Chapter 8 - The Last Move Against the Shadow

The old foundation house had been abandoned for fourteen years.

At least, that was what everyone believed.

The building stood on the edge of Duca property, hidden behind a line of ancient trees and surrounded by overgrown fields. Once, it had been the place where Alessandro’s father held private meetings away from the eyes of the outside world.

Before the empire became too large.

Before enemies became too many.

Before trust became something Alessandro could no longer afford to give easily.

The house carried memories.

Some good.

Most painful.

That was why nobody went there anymore.

But at 2:30 in the morning, Alessandro Duca drove toward it with only three people beside him.

Sofia.

Robert.

And the truth.

Rain covered the windshield as the black SUV moved through the empty road.

The mansion behind them had disappeared into the darkness.

No guards.

No security team.

No army of loyal men.

Alessandro had intentionally left them behind.

Because Victor Hale wanted him to come alone.

And Alessandro wanted Victor to believe he had won.

Inside the vehicle, nobody spoke.

Sofia sat in the back seat, holding the silver wolf pendant in her hand.

Robert sat beside her, staring out the window.

The man looked older than he had hours ago.

Not because of age.

Because secrets were heavy.

And Robert had carried too many.

Alessandro watched the road ahead.

"You knew this place existed."

Robert looked up.

"Yes."

"You knew Victor used it."

A pause.

"Yes."

Alessandro tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

"You knew my father brought him here."

Robert nodded.

"Many times."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Robert looked down.

"Because your father didn't want you to know."

Alessandro almost smiled.

Another secret.

Another excuse.

"My father is dead, Robert."

The older man said nothing.

"So stop protecting his decisions."

Robert looked at him.

"That is exactly what I did wrong."

The confession surprised Alessandro.

Robert continued.

"I spent years believing protecting someone's legacy meant protecting every choice they ever made."

His voice became quieter.

"But sometimes protecting a person means admitting they were wrong."

The rain grew heavier.

For a moment, Alessandro saw the man he remembered.

Not the adviser.

Not the traitor.

Just Robert.

A man who had made terrible decisions while believing they were necessary.

But regret did not erase damage.

And forgiveness was not the same as forgetting.

"Why did Victor want Sofia?"

Robert looked toward the girl.

"Because Elena left something behind."

"What?"

"I don't know."

Alessandro glanced at him.

"You expect me to believe that?"

Robert nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because if I knew, I would have already been dead."

The answer was honest.

And that honesty was more disturbing than a lie.

The SUV stopped outside the old foundation house.

The building looked exactly as Alessandro remembered.

Dark windows.

Cracked stone walls.

A place frozen in time.

The three of them stepped outside.

The rain immediately soaked their clothes.

Sofia looked at the house.

"My mother was here."

Alessandro looked at her.

"How do you know?"

She touched the pendant.

"She told me."

Robert looked surprised.

"When?"

"Before she disappeared."

The answer changed everything.

Elena had not just prepared Sofia to find Alessandro.

She had prepared her for this moment.

Alessandro approached the entrance.

The door was unlocked.

That worried him more than a locked door would have.

People who wanted to hide something locked doors.

People who wanted you to enter left them open.

Inside, the house smelled like dust and old wood.

But beneath that was something else.

Fresh air conditioning.

Electricity.

Someone had been here recently.

Alessandro raised his hand.

Everyone stopped.

He looked around.

"He's been waiting."

Robert nodded.

"I know."

They moved deeper inside.

The old meeting room was exactly as Alessandro remembered.

A large wooden table.

Old photographs.

A fireplace.

A wall covered with family history.

But something was different.

One photograph had been removed.

A small empty space remained on the wall.

Alessandro stepped closer.

"That was my father's picture."

Robert looked at it.

"No."

Alessandro turned.

"What?"

Robert's expression changed.

"That was not your father's picture."

A cold feeling moved through Alessandro.

"Then whose was it?"

Before Robert could answer, the lights turned on.

A voice came from the other side of the room.

"Finally."

Alessandro turned.

Victor Hale stood near the fireplace.

Older than the recording.

But exactly the same.

Calm.

Confident.

Untouched by fear.

Two men stood behind him.

Armed.

But Victor did not need weapons.

He had always preferred something more powerful.

Information.

"I wondered how long it would take you."

Alessandro stared at him.

"You knew I was coming."

Victor smiled.

"I knew you would come."

His eyes moved toward Sofia.

"And I knew you would bring her."

Alessandro stepped slightly in front of the girl.

Victor noticed.

"Interesting."

"What?"

"You protect her the same way your father protected you."

The comparison angered Alessandro.

"Don't compare yourself to my father."

Victor smiled.

"You still worship him."

"No."

Alessandro's voice was cold.

"I remember him."

Victor walked closer.

"That is the difference between us."

He looked around the room.

"You remember a hero."

He touched the old wooden table.

"I remember a man."

The words created tension.

Because somewhere deep inside, Alessandro knew every person was more complicated than the stories built around them.

Even his father.

Even Robert.

Even himself.

Victor looked at Sofia.

"Do you know why your mother chose you?"

Sofia remained silent.

Victor continued.

"Because children are the only people adults underestimate."

Alessandro's expression hardened.

"You used a child."

"No."

Victor shook his head.

"Your mother did."

The room became silent.

Sofia looked confused.

Victor continued.

"Elena knew the evidence could not survive with adults."

"Adults lie."

"Adults betray."

"Adults become afraid."

He looked at Alessandro.

"She believed a child would carry the truth better than any soldier."

Alessandro said nothing.

Because part of him understood.

Sofia had survived because nobody expected her to be dangerous.

Victor stepped toward the table.

"You think I wanted to destroy the Duca family."

He smiled.

"I wanted to save it."

Alessandro laughed coldly.

"By controlling it?"

"By fixing it."

Victor pointed toward Robert.

"Ask him."

Everyone looked at Robert.

The older man remained silent.

Victor smiled.

"He knows."

Alessandro looked at Robert.

"What?"

Robert closed his eyes.

"Victor believed your father built the empire incorrectly."

Victor continued.

"He built it on loyalty."

A pause.

"I built mine on certainty."

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

"And you think that makes you better?"

"No."

Victor smiled.

"I know it does."

The arrogance in his voice was clear.

But Alessandro noticed something else.

Desperation.

Victor was not explaining because he wanted them to understand.

He was explaining because he needed to be recognized.

He needed someone to admit he was right.

That was his weakness.

"You lost," Alessandro said.

Victor's smile faded slightly.

"What?"

"You spent years hiding."

Alessandro stepped forward.

"You created secret systems."

"You manipulated people."

"You destroyed lives."

His voice became colder.

"Because you wanted someone to finally admit you were smarter."

Victor stared.

And Alessandro knew he had hit the truth.

"You don't want an empire."

"You want validation."

For the first time, Victor's expression changed.

Anger.

Small.

But real.

Then the old computer near the wall turned on.

A familiar symbol appeared.

The silver wolf.

Sofia stepped forward.

"It's the second layer."

Everyone looked at her.

Victor's expression changed completely.

Not anger.

Fear.

"How?"

Alessandro noticed.

Victor was afraid.

Not of him.

Not of the guards.

Of the computer.

Sofia walked toward it.

"My mother said this was the only thing you couldn't control."

Victor moved.

"Stop her."

The armed men stepped forward.

But Alessandro was faster.

He moved between them.

The room exploded into chaos.

But Sofia reached the computer.

Her small fingers touched the keyboard.

The system activated.

A final file appeared.

And the name on it shocked everyone.

ROBERT LANGLEY.

Robert froze.

Alessandro looked at him.

"What is this?"

Robert stared at the screen.

His face lost all color.

Because he knew.

Whatever Elena had hidden...

Whatever truth remained...

It was not about Victor.

May you like

It was about Robert.

And the final secret of the Duca family was finally ready to be revealed.
