Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Stopped My Wedding

A little girl grabbed my tuxedo jacket outside the church, crying: "Please don't leave me with her!" When I arrived at my wedding ceremony, I discovered a small white flower basket hidden inside the girl's hands. But three words were written underneath the basket: "She knows everything." I suddenly realized this wedding was never what it seemed.

I had imagined my wedding day a thousand times.

I imagined walking toward the altar alone, hearing the soft music, seeing the woman I loved waiting for me with tears of happiness in her eyes.

I imagined my friends smiling.

I imagined my family cheering.

I imagined a future beginning with one simple promise.

But I never imagined carrying a frightened little girl in my arms while my bride stood in front of me looking like she had just seen a ghost.

My name is Daniel Carter, and five minutes before I was supposed to say "I do," my entire life changed.

The little girl was not supposed to be there.

Nobody had invited her.

Nobody wanted to explain who she was.

And somehow, she was holding onto me like I was the only person in the world who could protect her.

The first time I saw her, she was standing near the church entrance wearing a pink dress and holding a tiny white flower basket.

Her eyes were filled with fear.

Not the kind of fear a child feels when she gets lost.

It was deeper.

The kind of fear that comes from knowing something is wrong but being too young to understand why.

I had stepped away from the altar for a moment because I noticed the guests becoming unusually quiet.

Then I heard her small voice.

"Please don't leave me with her."

I turned around.

The little girl looked directly at me.

Not at my bride.

Not at the people around her.

At me.

I walked toward her slowly and knelt down.

"Hey, what's your name?" I asked.

She didn't answer.

Instead, she looked behind me toward the altar.

Toward my bride, Emily.

Emily was standing perfectly still.

Her white wedding dress looked flawless.

Her makeup was perfect.

Her smile was gone.

I had known Emily for four years.

I knew every expression on her face.

I knew when she was happy.

I knew when she was nervous.

And I knew when she was hiding something.

That was the expression she had right now.

Fear.

"Daniel," Emily said quietly. "Please bring her outside. We need to talk."

The way she said it made my heart tighten.

Not because she sounded angry.

Because she sounded desperate.

I looked at the girl again.

She was holding a small basket filled with flowers.

Something about it bothered me.

The basket looked old.

Not like a decoration for a wedding.

Like something that had been kept hidden for years.

I gently picked her up.

She immediately wrapped her arms around my neck.

The entire church became silent.

Everyone was watching.

My best friend Mark looked away.

My aunt lowered her eyes.

Even Emily's parents looked uncomfortable.

That was the moment I knew.

They all knew something.

And I was the only person who didn't.

I carried the girl back toward the altar.

Emily took one step forward.

"Daniel, listen to me."

I stopped.

The little girl tightened her arms around me.

"Who is she?" I asked.

Emily opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That scared me more than any answer could have.

Because Emily had always been honest with me.

At least, I thought she had.

"Her name is Lily," Emily finally whispered.

"Lily who?"

Emily looked down.

"Lily Carter."

The church went completely silent.

My last name.

The same last name I carried.

The same last name I had planned to give Emily after we married.

I stared at the little girl.

She looked back at me.

"Do I know you?" I asked softly.

She nodded.

Then she said something that made every person around us freeze.

"Mommy said you would forget me."

My entire body went cold.

"Mommy?"

I looked at Emily.

Her face changed.

She wasn't just scared anymore.

She was broken.

I lowered the girl carefully.

"Lily, who is your mother?"

The child looked at Emily.

Then she looked at me.

"She told me never to say her name until you found the picture."

My eyes moved toward the flower basket in her hands.

"The picture?"

Lily nodded.

She slowly reached inside the basket.

The guests started whispering.

Emily stepped forward.

"No."

It was the first time I had heard panic in her voice.

"No, Lily. Don't."

But the little girl had already pulled something out.

An old photograph.

The edges were damaged.

The image was faded.

I took it from her small hands.

At first, I didn't understand what I was seeing.

Then I looked closer.

The photograph showed me.

Eight years earlier.

Before I met Emily.

Before I thought I knew my own story.

And standing beside me in the photograph was a woman I had been told was gone forever.

My hands started shaking.

Because I knew that woman.

I had spent years believing she was dead.

Her name was Sarah.

My first love.

The woman I had lost after a terrible accident.

The woman everyone told me I would never see again.

But she was alive in that picture.

And she was holding a baby.

A baby who looked exactly like Lily.

I looked at Emily.

She couldn't hide it anymore.

"You knew," I said.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Daniel..."

"You knew about Sarah?"

Nobody answered.

The silence was enough.

I turned the photograph around.

Something was written on the back.

A message.

Only one sentence.

My hands froze as I read it.

"Daniel, if you are seeing this, it means they failed to keep you away from your daughter."

I looked at Lily.

My daughter.

The word felt impossible.

But somehow, it felt familiar.

Like a missing piece of my life had suddenly returned.

I looked around the church.

The people I trusted most were standing there.

Watching me discover the truth on my wedding day.

A wedding day that suddenly felt like a carefully prepared trap.

"Who is Sarah?" I asked.

Emily started crying.

"Daniel, I can explain."

"No."

My voice was calmer than I expected.

"Not anymore."

I looked at the photograph again.

There was something else.

A date written beneath the message.

A date from nine years ago.

A date that made no sense.

Because Sarah had supposedly disappeared eight years ago.

My mind raced.

Someone had lied to me.

Someone had built my entire life on a false story.

Then the church doors slowly opened behind us.

Everyone turned.

A woman stepped inside.

A woman I recognized immediately.

A woman I had buried in my memory years ago.

Emily covered her mouth.

My aunt stepped backward.

And Lily whispered:

"Mommy..."

I turned toward the woman standing at the entrance.

She looked directly at me.

Then she said my name.

"Daniel..."

She took one step forward.

"The truth is, you never lost me."

I reached for the photograph in my hand.

May you like

But before I could ask another question, she walked closer and revealed the one thing that changed everything...

The door behind her was already closing. Someone had locked us inside.
