Chapter 3 - The Door That Held the Truth

A man stood outside an abandoned house holding a photograph: "Adrian, you were never supposed to find this place."
When mafia boss Adrian Cole followed the location from Emily’s message, he discovered a rusted key hidden inside the old photograph frame.
Four numbers were engraved on the key:
"1225"
Adrian suddenly realized the date was not a coincidence.
The photograph shook slightly in Adrian’s hand.
December 25th.
Christmas Day.
The same date his father died.
The same date his family told him everything changed.
For fifteen years, Adrian had believed that night was a tragedy.
An accident.
A robbery gone wrong.
That was the story everyone repeated.
His mother.
His uncle.
The people who worked for his father.
Everyone.
But now Emily had uncovered something different.
Something she believed was important enough to disappear with their unborn child.
Adrian looked at the picture again.
Emily was standing in front of an old abandoned house.
The house looked nothing like the luxurious mansion where they lived.
The walls were damaged.
The windows were covered.
The place looked forgotten.
But Adrian recognized it.
Because he had seen it once before.
When he was sixteen.
The night his father died.
"This is impossible," Adrian whispered.
Claire stood beside him, watching his reaction.
"You know this place."
Adrian didn’t answer.
He remembered the night clearly.
His father had received a phone call during Christmas dinner.
A phone call that changed everything.
Minutes later, armed men arrived.
His father told Adrian and his mother to leave through the back door.
He remembered his father’s final words.
"Protect your family."
Then he never saw him again.
The official story was simple.
His father was killed during an attack.
But Adrian had spent years wondering why no one ever found the people responsible.
Why there were no names.
No evidence.
No revenge.
Just silence.
And now Emily had led him back to the beginning.
Claire looked at the photograph.
"She found this here."
Adrian turned sharply.
"You came here with her?"
Claire hesitated.
"Yes."
"When?"
"Two weeks ago."
Adrian stared at her.
"Two weeks?"
Claire looked down.
"I tried to stop her."
"Why?"
"Because I knew what she would find."
The words made Adrian freeze.
"What did she find?"
Claire didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she walked toward the old house.
The front door was locked.
The paint was peeling.
The entire place looked like no one had entered for years.
But Claire reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small key.
Adrian stared.
"Where did you get that?"
"Emily gave it to me."
"When?"
"The night before the Christmas party."
Adrian’s expression hardened.
"You knew she planned to leave."
Claire looked at him.
"I knew she planned to survive."
That sentence stayed between them.
Because Adrian understood.
Emily had never been trying to hurt him.
She had been protecting herself.
And maybe protecting their child.
Claire inserted the key into the lock.
The door opened.
Slowly.
Inside was darkness.
The air smelled old.
Dust covered the furniture.
But someone had been there recently.
Adrian noticed immediately.
A fresh cup of coffee sat on the table.
A blanket was folded neatly on a chair.
And on the wall were photographs.
Hundreds of them.
Adrian walked closer.
His heart started beating faster.
Every photograph showed his family.
His father.
His mother.
His childhood.
Moments Adrian thought belonged only to him.
But there was something wrong.
Someone had been watching them.
Recording them.
Studying them.
Claire picked up one photograph.
It showed Adrian as a teenager standing beside his father.
On the back, there was handwriting.
His father’s handwriting.
Adrian recognized it instantly.
"Never trust the person closest to you."
His fingers tightened around the photo.
"My father wrote this?"
Claire nodded.
"Emily found hundreds of these."
"Why didn't she tell me?"
Claire looked at him.
"Because she wasn't sure if you were ready to hear it."
Adrian almost laughed.
Ready?
He had spent his entire life preparing for enemies.
Preparing for betrayal.
Preparing for war.
But somehow, the one person who knew the truth was his pregnant wife.
The woman he had humiliated in front of everyone.
He walked deeper into the house.
At the end of the hallway was a locked room.
The door was different from the others.
Newer.
Stronger.
Adrian touched the handle.
"What's inside?"
Claire looked nervous.
"I don't know."
"You brought me here and you don't know?"
"Emily never opened it."
Adrian looked at her.
"Why?"
Claire swallowed.
"Because she said the person who locked it wanted someone specific to open it."
Adrian stared at the door.
"And who is that?"
Claire looked at him.
"You."
For a moment, Adrian said nothing.
Then he reached into his pocket.
The key from the photograph frame.
The numbers.
He inserted it.
The lock clicked.
The door opened slightly.
Adrian stopped.
Because something inside the room moved.
Someone was there.
He slowly pushed the door open.
Inside was a small room.
A desk.
A chair.
A wall filled with documents.
And in the center of the room was a video camera.
Still recording.
Adrian walked closer.
The screen showed a paused image.
Emily.
She was sitting in the chair.
Wearing the same white dress from the Christmas party.
But she looked different.
Not broken.
Not defeated.
Determined.
Adrian pressed play.
Emily appeared on the screen.
For a few seconds, she said nothing.
Then she looked directly into the camera.
"Adrian."
His entire body froze.
"If you're watching this, it means I was right."
He stepped closer.
Emily continued.
"You were never the person I was afraid of."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
"Then who?"
Emily looked down for a moment.
"I was afraid you would choose them over me."
The video continued.
"I spent months trying to find proof. I needed to know if the rumors were true."
A file appeared on the screen.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Adrian recognized some of them.
People connected to his organization.
People who had worked for his father.
Emily continued.
"Your father didn't die because of an enemy."
Adrian stopped breathing.
The room felt smaller.
"The person who destroyed your family was someone who was sitting at your dinner table."
The video suddenly glitched.
The screen went black.
Adrian looked at the camera.
"No."
He hit the side.
Nothing.
Then a sound came from behind him.
A phone vibrating.
Not his.
Not Claire’s.
Another phone.
Hidden inside the room.
Adrian followed the sound.
Behind a stack of documents was a small black phone.
The screen was already unlocked.
One message appeared.
From Emily.
His hands trembled as he opened it.
Only one sentence was there.
"Adrian, if you found this room, then you already know who to look for."
A second message arrived.
Then a name appeared.
A name Adrian had trusted his entire life.
May you like
The door behind him suddenly closed.
And the person standing outside whispered his name.
