Chapter 7 - The Last Move Against the Traitor

The room remained silent after the message appeared.
HE WAS ONLY THE PERSON WHO HELPED HIDE IT.
The words stayed on the screen like a warning.
Like a confession.
Alessandro Duca stared at them without blinking.
For most of his life, he had believed betrayal was simple.
There were enemies.
There were allies.
There were people who stood beside you and people who stood against you.
But tonight had destroyed that belief.
Because the truth was far more dangerous.
Sometimes the person standing beside you was not the enemy.
Sometimes they were the person protecting the enemy.
Behind him, Robert Langley said nothing.
And that silence told Alessandro everything.
"You knew."
Robert looked at the screen.
"I knew there were deeper layers."
"Not what I asked."
Alessandro turned.
"You knew someone else was behind this."
Robert remained quiet.
"You knew Elena found something bigger."
A pause.
"You knew she was trying to warn me."
Another pause.
Alessandro stepped closer.
"And you still let me believe she abandoned us."
Robert's face tightened.
"I was trying to keep you alive."
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
Alessandro laughed softly.
A cold, empty sound.
"You always say that."
Robert looked at him.
"Because it's true."
"No."
Alessandro shook his head.
"You say it because it makes everything easier."
The older man frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"It means you can convince yourself you are a hero."
The words hit.
"You tell yourself every secret you hide is protection. Every decision you make is necessary. Every person you hurt is a sacrifice."
Alessandro looked at the screen.
"But eventually, Robert, you stop protecting people."
His eyes returned to him.
"You start controlling them."
For a moment, Robert looked like he wanted to argue.
Then he stopped.
Because he knew Alessandro was right.
Sofia stood quietly near the desk, watching the two men.
She had spent years running from a secret she barely understood.
Now she was watching two people who had been connected to that secret finally face each other.
"Who is he?"
Alessandro asked.
Robert looked confused.
"Who?"
"The person behind this."
Robert's expression changed.
A warning.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For Alessandro.
"You are not ready."
Alessandro's eyes became colder.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
He pointed at the screen.
"My father."
"Elena."
"You."
"Everyone thinks they get to decide what I can handle."
He stepped closer.
"But nobody asked what happens when I find out without your permission."
Robert looked away.
That was when Alessandro knew.
Robert knew the name.
He knew the person.
And he was afraid of saying it.
"Tell me."
Robert remained silent.
"Tell me."
The second time, Alessandro's voice carried the weight of command.
Robert finally spoke.
"Victor."
The name meant nothing at first.
Then Alessandro noticed Sofia.
The girl froze.
A tiny reaction.
But enough.
"You know that name."
Sofia looked down.
"My mother told me never to say it."
Alessandro turned toward her.
"Why?"
"Because she said people who say his name disappear."
The room became colder.
Robert closed his eyes.
"Victor Hale."
Alessandro looked back.
"Who is he?"
Robert answered slowly.
"The man who helped your father build the first version of the empire."
Alessandro's expression changed.
"Another founder?"
"Yes."
"Then why have I never heard of him?"
Robert looked at the screen.
"Because your father erased him."
"Why?"
"Because Victor did not believe the Duca family should control the empire."
Robert's voice became quieter.
"He believed the strongest person should."
Alessandro understood.
Power.
Not family.
Not loyalty.
Not legacy.
Only power.
"And you worked with him."
Robert looked at him.
"At first."
The answer surprised Alessandro.
"At first?"
Robert nodded.
"I believed I could control him."
A bitter smile appeared.
"I was wrong."
For the first time, Alessandro saw something he had never seen before.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not the fear of losing power.
The fear of knowing someone else was always more dangerous.
"Victor created the second network?"
Robert nodded.
"He built the structure. The surveillance. The hidden channels."
"And you?"
"I maintained it."
Alessandro's jaw tightened.
"You helped him."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Robert looked toward Sofia.
"Because I thought I could stop him from going further."
Alessandro shook his head.
"You joined a fire because you thought you could control the flames."
Robert did not respond.
Because there was nothing to say.
Suddenly, every monitor in the war room turned black.
The three of them looked up.
A second later, a message appeared.
HELLO, ALESSANDRO.
Sofia stepped closer to him.
Robert immediately moved.
"Turn it off."
Alessandro looked at him.
"You know what this is."
Robert's face was pale.
"Yes."
The screen changed.
A video began playing.
A man appeared.
Older.
Confident.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
A calm smile.
Victor Hale.
Alessandro watched.
The man looked directly into the camera.
"Alessandro Duca."
His voice was smooth.
Almost friendly.
"I imagine you are angry."
Alessandro remained silent.
Victor continued.
"That is understandable."
The man smiled.
"You spent your entire life believing your family was built on loyalty."
A pause.
"But loyalty is just a story powerful people tell themselves when they need others to obey."
Robert looked away.
Victor continued.
"Your father understood this."
Alessandro's expression hardened.
"Do not speak about my father."
The recording continued.
"He made the same mistake you made."
Victor leaned closer.
"He trusted people."
The screen flickered.
Then another image appeared.
A photograph.
Elena.
Alive.
Standing beside Victor.
Alessandro froze.
Sofia gasped.
Robert whispered:
"No..."
The image disappeared.
Victor returned.
"Your mother found the truth because she was smarter than everyone else."
His expression changed.
"But she also made the mistake of thinking truth was enough."
Alessandro's hands tightened.
"What did you do to her?"
The video continued as if answering.
"She is alive."
A pause.
"At least, she was the last time I saw her."
Sofia looked terrified.
Alessandro felt anger rising.
"You took her."
Victor smiled slightly.
"No."
The screen showed another image.
A hidden facility.
"She came to me."
Alessandro stared.
"Why?"
"Because she wanted to protect Sofia."
The room went silent.
Victor continued.
"That is the difference between your mother and everyone else."
"She understood something."
"Family is not about blood."
The screen went dark.
Then one final message appeared.
BRING THE GIRL TO THE OLD FOUNDATION HOUSE.
OR YOU WILL NEVER SEE THE TRUTH.
The monitors turned off.
Nobody spoke.
Sofia looked at Alessandro.
"He's coming for me."
Alessandro looked at her.
"No."
The answer was immediate.
"He is coming for what you know."
Robert stepped forward.
"Alessandro, you cannot fight him directly."
Alessandro looked at him.
"You spent years trying."
Robert lowered his eyes.
"And failed."
A long silence followed.
Then Alessandro picked up the silver wolf pendant from Sofia's hand.
He looked at the symbol.
The same symbol that had started everything.
A secret.
A warning.
A promise.
Then he placed it back around her neck.
"Your mother trusted me with something."
Sofia looked at him.
"What?"
Alessandro looked toward the war room entrance.
"The chance to finish what she started."
Robert stared.
"You are going after him."
Alessandro walked toward the weapons cabinet.
"No."
He opened it.
"I am bringing him to me."
For the first time that night, the fear in the room changed.
It was no longer the fear of being hunted.
It was the fear of what happened when the hunter became the target.
Alessandro Duca had spent his entire life protecting his empire.
But now he understood something.
The empire was never the thing that needed saving.
The truth was.
And Victor Hale had just made his final mistake.
He had threatened the one person Alessandro had promised to protect.
A little girl who had walked into a locked room and exposed the betrayal everyone else was too afraid to see.
Now Alessandro was going to open another door.
One that had remained closed for years.
May you like
And behind it...
Was the man who started everything.
