Chapter 4 - The Name Hidden In The Photograph

The hospital lights flickered red.
My phone vibrated again.
A new message appeared.
One name.
A name I had buried three years ago.
"Commander James Ward."
I stared at the screen.
My hands went cold.
Because Commander Ward wasn't missing.
He wasn't hiding.
He wasn't injured.
He was dead.
At least, that was what I had been told.
The entire hospital room stood frozen.
The emergency lights painted everyone’s faces in a deep red glow.
My officers moved immediately.
The captain stepped between me and the door.
"Colonel, stay back."
I didn't move.
I couldn't.
Because the photograph on my phone had changed everything.
Not just because someone had taken it inside this hospital.
Not just because someone had been watching me.
Because whoever sent it knew exactly which name would break through my walls.
Commander James Ward.
My mentor.
My commander.
The man who taught me how to survive.
The man who disappeared during the investigation that nearly destroyed my career.
I looked at Sarah.
She was pale.
"You knew."
Her eyes moved away.
That was all the answer I needed.
"You knew he was alive."
Sarah shook her head quickly.
"No."
But her voice wasn't convincing.
"Elena, listen to me."
I held up the phone.
"Then explain this."
She looked at the photograph.
Her expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
That was worse.
"You've seen this before."
Sarah remained silent.
The captain looked at her.
"Sarah."
She closed her eyes.
Then she whispered:
"Not this exact picture."
The room became silent again.
I felt anger rising.
"You knew."
"I knew there was a possibility."
"A possibility?"
My voice became sharper.
"Commander Ward was declared dead."
Sarah looked at me.
"I never believed the report."
The words hit me harder than I expected.
Because I had believed it.
For three years.
I had carried the guilt.
I had replayed that mission every night.
Every mistake.
Every decision.
Every second where I wondered if I could have saved him.
And now someone was telling me he might have been alive all along.
I looked at Daniel.
He was still standing near the wall.
Quiet.
Too quiet.
"Why was he with my husband?"
Daniel immediately looked at me.
"I don't know."
I studied his face.
The old Daniel would have argued.
He would have become defensive.
But this Daniel looked terrified.
Not angry.
Terrified.
"Then why does he know you?"
Daniel didn't answer.
That silence was enough.
Victoria stepped toward him.
"Daniel?"
For the first time, she sounded afraid.
Not of me.
Of her own son.
I looked at her.
"You knew something."
She shook her head.
"No."
"Your family planned to take my child."
She looked away.
"I thought it was just about the divorce."
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
"You thought your son and husband were stealing my baby for a normal divorce?"
Victoria had no response.
The captain approached Daniel.
"Mr. Carter."
Daniel looked at him.
"You need to explain your connection to Commander Ward."
Daniel stayed silent.
The captain repeated:
"Now."
Daniel looked at me.
And for a second, I saw the man I married.
Not the stranger standing in front of me.
The man who used to hold my hand.
The man who promised to protect me.
Then he looked away.
"I met him once."
Everyone froze.
"Once?"
I repeated.
Daniel nodded.
"Before I met you."
My heart tightened.
"When?"
"Six years ago."
Sarah stepped forward.
"Where?"
Daniel looked at her.
And something changed.
Because he recognized her.
Not from today.
From before.
"I didn't know who he was."
Sarah stared.
"You expect us to believe that?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
He looked exhausted.
"I don't expect anyone to believe me."
I watched him carefully.
"Then tell the truth."
He took a breath.
"I was working for a technology company."
That wasn't surprising.
Daniel had always said he was in business development.
Nothing unusual.
But then he continued.
"That company had government contracts."
My expression changed.
"Military contracts?"
He nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Sarah's face hardened.
"And Commander Ward was involved."
Daniel looked at the floor.
"Yes."
The room became silent.
I felt something breaking inside.
Not because Daniel had connections.
Because he had hidden them.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
His eyes met mine.
"Because I was afraid."
"Of what?"
He didn't answer immediately.
Then:
"Of what would happen if you found out."
I almost whispered.
"You knew who I was."
Daniel looked away.
That was the answer.
He knew.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
Enough to understand why I protected my identity.
Enough to understand why I never talked about my missions.
Enough to use my own secrets against me.
The captain received another alert.
He checked his device.
His expression changed.
"What?"
I asked.
He looked at me.
"The person who accessed your son's medical records wasn't trying to find information."
I waited.
"They were trying to change something."
My stomach tightened.
"What?"
The captain hesitated.
"The birth certificate request."
I felt my blood run cold.
"What about it?"
He looked at Leo.
Then back at me.
"Someone attempted to remove your name as the mother."
The room went silent.
Victoria covered her mouth.
Richard looked at Daniel.
"Did you do this?"
Daniel immediately shook his head.
"No."
But nobody moved.
Nobody believed anything anymore.
I looked at my son.
My baby.
Six hours old.
And someone was already trying to erase me from his life.
The captain stepped closer.
"Colonel, we need to move you and the baby."
I nodded.
For the first time that day, I agreed.
Because this wasn't a family argument anymore.
This was an operation.
Someone had targeted my child.
Someone had entered my life.
Someone had spent months planning this.
The officers began securing the room.
Sarah moved toward me.
"There is something you need to know."
I looked at her.
"What?"
Her face was filled with regret.
"Commander Ward didn't disappear because of the investigation."
I waited.
"He disappeared because he found out who was behind everything."
My heart stopped.
"Who?"
Sarah looked toward Daniel.
Then toward the hallway.
Her voice dropped.
"The person who ordered him to disappear was someone you trusted completely."
The hospital door handle suddenly moved.
Everyone turned.
The officers raised their weapons.
May you like
The door opened slowly.
And the person standing outside was wearing Commander Ward's old identification badge...
