The Colonel They Never Knew / Chapter 3 / 7

Chapter 3 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

A hospital door opened slowly.

A voice whispered from the hallway:

"Colonel Carter."

I froze.

Not because someone had called my name.

Because I knew that voice.

My fingers tightened around the phone the captain had handed me.

The photograph on the screen suddenly felt heavier.

Daniel standing beside a man who was supposed to be dead.

A man whose name had been buried in a classified file three years ago.

A man I had personally watched disappear.

I looked toward the doorway.

But the person standing there wasn't the person I expected.

It was a woman.

Older.

Tired.

Her face carried years of fear.

And when she saw me holding Leo, tears filled her eyes.

"Elena..."

My entire body went still.

Because I recognized her.

Not from my personal life.

From my military past.

Her name was Sarah Mitchell.

A former intelligence analyst.

And the last person who had seen my old commanding officer alive.

The same commander who appeared beside my husband in the photograph.

The same commander who was officially declared dead.

Three years ago.

I remembered that night clearly.

The mission had been classified.

Only six people knew the details.

We were tracking a network responsible for leaking military operations.

Someone inside the system had been selling information.

Lives had been lost.

Families had been destroyed.

The person behind it was never found.

Then my commander disappeared.

Commander James Ward.

The man who trained me.

The man who promoted me.

The man who once told me something I never forgot.

"Elena, the most dangerous enemy isn't the one holding a weapon. It's the one standing beside you pretending to protect you."

I never understood why he said that.

Until now.

Sarah walked into the room slowly.

The officers immediately became alert.

"Sarah Mitchell," the captain said.

She looked at him.

"I'm not here to hurt anyone."

Then her eyes returned to me.

"I tried to contact you before."

I stared at her.

"Why didn't you?"

Her expression changed.

Because the answer was already obvious.

"Because someone was watching."

The room became silent.

Victoria looked between us.

"What is happening?"

Nobody answered her.

For the first time since she entered my hospital room, she looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Afraid.

I looked at Daniel.

He was standing near the wall.

Quiet.

Too quiet.

"How long?"

He looked at me.

"What?"

"How long have you known?"

His face changed.

A small reaction.

But I saw it.

I had spent years reading people.

A pause.

A movement.

A change in breathing.

They all told stories.

Daniel swallowed.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

I almost believed him.

Almost.

But then I noticed something.

His hands.

He was nervous.

But not confused.

A confused person asks questions.

A guilty person tries to avoid them.

I slowly lowered my eyes.

"You're not surprised."

Daniel looked away.

Victoria stepped forward.

"Elena, this is becoming ridiculous."

I turned toward her.

"No."

My voice was calm.

"This is the first honest moment we've had."

She didn't respond.

Because she knew.

Everyone in that room knew.

The divorce papers.

The money.

The demand for my child.

None of it was random.

Someone had planned this.

Someone wanted me removed.

Sarah walked closer.

She looked at Leo.

Then at me.

"Congratulations."

The words surprised me.

After everything.

After the fear.

After the betrayal.

She still smiled slightly.

"He looks like you."

I looked down at my son.

"He has your strength."

I looked back at her.

"What happened, Sarah?"

Her smile disappeared.

"I found the connection."

"Between what?"

She looked at Daniel.

The answer came before she spoke.

"Your husband."

The room felt colder.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"No."

Sarah didn't look away.

"Three years ago, Commander Ward discovered someone inside the military was moving information."

She paused.

"He thought the leak was connected to a civilian network."

My stomach tightened.

"And?"

Sarah looked at me.

"He was wrong."

Nobody moved.

"He discovered the person wasn't outside the system."

My heartbeat increased.

"He discovered the person was closer."

I stared at her.

"Closer how?"

Sarah looked at Daniel.

And this time, Daniel looked afraid.

"Elena..."

I ignored him.

"Answer me."

Sarah took a breath.

"Commander Ward believed someone close to him was involved."

My mind raced.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Someone who knew military operations.

Someone who had access.

I looked at Daniel.

The man I had married.

The man who knew my schedule.

The man who knew when I was away.

The man who knew exactly how to make me look weak.

"No."

The word escaped my mouth.

Not because I believed him.

Because I wanted to.

Daniel stepped toward me.

"Elena, listen to me."

I raised my hand.

He stopped.

"How did you know I was here?"

He froze.

A simple question.

But he had no answer.

The room became silent.

Then the captain's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed within seconds.

"Understood."

He ended the call.

I looked at him.

"What?"

He hesitated.

Then he spoke.

"We have a security issue."

My eyes narrowed.

"What kind of issue?"

"The hospital records were accessed."

I looked at Leo.

My heart dropped.

"Someone accessed my son's records?"

The captain nodded.

"Yes."

"Who?"

He looked at the screen.

Then at me.

"The request came from an authorized account."

I felt cold.

"Whose account?"

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone already knew.

The captain slowly said:

"Colonel Carter..."

I waited.

"Your husband's."

Daniel stepped back.

"No."

Nobody believed him.

Not even himself.

Victoria looked at her son.

"What did you do?"

Daniel's face changed.

For the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Real fear.

Sarah moved closer to me.

"Elena, you need to leave."

I looked at her.

"Why?"

Her eyes moved toward the hospital hallway.

"Because whoever did this knows you're awake."

The lights above us suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire hospital floor went dark.

The emergency lights turned red.

The officers immediately moved.

The captain reached for his weapon.

Everyone froze.

Then my phone vibrated.

A new message appeared.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

"Your husband was never the person you should have been watching."

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

A photograph.

Not of Daniel.

Not of Commander Ward.

Of me.

Taken inside this hospital room.

Minutes ago.

Someone had been standing outside my door.

May you like

Watching me hold my son.

And beneath the photograph was a name I never expected to see again...
