Chapter 7 - The Fall Of The Man Behind The War

Marco Duca had always believed he was the smartest person in every room.

It was the reason he survived.

The reason he climbed higher than everyone expected.

The reason he convinced powerful families to destroy each other while he stood safely in the shadows.

Marco never saw himself as a villain.

Villains were emotional.

Villains made mistakes.

Marco believed he was different.

He believed he was a strategist.

A man who understood human weakness.

But standing inside that private club, surrounded by people who no longer feared him, Marco finally felt something he had not experienced in years.

Uncertainty.

Because every part of his carefully designed plan had collapsed.

Elena was alive.

Adrien believed her.

Cassian knew the truth.

And the evidence that was supposed to disappear was now the weapon pointed directly at him.

But Marco Duca had not survived this long by giving up.

He looked at Elena.

The woman who was supposed to be dead.

The woman who had ruined everything by refusing to disappear.

“You really think this changes anything?”

His voice was calm again.

Too calm.

Elena recognized it immediately.

It was the same voice he used whenever he wanted someone to underestimate him.

But this time, she saw through it.

“You lost.”

Marco smiled slightly.

“No.”

He looked around the room.

“People like me don’t lose.”

Adrien stepped forward.

“Everyone loses eventually.”

Marco looked at him.

“You should know that better than anyone.”

The words carried weight.

Because Adrien understood what Marco was trying to do.

He was trying to provoke him.

Trying to reopen old wounds.

Trying to make him angry.

But Adrien had spent years learning control.

He refused to give Marco that satisfaction.

“You spent years manipulating people,” Adrien said.

A pause.

“You convinced yourself that made you powerful.”

Marco tilted his head.

“Did it not?”

Adrien looked at the recording device in Luca’s hand.

“No.”

The room became silent.

“You were only powerful because nobody knew the truth.”

Marco’s expression hardened.

For the first time, Elena saw fear return.

Not fear of death.

Fear of losing control.

Because Marco’s greatest weapon had always been secrecy.

And now there was nowhere left to hide.

Hours later, the city woke up to chaos.

The evidence from Marco’s operation began spreading.

Not publicly yet.

Not completely.

But enough.

Enough for powerful people to start asking questions.

Enough for allies to disappear.

Enough for the people who once stood beside Marco to realize they had chosen the wrong side.

Elena sat inside Adrien’s estate, watching the sunrise through the windows.

It felt strange.

Only days ago, she had imagined waking up as Marco Duca’s wife.

She imagined a beautiful home.

A respected position.

A future.

Now she was sitting in the home of the man her family considered an enemy.

And somehow, she felt safer than she ever had before.

Adrien entered the room.

He held two cups of coffee.

He placed one in front of her.

“You should sleep.”

Elena looked at the cup.

“You always say that.”

“Because you never listen.”

A small smile appeared on her face.

“You noticed?”

“I notice everything.”

She looked at him.

“Is that why you survived?”

Adrien sat across from her.

“Partly.”

The answer was quieter than usual.

Elena studied him.

“You believed Marco when he said your family was responsible.”

Adrien did not answer immediately.

“Yes.”

“Do you still?”

The question was difficult.

She knew that.

Because sometimes the truth was not painful because it hurt.

It was painful because it changed everything.

Adrien looked out the window.

“For years, I built my entire life around anger.”

A pause.

“I thought revenge would make losing him easier.”

Elena listened silently.

“But revenge doesn’t bring people back.”

His voice lowered.

“It only keeps you connected to the moment you lost them.”

Elena understood.

Because she had spent the last few days connected to her own loss.

The moment she heard Marco’s voice.

The moment everything changed.

“Adrien.”

He looked at her.

“You saved me.”

He shook his head slightly.

“No.”

Elena frowned.

“What?”

“You saved yourself.”

She stared at him.

“You ran. You found a way out. You came here.”

A pause.

“I only opened the door.”

Those words stayed with her.

Because nobody had ever described her strength that way.

Her entire life, people had protected her because of who her father was.

Not because of who she was.

Adrien was different.

He saw Elena.

Not the Moretti name.

Not the alliance.

Not the value she represented.

Just Elena.

Later that afternoon, Cassian Moretti arrived at the estate.

This time, Elena was ready.

She had imagined this moment many times.

Her father apologizing.

Her father explaining.

Her father admitting he had been wrong.

But reality was always more complicated.

Cassian stood across from her in the study.

For the first time, he did not look like the powerful man everyone feared.

He looked like a father who had almost lost his daughter.

“I failed you.”

Elena looked down.

Those words were harder to hear than she expected.

“I should have seen it.”

She remained quiet.

“I trusted a business arrangement more than my own instincts.”

Cassian stepped closer.

“I spent my life teaching you that power protects people.”

His voice became heavier.

“But I forgot that power without love destroys them.”

Elena looked at him.

“You almost let him take me.”

The pain on his face was immediate.

“I know.”

A long silence.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me quickly.”

Elena looked away.

Because part of her wanted to forgive him.

And another part was still hurt.

Both feelings could exist together.

“I need time.”

Cassian nodded.

“I understand.”

For the first time, he did not demand.

He did not command.

He accepted.

That evening, Adrien received unexpected news.

Luca entered the room quickly.

“Adrien.”

One look at his face was enough.

“What happened?”

“We found something.”

Adrien stood.

“What?”

Luca placed a folder on the table.

“Marco had a backup plan.”

Elena, who was nearby, immediately turned.

“What kind of backup plan?”

Luca opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

New names.

New accounts.

New locations.

Adrien’s expression became serious.

“He expected this.”

Elena felt cold.

“He knew he might fail.”

“Yes.”

Luca nodded.

“He created a second operation.”

Adrien looked at the information.

“Where?”

Luca pointed at a location.

Elena recognized the area.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

Her face had changed.

“What?”

“That place.”

She stepped closer.

“That is where my father keeps the family archives.”

Adrien’s eyes narrowed.

“What kind of archives?”

Elena swallowed.

“Everything.”

Old agreements.

Family secrets.

Information that could destroy powerful people.

Marco was not trying to escape.

He was trying to steal the one thing that could give him power again.

Adrien closed the folder.

“Then he is not finished.”

Elena looked at him.

“Neither are we.”

Adrien studied her.

The woman standing in front of him was no longer the frightened bride who arrived at his mansion.

She was someone different.

Someone stronger.

Someone who had survived betrayal, fear, and war.

Someone who was ready to fight.

Adrien nodded.

“Then we finish this.”

Outside, the city continued moving.

People believed Marco Duca’s empire was collapsing.

But Elena knew better.

A wounded enemy was often more dangerous than a powerful one.

And somewhere in the darkness, Marco Duca was making his final move.

This time, there would be no wedding.

No lies.

May you like

No escape.

Only the truth.
