Chapter 8 - The Final Move Of The Broken King

Marco Duca had spent his entire life learning one important lesson.

People were predictable.

Give them fear, and they would obey.

Give them ambition, and they would betray.

Give them enough information, and they would destroy each other without needing to be pushed.

That was how Marco built his power.

Not through loyalty.

Not through respect.

Through understanding weakness.

But there was one thing he had failed to understand.

Some people became stronger after losing everything.

And Elena Moretti had lost everything.

Her wedding.

Her future.

Her trust.

Her belief that the people closest to her would protect her.

Yet somehow, instead of breaking, she had become the one person Marco could no longer control.

That was the thought running through his mind as he sat inside an abandoned office building on the edge of the city.

The same city that once whispered his name with respect.

Now whispered it with suspicion.

His phone continued ringing.

One by one, his allies stopped answering.

Accounts were frozen.

Meetings were canceled.

People who had once begged for his attention suddenly disappeared.

Marco stared at the empty room around him.

He hated this feeling.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Powerlessness.

But unlike other people, Marco did not collapse when he lost control.

He adapted.

He looked at the folder on the table.

The final piece.

The Moretti archives.

Years of secrets.

Years of agreements.

Years of information powerful enough to destroy families, governments, and corporations.

With those files, he could rebuild.

He could create new alliances.

He could force everyone who abandoned him to return.

And most importantly...

He could destroy Adrien Volkov.

Marco smiled.

Because he still had one advantage.

Nobody knew where he was.

Inside Adrien Volkov’s estate, Elena stood in front of a large table covered with documents.

The Moretti archives.

The same files Marco was trying to steal.

Every page represented years of history.

Some good.

Some painful.

Some secrets Elena had never known existed.

Her father stood beside her, looking through old records.

“This should have been destroyed years ago.”

Elena looked at him.

“Why?”

Cassian Moretti hesitated.

“Because power creates enemies.”

He touched one of the documents.

“And secrets create wars.”

Adrien stood across from them.

“We cannot move everything at once.”

Luca nodded.

“Marco knows the archives exist. He will come for them.”

Elena looked at the files.

“What exactly is he looking for?”

Nobody answered immediately.

That silence told her everything.

“There is something.”

Cassian looked uncomfortable.

“Elena.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“I am done being protected from the truth.”

The room became quiet.

Because everyone understood.

The woman who once ran from the truth was gone.

Adrien looked at Cassian.

“Tell her.”

After a long moment, Cassian opened the folder.

Inside was a document from twenty years ago.

An agreement.

Signed by multiple families.

Elena read the names.

Moretti.

Volkov.

Duca.

Her eyes narrowed.

“This was before the conflict.”

“Yes,” Adrien said.

“The families were working together.”

Elena looked at him.

“Then why did everything fall apart?”

Cassian’s expression darkened.

“Because someone changed the agreement.”

He pointed at a section.

A hidden clause.

A financial transfer.

A secret payment.

Elena looked confused.

“Someone made it look like one family betrayed the others.”

Adrien nodded.

“And Marco discovered it.”

A cold feeling moved through her.

“So all these years...”

“Yes.”

Adrien’s voice became quiet.

“He used an old lie to create new hatred.”

Elena stared at the document.

Marco had not created chaos from nothing.

He had inherited it.

Studied it.

And turned it into a weapon.

“He spent years preparing this.”

Adrien looked at her.

“Yes.”

Elena slowly closed the folder.

“Then he is not running.”

“No.”

“He is trying to finish what he started.”

Adrien nodded.

That night, the plan was simple.

Move the archives.

Secure the evidence.

Find Marco before he made another move.

But everyone in their world knew one thing.

Simple plans rarely stayed simple.

The convoy left after midnight.

Three vehicles.

Security teams.

Encrypted communication.

Elena sat beside Adrien in the lead vehicle.

For several minutes, neither of them spoke.

The silence was different now.

Not uncomfortable.

Almost peaceful.

“You regret coming to my mansion?”

Adrien suddenly asked.

Elena looked at him.

“What?”

“That night.”

He looked ahead.

“When you had nowhere else to go.”

She thought about it.

The rain.

The guns.

The fear.

The moment she saw him at the top of the staircase.

“No.”

Adrien glanced at her.

“Why?”

“Because you believed me.”

A pause.

“You were the first person who did.”

Adrien looked away.

“You should not have had to run to an enemy for that.”

Elena smiled slightly.

“Maybe I needed an enemy who was honest.”

For the first time, Adrien almost smiled.

Almost.

Then his phone rang.

The expression disappeared immediately.

“Speak.”

A few seconds passed.

His face changed.

“What?”

Elena noticed.

“What happened?”

Adrien ended the call.

“Turn around.”

The driver immediately reacted.

“Why?”

“Because Marco knew where we were going.”

Elena’s heart tightened.

“How?”

Adrien looked at her.

“We have a leak.”

The convoy changed direction.

But it was too late.

A vehicle appeared behind them.

Then another.

Not attacking.

Following.

Watching.

Adrien’s security team prepared.

Elena looked through the window.

“This was a trap.”

“Yes.”

She looked at him.

“Then why did you come?”

Adrien’s eyes remained focused.

“Because Marco wanted us to know he could reach us.”

A pause.

“And because he made one mistake.”

“What?”

“He showed us where he was watching from.”

Thirty minutes later, they arrived at an abandoned industrial area.

Not because Marco forced them.

Because Adrien tracked the signal.

The warehouse stood empty.

Dark.

Silent.

The kind of place where secrets disappeared.

Adrien raised his hand.

Everyone stopped.

Elena stayed beside him.

Inside the warehouse, they found no guards.

No weapons.

No Marco.

Only one thing.

A large screen.

It turned on automatically.

Marco appeared.

Sitting calmly.

Almost like he was speaking from his office.

“Congratulations.”

His voice echoed.

“You found my hiding place.”

Elena stared at the screen.

“You ran.”

Marco smiled.

“No.”

A pause.

“I invited you.”

Adrien’s expression hardened.

“What do you want?”

Marco laughed softly.

“What I always wanted.”

The screen showed images.

Old documents.

Family records.

Private information.

“I want everyone to understand one thing.”

Marco leaned closer.

“I was never trying to destroy your families.”

Elena frowned.

“Then what were you doing?”

Marco smiled.

“I was replacing them.”

Silence.

“I spent years watching powerful people pretend they controlled the world.”

His voice became colder.

“But every empire has the same weakness.”

He looked directly at Elena.

“People.”

Elena felt anger rise.

“You used people.”

“Yes.”

Marco did not deny it.

“Because people are easier to control than armies.”

Adrien stepped closer to the screen.

“You are finished.”

Marco smiled.

“Am I?”

The screen changed.

A live video appeared.

A location.

A person.

Elena’s eyes widened.

“No.”

Because she recognized the place.

Her father’s private headquarters.

Marco had another move.

And this time...

He had someone trapped.

Adrien looked at Elena.

The answer was already clear.

Marco was not trying to escape.

He was forcing them into one final choice.

Save the archives.

Or save the people inside.

The screen went black.

And Marco’s final message appeared.

YOU CANNOT SAVE EVERYONE.

Elena stared at those words.

For the first time in days, fear returned.

Not for herself.

For the people she loved.

Adrien looked at her.

“Elena.”

She turned.

“We have to go.”

He nodded.

Because both of them understood.

This was no longer about revenge.

No longer about power.

No longer about winning.

It was about ending a war that had stolen too many lives.

And this time, Marco Duca had made the one mistake he never thought possible.

May you like

He had given Elena Moretti something stronger than anger.

A reason to fight.
