothing.
Finally, Robert exhaled.
"Elena was not supposed to find it."
Alessandro's eyes narrowed.
"Find what?"
"The archive."
The word meant nothing to everyone else.
But the way Robert said it made Alessandro understand it mattered.
"What archive?"
Robert looked toward the war room.
"The original records."
"The original records of what?"
Robert hesitated.
Then he said:
"The Duca empire."
Silence.
Alessandro frowned.
"That makes no sense."
Robert looked at him.
"Your father did not build everything you know."
The words unsettled him.
"My father?"
"Before the businesses. Before the influence. Before the name became feared."
Robert paused.
"There were things your father erased."
Alessandro stared.
"My father was many things."
His voice hardened.
"But he was not a liar."
Robert's expression changed slightly.
A mixture of sadness and frustration.
"That is what made him dangerous."
Alessandro hated hearing his father spoken about this way.
Especially by Robert.
The man who had always defended him.
"Explain."
Robert looked at Sofia.
Then at Alessandro.
"Your father created the Duca empire to protect the family."
"And?"
"He made enemies because he refused to become like them."
Alessandro waited.
"He rejected the people who helped him rise. He cut ties. He destroyed agreements. He believed the family name should belong only to the Duca bloodline."
Robert's voice lowered.
"Some people never forgave him."
"And Elena found them?"
Robert nodded.
"She found evidence that some of those people never actually left."
Alessandro felt a cold sensation move through him.
"They stayed."
"Yes."
"Inside my organization?"
Robert looked away.
"Yes."
The answer was worse than he expected.
Because suddenly everything connected.
The hidden access point.
The secret network.
The silent surveillance.
It was not a recent betrayal.
It was something that had been growing quietly for years.
Maybe decades.
Alessandro looked at Robert.
"And you knew."
Robert did not deny it.
"I knew there were threats."
"You knew there were people inside my family."
"Yes."
"And you said nothing."
Robert's face hardened.
"Because I was handling it."
Alessandro almost smiled.
There it was.
The sentence that explained everything.
Not because Robert wanted power.
Because Robert believed he deserved control.
"You were not protecting me."
Robert looked at him.
"I was."
"No."
Alessandro shook his head.
"You were protecting your version of the family."
The words hit harder than any accusation.
Because Robert knew they were true.
For years, he had convinced himself that he was the only person capable of keeping the Duca empire alive.
He had started by protecting Alessandro.
Then protecting became controlling.
And controlling became hiding the truth.
"What happened to Elena?" Alessandro asked.
Robert looked at Sofia.
The girl's expression changed.
She already knew this part was important.
Robert was silent for a long time.
Then he said:
"She discovered the second network."
Alessandro waited.
"She copied everything."
"The evidence?"
"Yes."
"Then why didn't she expose it?"
Robert's eyes lowered.
"Because she realized the people involved were too powerful."
Alessandro's voice became colder.
"People like you."
Robert looked at him.
"People like me."
The admission was quiet.
But it was there.
Alessandro felt something inside him break.
Not because Robert admitted involvement.
Because Robert sounded tired.
As if he had carried the guilt for years.
"Where is she?"
The question changed everything.
Robert looked at Sofia.
The girl stopped breathing for a moment.
"My mother."
Robert closed his eyes.
A painful silence followed.
"She is alive."
Alessandro froze.
Sofia looked up.
For the first time all night, her calm expression disappeared.
"Alive?"
Robert nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Alessandro turned toward him.
"Then where is she?"
Robert did not answer.
"Where is Elena?"
"I don't know."
Alessandro stared.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"It's the truth."
Robert looked genuinely exhausted.
"The last time I saw Elena, she was leaving with the evidence."
"Who was after her?"
Robert said nothing.
Alessandro stepped closer.
"Who?"
The old man finally answered.
"The people who created the second network."
"And their names?"
Robert hesitated.
Then:
"Some of them are still inside your organization."
Alessandro felt his anger rise.
"Names."
Robert looked at him.
"I cannot give you names."
"Cannot?"
"Not yet."
Alessandro's expression became dangerous.
"After everything tonight, you still think you decide what I know?"
Robert did not respond.
And that angered Alessandro more.
Then Sofia spoke.
"Mr. Duca."
Both men looked at her.
She walked toward the desk.
"The second layer."
Alessandro remembered the message.
ACCESS SECOND LAYER.
"What about it?"
"My mother said the truth was there."
She pointed at the computer.
"She said she couldn't open it."
Alessandro frowned.
"Why?"
"Because she said only you could."
Robert's face changed.
Just slightly.
But Alessandro saw it.
"You know about this."
Robert looked away.
That was enough.
Alessandro walked back into the war room.
The others followed.
The underground room felt different now.
It was no longer a place of power.
It was a crime scene.
A place where years of secrets had finally started coming apart.
Alessandro sat at the computer.
Sofia stood beside him.
Robert remained near the door.
Watching.
Waiting.
Alessandro entered the command sequence.
The system scanned his fingerprint.
Then his eyes.
Then his voice.
A final message appeared.
DUCA FAMILY ROOT ACCESS CONFIRMED.
The screen went dark.
Then a hidden folder opened.
One file appeared.
No name.
No date.
Only a symbol.
The same silver wolf.
Sofia touched her pendant.
Alessandro opened the file.
Inside was a video.
A video recorded years earlier.
The screen flickered.
Then Elena Vale appeared.
But this time...
She was not alone.
Standing beside her was a young Alessandro.
Much younger.
And beside them...
Was Robert Langley.
Alessandro stared.
Because he had never seen this recording before.
Elena looked into the camera.
Her expression was serious.
"If Alessandro is watching this, it means Robert failed to keep the secret hidden."
Robert went completely still.
Alessandro slowly turned toward him.
Elena continued:
"And it means Alessandro finally knows the truth."
The video paused.
A new message appeared.
THE PERSON YOU TRUSTED MOST WAS NEVER THE BEGINNING OF THE BETRAYAL.
Alessandro stared at the screen.
Then another line appeared.
HE WAS ONLY THE PERSON WHO HELPED HIDE IT.
The room went silent.
Robert looked down.
And for the first time...
Alessandro realized something even more terrifying than Robert's betrayal.
Robert Langley had not created the darkness inside his family.
He had only been standing in front of it.
Protecting the real person behind it.
The person who had been controlling everything from the shadows.
And now Alessandro knew one thing.
May you like
The man he trusted most was not the end of the secret.
He was the door leading to it.
