Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

A woman stood behind a locked door holding an old photograph: "Adrian, you were looking for the wrong person."
When mafia boss Adrian Cole opened the hidden room, he discovered a woman connected to his father’s final secret.
Four words were written on the back of the photograph:
"She never died."
Adrian suddenly realized the truth he feared most was impossible to ignore.
The door opened slowly.
Adrian raised his weapon immediately.
Claire stepped behind him.
Neither of them moved.
Because the person standing in the doorway was someone Adrian had spent fifteen years believing was gone forever.
His mother.
But she looked different.
Older.
Calmer.
Not afraid.
Not surprised.
Almost like she had been waiting for this exact moment.
Adrian stared at her.
His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.
"You’re dead."
The woman looked at him.
"No."
Her voice was steady.
"I wanted everyone to believe I was."
The words hit harder than any threat Adrian had ever received.
Claire covered her mouth.
Because she understood before Adrian did.
This was not a ghost from the past.
This was someone who had been hiding.
Someone who had allowed him to believe a lie.
For fifteen years.
Adrian lowered his weapon slightly.
"Why?"
His mother looked at the room around them.
The photographs.
The documents.
The camera.
The evidence Emily had collected.
"Because your father was right."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
"My father?"
She nodded.
"He knew the truth was going to destroy everything."
Adrian stepped forward.
"You knew?"
His mother looked at him.
"Yes."
The answer was simple.
Too simple.
Adrian felt anger building inside him.
"You knew my father was alive?"
"No."
"Then what did you know?"
She looked away.
"That he was killed by someone inside the family."
The room became silent.
Adrian had spent years imagining his father’s final moments.
He imagined enemies.
Rivals.
Strangers.
Never family.
Never someone sitting at his dinner table.
Never someone he trusted.
"Who?"
His mother looked at him.
"I can't tell you."
Adrian laughed quietly.
After everything.
After fifteen years.
After Emily disappeared.
After finding hidden rooms and secret messages.
His own mother still refused to tell him.
"You don't get to protect me anymore."
Her expression changed.
For the first time, Adrian saw something in her eyes.
Fear.
"Adrian, you don't understand."
"Then explain."
She stepped inside the room.
She looked at the photograph on the desk.
The one Emily had left behind.
"Your wife discovered something your father spent years trying to hide."
Adrian immediately reacted.
"What?"
"That your family's empire was never built only on business."
She walked toward the wall filled with documents.
"It was built on secrets."
Adrian looked at Claire.
Claire avoided his eyes.
And that made him angry.
"You knew too."
Claire said nothing.
"Everyone knew except me."
His mother looked at him.
"Because you were the one person we were trying to protect."
Adrian shook his head.
"No."
His voice became colder.
"You were protecting the lie."
His mother didn't deny it.
That hurt more.
Then Adrian noticed something.
A folder on the desk.
Different from the others.
Newer.
He picked it up.
The label was handwritten.
"Emily."
His heart tightened.
He opened it.
Inside were pages of notes.
Emily’s handwriting.
Dates.
Locations.
Names.
And one sentence written at the top:
"Adrian will only believe the truth when he sees who helped hide it."
Adrian read every page.
Emily had been investigating for months.
She had tracked payments.
Private meetings.
Missing files.
She had followed people connected to Adrian's father.
But one name appeared again and again.
The same person.
The person who approved every secret transaction.
The person who had access to every family account.
The person who was closest to Adrian.
His mother watched him.
"She found out."
Adrian looked up.
"What?"
"Emily found the person responsible."
His fingers tightened around the papers.
"Who?"
His mother looked at the door.
"She was going to tell you."
"When?"
"Tonight."
Adrian froze.
The Christmas party.
The proposal.
The humiliation.
The moment Emily walked away.
It wasn't random.
She had planned to disappear after making sure he finally looked for the truth.
He remembered the envelope.
The notebook.
The messages.
Everything had been leading here.
But one question remained.
Where was Emily now?
Adrian turned to his mother.
"Where is my wife?"
She hesitated.
That hesitation immediately told him something was wrong.
"Where is she?"
His mother looked down.
"I don't know."
Adrian stepped closer.
"You know something."
"I know she was followed."
The words made him stop.
"By who?"
His mother didn't answer.
"Who followed her?"
Before she could respond, the lights in the house suddenly flickered.
Everyone turned.
A sound came from outside.
A car.
Stopping.
Adrian moved toward the window.
A black vehicle was parked near the old house.
Someone stepped out.
A man.
Tall.
Wearing a dark coat.
Walking toward the entrance.
Claire looked through the window.
Her face changed.
Adrian noticed.
"Who is that?"
Claire whispered.
"No..."
Adrian turned.
"Claire."
She looked terrified.
"That's impossible."
The man reached the front door.
Slowly.
Confidently.
Like he owned the place.
Adrian moved toward the entrance.
His mother grabbed his arm.
"Don't open that door."
He looked at her.
"Why?"
Her voice became quiet.
"Because the person outside is the reason your father died."
Adrian froze.
The door handle moved.
Once.
Twice.
Someone on the other side knocked.
Three slow knocks.
Then Adrian heard a voice.
A voice he recognized.
A voice that should not exist.
"Adrian."
May you like
The door unlocked from the outside.
Someone was standing there who had been buried fifteen years ago.
