Chapter 3 - The Girl With the Silver Wolf Pendant

The door to the war room remained closed.
For ten seconds, nobody moved.
Not Alessandro.
Not Sofia.
Not the man standing on the other side.
The security monitor displayed Robert Langley’s face in perfect detail.
A man Alessandro had known since childhood.
A man who had attended his father’s funeral.
A man who had taught him how to negotiate, how to survive, and how to recognize danger before it arrived.
Robert had never been just an adviser.
He had been family.
And yet, standing behind the reinforced steel door, he suddenly looked like a stranger.
Alessandro watched the camera feed carefully.
Robert was calm.
Too calm.
His gray suit was perfectly arranged. His silver hair was neatly combed. His hands rested behind his back in the same respectful posture he had used for decades.
Anyone else looking at him would see loyalty.
Alessandro saw something different now.
He saw a man who knew exactly where he was standing.
Exactly what room he was outside.
Exactly what he was trying to access.
"How did he know?" Alessandro whispered.
Sofia remained quiet.
The girl stared at Robert through the monitor.
"He always knows."
Alessandro looked down at her.
"What does that mean?"
Sofia touched the silver wolf pendant hanging around her neck.
"My mother said he was always watching."
The words were simple.
But they carried a weight Alessandro did not want to accept.
He walked toward the control panel.
The door remained locked.
Outside, Robert pressed the communication button.
"Alessandro?"
His voice came through the speaker.
The same voice Alessandro had heard thousands of times.
Calm.
Reliable.
Familiar.
"Are you inside?"
Alessandro said nothing.
Robert waited.
Then continued.
"I noticed a security alert from this level. I thought something might be wrong."
Security alert.
Alessandro looked at the computer.
The hidden connection was still active.
A small detail.
A detail Robert should not have known.
Unless...
Unless he was connected to it.
"You should leave," Alessandro finally said.
There was a pause.
A very small pause.
But enough.
Robert had not expected that answer.
"Alessandro."
The older man's tone changed slightly.
Not anger.
Concern.
A carefully controlled concern.
"I have been protecting this family since before you were old enough to understand what it meant."
Alessandro stared at the door.
"Have you?"
Silence.
The question landed harder than a threat.
Outside, Robert stopped speaking.
Inside, Sofia watched Alessandro.
She seemed surprised.
Not because he questioned Robert.
Because he actually did.
For years, nobody questioned Robert Langley.
The man had become part of the foundation beneath the Duca empire.
But foundations could hide cracks.
And cracks could destroy buildings.
"Open the door," Robert said quietly.
"No."
Another silence.
This one longer.
"Alessandro, whatever you think is happening, you need to understand something."
Robert's voice lowered.
"People are trying to manipulate you."
Alessandro glanced at Sofia.
The little girl looked back at him.
Not frightened.
Waiting.
"What people?"
Robert did not answer immediately.
That was the answer.
Alessandro's expression hardened.
"You know."
"I know there is a child inside a room where she should not be."
His voice became colder.
"That is what concerns me."
Sofia looked down.
For the first time, Alessandro noticed something.
She was not afraid of Robert.
She was afraid of something else.
Something connected to him.
Alessandro stepped away from the door.
"How long have you known she was here?"
Robert remained silent.
That was enough.
Alessandro closed his eyes briefly.
The betrayal was no longer a possibility.
It was becoming a reality.
"You knew."
Robert finally spoke.
"Alessandro, listen to me."
"No."
His voice was sharper now.
"You listen."
The room seemed smaller.
"You entered my system."
"I did not."
"You knew about her."
"I was trying to protect you."
"From what?"
Robert did not respond.
Alessandro looked at the computer screen.
The hidden connection.
The secret access.
The missing information.
The pieces were beginning to connect.
Robert had not broken into his empire.
He had built a door inside it.
The realization was almost impossible to accept.
Because betrayal from an enemy was expected.
Betrayal from family was something else.
That was why it hurt.
A stranger could only take what you owned.
Family could take what you believed.
Alessandro turned away from the door.
"Sofia."
The girl looked up.
"Tell me about your mother."
Her fingers tightened around the pendant.
"My mother was named Elena."
The name struck him.
Alessandro froze.
Elena.
He had not heard that name spoken in years.
Not publicly.
Not privately.
Never.
"Elena Vale?"
Sofia nodded.
"You knew her."
Alessandro looked away.
Memories returned.
A woman who had worked with his father.
A brilliant woman who understood computers better than anyone he had ever met.
Someone who disappeared after discovering something inside the organization.
Everyone believed she had left.
That she had abandoned her work.
That she had chosen to disappear.
But Alessandro remembered something else.
The night she vanished.
Robert had told him:
"Some people are not strong enough for this life."
At the time, Alessandro believed him.
Now he wondered if he should have asked more questions.
"What happened to your mother?"
Sofia looked at the floor.
"She told me not to be scared."
Alessandro waited.
"She said bad people would say she was gone because she wanted to leave."
The girl's voice became quieter.
"But she didn't leave."
Alessandro felt a knot form in his chest.
"What happened?"
Sofia looked at him.
"She found the secret."
"What secret?"
She looked toward the computer.
"The one inside your family."
The words hung in the air.
A family secret.
A hidden betrayal.
A truth someone had spent years burying.
Alessandro looked at the flash drive still sitting on the desk.
The evidence Elena had left behind.
The reason Sofia had come here.
The reason she had risked entering the most protected room in the Duca empire.
He picked up the drive.
Before he could insert it into the computer, the lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
The monitors went black.
Alessandro immediately reacted.
He moved toward Sofia.
"Stay behind me."
The girl obeyed.
The emergency lights activated, painting the room in a dark red glow.
Then the main monitor turned back on.
A single message appeared.
Not from the system.
From someone else.
A black screen.
White letters.
WE KNOW SHE FOUND YOU.
Alessandro stared.
His blood went cold.
Sofia whispered:
"They know."
Another message appeared.
THIS WAS NEVER ABOUT THE COMPUTER.
Alessandro looked at her.
The girl's face had lost its confidence.
For the first time, she looked like a child.
The final message appeared.
IT WAS ABOUT FINDING THE GIRL.
Alessandro's expression changed instantly.
The danger was no longer hidden.
Someone was coming.
Not for his empire.
Not for his secrets.
For Sofia.
The old instinct returned.
The one that had kept him alive through wars, betrayals, and countless enemies.
Protect what matters.
He moved toward the weapons cabinet hidden inside the wall.
But before he reached it, Sofia spoke.
"Mr. Duca."
He stopped.
She rarely used his name.
"What?"
She looked at the screen.
"My mother said you would do this."
"Do what?"
"Protect me."
Alessandro turned slowly.
The little girl looked at him with the same fearless eyes that had stared at his impossible security system.
"She said you would be angry first."
A small pause.
"Then you would remember who you really are."
For the first time that night, Alessandro did not see Sofia as a mystery.
He did not see her as a threat.
He saw her as someone who had been running from danger long before she entered his world.
The door lock suddenly beeped.
Someone was trying to override the security.
Robert's voice came through the speaker one final time.
"Alessandro."
The voice was different now.
No longer the trusted adviser.
No longer the family friend.
Something colder.
"You have no idea what you just uncovered."
Alessandro looked at the locked door.
Then at Sofia.
Then at the hidden system that had exposed the truth.
His decision was already made.
For years, he had protected the Duca empire.
Tonight, he would protect the one person who had just shown him why it was falling apart.
Alessandro reached for the manual lock.
And for the first time in decades...
May you like
He prepared to open a door not to welcome someone in.
But to face the person waiting on the other side.
