Chapter 5 - The Commander Who Came Back

The hospital door opened.
Everyone raised their weapons.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then the man standing outside stepped into the red emergency light.
Older.
Tired.
Different.
But unmistakable.
Commander James Ward.
The man who was supposed to be dead.
My fingers tightened around Leo's blanket.
For three years, I had imagined this moment.
I imagined finding answers.
I imagined confronting the person responsible for his death.
I imagined hearing his voice again.
But I never imagined seeing him standing in front of me inside a hospital room while I held my newborn son.
"Colonel Carter."
His voice was exactly the same.
Calm.
Controlled.
The voice of the man who trained me.
The voice of the man who taught me never to panic.
But I couldn't move.
Because my mind was fighting with reality.
"You died."
The words left my mouth quietly.
Commander Ward looked at me.
"I know."
Nobody spoke.
The captain slowly lowered his weapon.
Not completely.
Just enough.
Because even he didn't know what to believe.
Sarah covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
"James..."
Ward looked at her.
"Sarah."
The way they looked at each other told me everything.
They weren't strangers.
They had been carrying this secret together.
For years.
I felt something inside me crack.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Betrayal.
Everyone knew something.
Everyone except me.
The commander walked farther into the room.
The officers watched every movement.
"Elena, I know what this looks like."
I stared at him.
"Do you?"
His expression changed.
Because he knew exactly what I meant.
"You let me believe you were dead."
"Yes."
"You let me carry that guilt."
His eyes lowered.
"Yes."
"You let me believe I failed you."
Silence.
That silence hurt more than any answer.
I looked away.
Because I didn't want him to see how much those three years had affected me.
I had buried him.
I had blamed myself.
I had questioned every decision I made that night.
And now he was standing there.
Alive.
"Why?"
The question came out colder than I expected.
Ward looked at Daniel.
Then at Victoria.
Then back at me.
"Because the person who wanted me dead was closer than anyone realized."
My eyes moved to Daniel.
He immediately shook his head.
"No."
Ward didn't answer him.
That was worse.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Commander, you know I had nothing to do with this."
Ward studied him.
"Do I?"
The room became silent.
Daniel looked hurt.
"After everything?"
Ward's face remained serious.
"After everything, you should know better than anyone that trust is dangerous."
I watched the exchange.
There was history there.
A history nobody had told me about.
I looked at Ward.
"What is Daniel's connection to you?"
Ward didn't answer immediately.
That hesitation told me the truth was complicated.
"He wasn't the enemy."
Daniel released a breath.
But Ward continued.
"He wasn't innocent either."
Daniel's face changed.
Victoria looked at her son.
"What does that mean?"
Nobody answered.
Ward walked toward the hospital bed.
His eyes moved to Leo.
For the first time, his expression softened.
"He changed everything."
I frowned.
"What?"
Ward looked at me.
"The timing."
I didn't understand.
"Explain."
He took a breath.
"Three years ago, I discovered a network inside military intelligence."
Sarah nodded.
"The same network that caused the leak."
Ward continued.
"They weren't after information."
"Then what were they after?"
He looked at me.
"People."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"They were identifying officers who could expose them."
I stared.
"And you?"
"I was one of them."
I looked at Leo.
Then back at him.
"But why now?"
Ward's expression darkened.
"Because they know you have something they need."
I shook my head.
"I don't have anything."
"Yes, you do."
"What?"
He looked at my son.
My heart stopped.
"No."
Ward's voice softened.
"Elena, listen to me."
I looked at him.
"The day before I disappeared, I found evidence."
"Evidence of what?"
"The person controlling the network."
My breathing slowed.
"And?"
He looked at Daniel.
"I hid it somewhere nobody would search."
Daniel's face changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
I noticed.
So did everyone else.
"You know where it is."
Daniel immediately shook his head.
"No."
But this time, nobody believed him.
I looked at my husband.
"Daniel."
He looked at me.
"I swear."
"Then why did you react?"
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was enough.
Ward stepped closer.
"The evidence was hidden because I knew someone would come after anyone connected to me."
Sarah whispered:
"That's why he disappeared."
I looked at Ward.
"And why come back now?"
His eyes moved toward the hallway.
"Because they found it."
The room went silent.
The captain immediately turned.
"Who?"
Ward didn't answer.
Because suddenly everyone heard it.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Coming from the hallway.
The officers moved into position.
The captain raised his hand.
Nobody spoke.
The footsteps stopped outside the door.
Then a voice came through.
A voice I didn't recognize.
But Ward did.
His face changed.
For the first time since entering the room, Commander James Ward looked afraid.
"Impossible."
I looked at him.
"Who is it?"
He didn't answer.
The door handle slowly turned.
The person outside didn't knock.
Didn't announce themselves.
May you like
They simply opened the door.
And the first thing I saw was the same military insignia that belonged to the person who had ordered Commander Ward's death...
