Chapter 4 - The Name Hidden In The Dark

A man stood inside a locked room holding an old phone: "Adrian, you were never supposed to see this."

When mafia boss Adrian Cole answered the hidden phone, he discovered a recorded message from his dead father.

Three words appeared on the screen:

"Trust no one."

Adrian suddenly realized his father’s death was never an accident.

The room became silent.

The only sound was the old phone playing static through its damaged speaker.

Adrian stared at the screen.

The message was impossible.

His father had been dead for fifteen years.

There was no reason his voice should exist.

No reason a phone hidden inside an abandoned house should contain anything connected to him.

But Adrian knew that voice.

He knew every pause.

Every breath.

Every way his father spoke when he was hiding something.

The recording started again.

"Adrian."

A younger version of his father’s voice filled the room.

"If you are hearing this, then someone failed to keep you away from the truth."

Adrian stepped closer.

Claire stood behind him, frozen.

Neither of them spoke.

The recording continued.

"I need you to understand something."

A pause.

"The enemy was never outside this family."

Adrian felt his chest tighten.

Those words.

The same warning written on the back of the photograph.

The same warning Emily had left behind.

His father knew.

He had known something was wrong.

And he had spent his final moments trying to hide the truth.

The recording continued.

"There is one person you should never trust."

The audio suddenly became distorted.

Adrian looked at the phone.

"Come on."

He hit the screen.

The recording stopped.

A notification appeared.

One file remained.

"FINAL_MESSAGE."

Adrian pressed it.

The screen went black.

Then a video appeared.

His father was sitting in the same room.

The same room where Adrian was standing now.

Older.

Tired.

Afraid.

Adrian had never seen his father look afraid.

Not once.

His father looked directly into the camera.

"Adrian, if you found this, then Emily was right."

Adrian froze.

Claire looked at him.

"What did he say?"

Adrian didn't answer.

The video continued.

"Your wife discovered the same thing I did."

His father looked away.

"But she made the mistake I made."

Adrian leaned closer.

"What mistake?"

The video continued.

"She trusted someone because she believed love was stronger than betrayal."

The screen flickered.

Then his father said one final sentence.

"The person who destroyed this family is the person who raised you."

The video ended.

Adrian stood completely still.

Because only one person came to his mind.

His mother.

For years, he had remembered her as the woman who protected him.

The woman who held his hand after his father disappeared.

The woman who told him to become stronger.

The woman who taught him how to survive.

But now every memory felt different.

Every conversation.

Every decision.

Every warning.

He looked at Claire.

"Did Emily know?"

Claire hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Adrian’s voice became colder.

"Did she know about my mother?"

Claire looked away.

"Yes."

"How long?"

"Months."

Adrian stepped back.

"Months?"

Claire nodded slowly.

"She found documents."

"What documents?"

"Your father's private records."

Adrian laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because he couldn't believe it.

"My wife knew my family was lying to me, and she said nothing?"

Claire looked at him.

"She tried."

"When?"

"Many times."

Adrian looked down.

He remembered.

The conversations.

The questions Emily asked.

The nights she wanted to talk.

The moments he dismissed her because he was too busy.

Too powerful.

Too certain he knew everything.

He remembered her saying:

"Adrian, what if the people protecting you are the ones hurting you?"

At the time, he thought she was scared.

Now he realized she was warning him.

A sound came from outside the room.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Controlled.

Someone was approaching.

Claire immediately looked toward the door.

"Adrian."

He turned.

"Someone followed us."

Adrian moved instinctively.

Years of survival took over.

He reached inside his jacket.

But before he could open the door, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Silence.

Then a woman's voice.

A voice he knew.

"Adrian."

His entire body stopped.

Because the voice belonged to someone who should never have been able to call him.

"Mom?"

Claire looked at him.

The voice continued.

"You opened the room."

Adrian stared at the door.

"Where are you?"

A quiet laugh came from the phone.

Not nervous.

Not afraid.

Confident.

"Still asking the wrong question."

Adrian tightened his grip.

"What does that mean?"

His mother answered.

"It means you should be asking why Emily wanted you to find this."

The call ended.

Adrian lowered the phone.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he noticed something.

The camera inside the room.

The one that had recorded Emily.

The red light was still on.

Someone had been watching.

Not in the past.

Right now.

Adrian walked toward the camera.

He turned it around.

Behind the camera was a small engraving.

A symbol.

A symbol he had seen his entire life.

His family's private mark.

But underneath it was something new.

A second name.

A name carved into the metal.

Adrian touched it.

His face changed.

Because the name was not his mother's.

It was not his father's.

It was Emily’s.

Claire stepped closer.

"Adrian..."

Before she finished speaking, the lights in the room suddenly turned off.

The old house went completely dark.

Then Adrian’s phone received one final message.

A photograph appeared.

Emily.

Standing in front of another door.

And behind her was the person Adrian thought had been dead for fifteen years.

May you like

The door opened slowly from the other side.

Someone whispered Adrian’s name.
