The Colonel They Never Knew / Chapter 2 / 7

Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind My Uniform

The phone screen glowed in my hand.

Three words.

"Your cover is..."

I stared at the message.

The hospital room suddenly felt smaller.

For months, I had worked hard to keep my military identity hidden.

Not because I was ashamed.

Because I wanted a life where people saw me as Elena.

Not Colonel Carter.

Not the officer who gave orders.

Not the woman who had spent years walking into dangerous situations and coming back alive.

Just Elena.

A wife.

A mother.

A woman holding her newborn son.

But now everything was collapsing.

Victoria noticed the change in my expression.

"What was that?"

I locked my phone.

"Nothing."

Her eyes narrowed.

She had always been good at reading people.

Unfortunately for her, she had spent years reading the wrong person.

She thought she knew me.

She thought I was quiet because I was weak.

She thought I avoided arguments because I couldn't fight back.

She never understood that silence was something I learned from the battlefield.

The most dangerous people were rarely the loudest ones.

Richard stepped closer.

"What exactly is that card?"

His voice had changed.

A few minutes earlier, he had been speaking to me like a child.

Now he sounded uncertain.

I looked at him.

"You really don't know?"

He didn't answer.

That told me everything.

Daniel looked between us.

"Elena, what is going on?"

I turned toward my husband.

That question almost hurt more than the divorce papers.

Because Daniel wasn't angry.

He was confused.

Like he was discovering his own wife for the first time.

"You never asked."

He frowned.

"Asked what?"

"What I actually did."

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Because he knew I was right.

For years, Daniel had accepted the simple explanation.

Elena worked for the government.

Elena had unusual hours.

Elena traveled sometimes.

Elena couldn't talk about certain things.

But he never pushed.

He never wondered why I came home from "business trips" with bruises I couldn't explain.

He never asked why I woke up from nightmares speaking military codes.

He never asked why I always sat facing the door in restaurants.

He never asked because he didn't want to know.

Or maybe because he liked the version of me that needed him.

Victoria laughed softly.

"This is ridiculous."

She looked at Richard.

"She's trying to scare us."

I watched her.

The confidence was still there.

She still believed she controlled the room.

"You think this is a trick?"

I asked.

She smiled.

"I know exactly who you are, Elena."

I looked at her.

"No."

I slowly shook my head.

"You know who I allowed you to see."

The room became silent.

The newborn monitor continued its quiet rhythm.

Leo slept peacefully.

He had no idea his entire future was being discussed by people standing around his hospital bed.

I looked down at him.

And something inside me hardened.

Nobody was taking my son.

Nobody.

Not after everything I had given.

Not after everything I had survived.

Richard reached for the identification card.

I moved faster.

My hand closed around it before his fingers touched it.

He froze.

It was a small movement.

Almost nothing.

But his expression changed.

Because he realized something.

The woman he thought was helpless had just reacted faster than him.

Victoria noticed too.

"What are you?"

The question came out quieter than she expected.

I looked at her.

"I already told you."

She stared.

"You never told us anything."

I placed the card back beside me.

"I told you I worked for the government."

Richard's face tightened.

"That isn't a normal government job."

"No."

I looked directly at him.

"It wasn't."

The door opened.

Everyone turned.

A nurse stepped inside.

"I'm sorry, but there are several officers here asking for Colonel Carter."

Nobody spoke.

Not one person.

The nurse looked around.

"Colonel Carter?"

Victoria slowly turned toward me.

Her face had lost its confidence.

Daniel looked shocked.

"Colonel?"

The word sounded strange coming from him.

Like he had never imagined it belonged next to my name.

I didn't answer immediately.

I looked at my son.

Then I looked back at them.

"Yes."

The nurse stepped aside.

Three Army officers entered the room.

Their uniforms were formal.

Their expressions serious.

The first officer stopped beside the bed.

"Colonel Carter."

I nodded.

"Captain."

Victoria took a step backward.

Richard looked uncomfortable.

Daniel looked like he had been hit.

Because suddenly, the woman he had been trying to divorce wasn't the woman he thought she was.

The captain looked at the papers on my bed.

His expression changed.

"Is there a problem?"

Nobody answered.

Victoria quickly stepped forward.

"This is a family matter."

The captain looked at her.

Then at the divorce documents.

Then at me.

"Colonel?"

I knew what he was asking.

Should he intervene?

Should he report this?

Should he protect me?

I had faced gunfire with less tension than this moment.

Because bullets were simple.

People were complicated.

I took a breath.

"Not yet."

The captain nodded.

He understood.

That was why I trusted my team.

They knew when to act.

And when to wait.

Victoria looked confused.

"You can't use your position to intimidate us."

I almost smiled.

Because she still didn't understand.

I wasn't using my position.

I was trying not to.

"I don't need my rank to prove I'm Leo's mother."

My voice stayed calm.

"I only need the truth."

Daniel finally spoke.

"Elena..."

I looked at him.

His face was different now.

The arrogance was gone.

"Did you know about this?"

I asked.

He swallowed.

"Your military status?"

"No."

I shook my head.

"The divorce."

Silence.

That was all I needed.

His silence answered for him.

I looked away.

The pain was still there.

Even after everything.

Even after the revelation.

Because betrayal from strangers was expected.

Betrayal from someone you loved was different.

It reached places armor couldn't protect.

The captain's phone suddenly vibrated.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

"Colonel."

I looked at him.

"What happened?"

He hesitated.

That was unusual.

My officers did not hesitate.

Not unless the information was serious.

"There's been a development."

"What kind?"

He looked at Daniel.

Then at Victoria.

Then back at me.

"Something connected to your husband."

My heart stopped for half a second.

Daniel immediately looked nervous.

"What does that mean?"

The captain didn't answer him.

He only handed me the phone.

A single file was open.

A photograph.

Daniel.

Standing beside someone I had never seen before.

And underneath the image was a classified note.

I read the first line.

My hands went cold.

Because the person standing next to my husband was someone I had spent three years trying to find.

Someone who was supposed to be dead.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

May you like

Then the hospital room door slowly opened again.

And the person standing outside whispered my name...
