Chapter 4 - The Secret Hidden Inside The Enemy’s Plan

The first thing Elena Moretti learned about Adrien Volkov was that he never wasted time.

While most people would have spent the morning discussing the impossible situation they had found themselves in, Adrien was already working.

No hesitation.

No panic.

No unnecessary questions.

By sunrise, the hidden estate had transformed into a command center.

Screens filled the private study.

Documents covered the large wooden table.

Phones rang quietly.

Men moved through the halls carrying information.

Everything happened with controlled precision.

Elena stood near the doorway, watching.

For years, she had heard stories about Adrien Volkov.

People described him as ruthless.

Cold.

A man who built his empire by destroying anyone who challenged him.

But standing there, watching him analyze every piece of information to protect someone who had been his enemy hours before, Elena realized something.

The rumors were incomplete.

Dangerous men were often more complicated than people wanted to believe.

Adrien noticed her standing there.

“You should be resting.”

Elena crossed her arms.

“I slept.”

“For two hours.”

She looked surprised.

“You counted?”

“I count everything.”

“That sounds exhausting.”

“It keeps people alive.”

Elena almost smiled.

Almost.

She walked toward the table.

“What did you find?”

Adrien turned the tablet toward her.

Photos.

Financial records.

Names.

Connections.

Elena studied the information.

“I don’t recognize these companies.”

“You wouldn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because they are not real businesses.”

Adrien pointed at several accounts.

“Marco created a network of fake companies. Money moves through them, disappears, and returns somewhere else.”

Elena frowned.

“Where?”

Adrien looked at her.

“That’s what we are trying to discover.”

She looked at the documents again.

“And you think this connects to his plan?”

“I know it does.”

His certainty caught her attention.

“How?”

Adrien picked up a photograph.

It showed Marco entering a building late at night.

“He met with people outside the Duca family.”

Elena’s expression changed.

“Who?”

Adrien placed another photo on the table.

A man she did not recognize.

“This man has been buying weapons and information for months.”

Elena felt a cold sensation.

“Marco wasn’t just trying to create a war.”

“No.”

Adrien’s voice became darker.

“He was preparing to control what remained after the war.”

The realization was terrifying.

Marco had not acted out of anger.

He had planned everything.

The marriage.

The accident.

The blame.

The destruction.

It was all a path to power.

Elena slowly sat down.

For a moment, she looked less like a mafia daughter and more like the woman who had lost everything overnight.

“He looked me in the eyes yesterday.”

Her voice became quiet.

“He told me he couldn’t wait to start our life together.”

Adrien said nothing.

“He held my hand.”

She looked at her fingers.

“The same hand he planned to bury.”

The room became silent.

Adrien watched her carefully.

He wanted to say something.

But he knew some pain could not be fixed with words.

Instead, he placed a glass of water in front of her.

A small gesture.

But Elena noticed.

Because Adrien Volkov was not a man who showed kindness easily.

“Thank you.”

He nodded once.

Then Luca entered the room.

“We have a problem.”

Adrien immediately turned.

“What happened?”

Luca placed a phone on the table.

“Cassian Moretti made a statement.”

Elena froze.

“My father?”

Luca nodded.

“He announced that you disappeared before the wedding.”

Her face changed.

“What did he say?”

Luca hesitated.

That hesitation told Elena everything.

“Tell me.”

Luca looked at the phone.

“He said anyone responsible for his daughter’s disappearance will face consequences.”

Elena looked down.

“He thinks I’m missing.”

Adrien studied her.

“Or he is pretending.”

Elena looked up.

“What do you mean?”

Adrien leaned against the table.

“Your father is not careless. If Marco told him you disappeared, Cassian would not immediately accuse anyone.”

A pause.

“He would investigate.”

Elena’s expression became uncertain.

“Then why make the statement?”

“To create pressure.”

She thought about it.

Then slowly understood.

“He wants whoever took me to reveal themselves.”

“Yes.”

Elena looked at the phone.

“So my father knows something is wrong.”

“Possibly.”

The answer gave her a small amount of hope.

But hope quickly turned into fear.

“What if he believes Marco?”

Adrien did not answer immediately.

That silence was enough.

Because it was possible.

Family loyalty could be complicated.

Especially in their world.

Luca received another message.

He checked his phone.

Then his expression changed.

“Adrien.”

Something in his voice made everyone look at him.

“What?”

“We found where Marco was last night.”

Adrien took the phone.

A location appeared.

Elena looked at it.

“Where is that?”

Luca answered.

“A private warehouse owned by a company connected to the Duca family.”

Adrien’s eyes narrowed.

“Send the team.”

Elena immediately stood.

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

The answer was immediate.

She looked at him.

“You need me.”

Adrien stared at her.

“That is exactly why you are not coming.”

“Marco knows my habits. My family. My connections. I can identify things you can’t.”

Adrien remained silent.

Elena stepped closer.

“I am not asking you to save me anymore.”

Her voice became stronger.

“I’m asking you to let me help.”

Something changed.

Because this was no longer the frightened woman who arrived at his mansion wearing a ruined wedding dress.

This was Elena Moretti.

A woman who had survived betrayal.

A woman who had looked death in the face and kept walking.

Adrien studied her for several seconds.

Finally, he looked away.

“Luca.”

“Yes?”

“Prepare a vehicle.”

Elena released a breath.

Adrien pointed at her.

“But she stays behind us.”

She frowned.

“I can handle myself.”

“I know.”

The answer surprised her.

“You do?”

Adrien looked at her.

“Someone who escapes a planned murder alone and reaches my house through a storm is not helpless.”

A pause.

“But being strong does not mean you have to stand in front of every bullet.”

For some reason, those words affected her more than she expected.

Nobody had ever said that to her.

Everyone in her world expected strength.

Nobody cared about the cost.

Two hours later, Elena sat inside another armored vehicle.

This time, she was not running.

She was searching.

The warehouse appeared abandoned from the outside.

Old walls.

Broken windows.

No signs of activity.

Which immediately made Adrien suspicious.

“Too quiet,” he said.

Elena looked at him.

“You expected that?”

“I expected a trap.”

The doors opened.

Adrien’s men moved first.

Slow.

Careful.

Elena followed behind.

Inside, the warehouse was empty.

Almost.

On the ground near the center of the room was a small box.

Adrien stopped.

Nobody moved.

Luca examined it carefully.

“It’s not explosive.”

He opened it.

Inside was a wedding photograph.

Elena’s photograph.

Her and Marco.

Taken during their engagement party.

Her stomach tightened.

Beneath the photo was a note.

Adrien picked it up.

His expression changed as he read it.

“What does it say?”

He handed it to Elena.

The message was short.

But it made her blood run cold.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED DEAD.

Elena stared at the words.

“He knows.”

Adrien looked around the warehouse.

“Yes.”

“He knows I’m alive.”

“Yes.”

Fear returned.

Not the fear of Marco.

Something worse.

The fear of what came next.

Adrien took the note from her hand.

His voice became calm.

Too calm.

“Then we change the plan.”

Elena looked at him.

“How?”

Adrien looked toward the darkness of the warehouse.

“Now Marco knows you are alive.”

A pause.

“So we make him believe he has finally found you.”

Elena understood.

They were no longer hiding.

They were hunting.

And somewhere in the city, Marco Duca was about to learn the biggest mistake he had ever made.

May you like

He had tried to turn Elena Moretti into a victim.

Instead, he created the one person who could destroy him.
