The Colonel They Never Knew / Chapter 6 / 7

Chapter 6 - The Enemy Inside The Room

The door opened.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The person standing outside slowly stepped into the emergency light.

I saw the uniform first.

The insignia.

The rank.

Then the face.

And my entire world stopped.

Because I knew him.

Not from a photograph.

Not from a report.

From my own memories.

General Marcus Hale.

The man who had signed Commander Ward’s death report.

The man who had personally told me that my commander had been killed during the mission.

The man who had looked me in the eyes and said:

"There was nothing you could have done."

Three years ago, I believed him.

Now he was standing inside my hospital room.

Alive.

Calm.

And looking directly at me.

"Colonel Carter."

His voice was steady.

Almost friendly.

That made it worse.

My hand moved protectively around Leo.

Ward immediately stepped in front of me.

A reaction.

A reflex.

Something he had done hundreds of times before.

But this time, he wasn't protecting a soldier.

He was protecting a mother.

Hale noticed.

A small smile appeared on his face.

"Still protecting her, James?"

The room went silent.

My eyes moved between them.

"You know each other."

Nobody answered.

I looked at Ward.

Then at Hale.

Then at Sarah.

Everyone had pieces of the truth.

Everyone except me.

"Explain."

My voice wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

Everyone listened.

Hale looked at me.

"Colonel, there are things you need to understand before you make any decisions."

I almost laughed.

"Decisions?"

I looked around the room.

"My husband tried to erase my name from my son's records."

My eyes moved to Daniel.

"Commander Ward was alive the entire time."

Then to Hale.

"The man who told me he died is standing here."

I tightened my grip on Leo.

"And you're telling me I need to understand something?"

Nobody spoke.

Because they knew I was right.

Hale sighed.

"I came here to protect you."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You came here because you know I found something."

His expression changed slightly.

A tiny reaction.

But enough.

I saw it.

"You know about the evidence."

Silence.

That was confirmation.

The captain immediately stepped forward.

"General Hale, you are not authorized to enter this room without clearance."

Hale looked at him.

"You still think this is about authority?"

The captain didn't move.

"Then what is it about?"

Hale looked at me.

"It's about survival."

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because I had heard that tone before.

From people who knew they were losing control.

"What evidence did Commander Ward hide?"

Hale looked at Ward.

Then back at me.

"You really don't know."

I felt my anger rise.

"Stop talking like everyone is protecting me."

I stared at all of them.

"I don't need protection."

The room went quiet.

"I need the truth."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Ward finally said:

"The evidence is connected to Leo."

My heart stopped.

I looked down at my son.

"No."

Ward stepped closer.

"Elena, listen."

"No."

My voice became sharper.

"My son is six hours old."

"I know."

"How could he possibly be connected to anything?"

Ward looked at me.

"Because the person behind this network didn't know when to stop."

The words sent a chill through me.

"What does that mean?"

Sarah looked down.

Then whispered:

"Your pregnancy wasn't an accident."

The room became completely silent.

I stared at her.

"What?"

Sarah looked like she regretted saying it.

But it was too late.

"Three years ago, Commander Ward discovered that the network was tracking certain military families."

"Why?"

"Because they were looking for leverage."

I looked at Daniel.

Then back at her.

"No."

Sarah nodded slowly.

"They didn't choose you because you were weak."

She paused.

"They chose you because you were valuable."

My mind raced.

Every strange conversation.

Every unexplained event.

Every time Daniel avoided questions.

Every time his family criticized my career.

I thought they were judging me.

Maybe they were measuring me.

Hale interrupted.

"This is exactly why I tried to keep Ward away."

Ward looked at him.

"You tried to bury the truth."

"I tried to stop a war."

"You protected yourself."

Hale's face hardened.

"You have no idea what was at risk."

I watched them argue.

Two powerful men.

Two people who had controlled information for years.

But now they were trapped.

Because I was finally asking questions.

"Daniel."

He looked at me.

I had almost forgotten he was there.

"Tell me the truth."

His face changed.

The fear returned.

"Elena..."

"No."

I shook my head.

"Not another excuse."

I looked directly at him.

"Did you know who I was before we met?"

Long silence.

Then:

"Yes."

The answer hurt more than I expected.

Victoria gasped.

"What?"

Daniel looked at me.

"I didn't know everything."

"But you knew enough."

He lowered his head.

"Yes."

I felt my chest tighten.

"Why marry me?"

He looked broken.

"Because I was supposed to watch you."

Nobody moved.

The words hung in the room.

Victoria stepped back.

"Daniel..."

He closed his eyes.

"I was told to get close to you."

My heart felt like it stopped.

"By who?"

He didn't answer.

I already knew.

But I needed to hear it.

"Daniel."

His eyes filled with guilt.

"The person who gave me those orders..."

He looked toward Hale.

Everyone turned.

Hale's expression changed.

For the first time, he looked angry.

"Don't."

Daniel swallowed.

"The person who gave me those orders was..."

Suddenly, the hospital monitors began beeping.

Fast.

The officers turned.

The lights flickered again.

The captain looked at his device.

"Someone breached the security system."

Ward immediately moved toward the door.

"No."

I looked at him.

"What?"

His face had lost all emotion.

"They found us."

The room froze.

The captain checked the cameras.

The screen displayed the hospital hallway.

Empty.

Then the image changed.

A figure appeared.

Walking slowly toward the room.

Everyone watched.

Nobody spoke.

Because the person on the camera wasn't coming for me.

They were coming for Leo.

Ward stared at the screen.

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"That's impossible."

I looked at him.

"Who is it?"

Ward didn't answer.

May you like

Because the camera zoomed closer.

And the person walking down the hallway was carrying the same classified file that had disappeared with Commander Ward three years ago...
