Chapter 6 - The Man Who Returned From The Grave
A man stood inside the old mansion holding a photograph: "I watched your father die, Adrian. But I never watched him leave."
When mafia boss Adrian Cole opened the hidden file, he discovered a confession recorded fifteen years earlier.
Four words were written at the bottom of the page:
"Your father survived."
Adrian suddenly realized the biggest lie of his life had never been about his mother.
The man outside the door stepped into the room.
The light from the hallway revealed his face.
Adrian forgot how to breathe.
Because he knew him.
Not from a photograph.
Not from a memory.
From a nightmare he had carried since childhood.
His father.
Richard Cole.
The man who was supposed to be dead.
The man whose funeral Adrian attended fifteen years ago.
The man whose absence shaped every decision Adrian made.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Claire stared at Richard like she had seen a ghost.
Adrian’s mother closed her eyes.
Like she had been waiting for this moment.
But Adrian felt something else.
Betrayal.
Not confusion.
Not happiness.
Betrayal.
Because everyone knew.
Everyone except him.
Richard looked at his son.
The powerful mafia boss.
The man Adrian had become.
And for the first time in fifteen years, father and son stood in the same room again.
"You're older."
Adrian’s expression remained cold.
"That's all you have to say?"
Richard looked down.
"I knew you would hate me."
Adrian laughed quietly.
"Hate you?"
He stepped closer.
"You let me believe you were dead."
Richard said nothing.
"You let me bury you."
Still nothing.
"You let me spend fifteen years trying to become the man you wanted me to be."
Richard looked at him.
"I didn't want that."
Adrian’s eyes hardened.
"Then why did you disappear?"
The room became silent.
Richard looked toward the documents scattered across the desk.
Then toward the camera.
Then toward Emily’s files.
"Because I found out who killed me."
Adrian froze.
Richard continued.
"And I knew if I stayed alive, you would become the next target."
Adrian shook his head.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I expect you to understand."
"No."
Adrian pointed toward the door.
"I spent fifteen years believing I lost my father."
His voice became quieter.
"But you didn't lose me."
Richard looked at him.
"You lost yourself."
Those words hurt because Adrian knew there was truth behind them.
He had spent years building an empire.
Creating fear.
Removing threats.
Becoming exactly what his enemies expected.
But somewhere along the way, he stopped being the man Emily loved.
Richard walked toward the desk.
He picked up Emily’s notebook.
"She was smarter than all of us."
Adrian immediately reacted.
"Where is she?"
Richard looked at him.
"She’s safe."
"Where?"
"I can't tell you."
Adrian’s anger returned.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
Richard looked at his son.
"Because everyone knows something you don't."
"Then tell me."
Richard placed the notebook down.
"Emily didn't leave because of your proposal."
Adrian stopped.
Richard continued.
"She left because she found proof that Vanessa was never the real problem."
Adrian frowned.
"What does Vanessa have to do with this?"
Richard looked at him.
"Nothing."
That answer confused him.
"Then why did she appear in my life?"
Richard stared at him.
"Because someone wanted you distracted."
The room went quiet.
Adrian remembered.
The timing.
The sudden relationship.
The public proposal.
The attention.
Everything had happened so quickly.
Too quickly.
He had assumed Vanessa was a betrayal.
But maybe she was a distraction.
Someone wanted him looking in one direction.
While the truth was hidden somewhere else.
Claire finally spoke.
"Richard."
Everyone turned.
She looked nervous.
"There is something he needs to know."
Richard looked at her.
"No."
"He's already found out too much."
Richard’s face changed.
"Claire."
But she continued.
"Adrian deserves the truth."
Adrian looked between them.
"What truth?"
Claire took a deep breath.
"Emily wasn't only investigating your family."
Adrian waited.
"She was investigating your birth."
The room became completely silent.
Adrian stared.
"What?"
Claire looked uncomfortable.
"Your father wasn't the only person hiding something."
Richard closed his eyes.
Because he knew this moment had arrived.
Adrian turned toward him.
"What is she talking about?"
Richard didn't answer.
"Father."
The word sounded strange after fifteen years.
Richard looked at him.
"Adrian..."
"No."
His voice became sharp.
"You don't get to disappear for fifteen years and start protecting me again."
Richard lowered his head.
"The truth is complicated."
"Then make it simple."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Who am I?"
Nobody answered.
And that silence told him more than words.
His phone suddenly vibrated.
Everyone looked.
A message.
From Emily.
Adrian opened it immediately.
One sentence.
"Don't trust the man who came back."
His face changed.
Richard noticed.
"What did she say?"
Adrian slowly turned the phone around.
Richard read the message.
And for the first time since entering the room, Richard looked afraid.
"She knows."
Adrian stared.
"Knows what?"
Richard didn't answer.
Another message arrived.
This time with a photograph.
Adrian opened it.
It showed Emily sitting inside a car.
She looked scared.
But she was not alone.
Someone was sitting beside her.
Someone whose face was hidden.
Under the photograph was a sentence.
"Ask your father why Emily found his second family."
Adrian looked at Richard.
His father had gone completely pale.
Because he knew exactly who was sitting beside Emily.
And he knew Adrian was about to discover the truth he had buried for fifteen years.
Richard stepped toward the phone.
"Adrian, whatever you do..."
He stopped.
Because behind Adrian, the hidden room door slowly opened by itself.
