Chapter 6 - The Truth Behind The Betrayal

For a moment, nobody moved.
The entire club stood frozen.
The music had stopped.
The conversations had disappeared.
The only sound was the quiet echo of rain against the tall windows.
And in the middle of the room stood Marco Duca, staring at the woman he believed he had already erased.
Elena Moretti.
Alive.
Standing beside Adrien Volkov.
The expression on Marco’s face was the first real emotion Elena had seen from him in days.
Not confidence.
Not arrogance.
Fear.
It lasted only a second.
But Elena saw it.
And that second gave her something she had lost.
Power.
Marco slowly recovered his composure.
A smile returned to his face.
A fake one.
The same smile he had worn when he promised her forever.
“Elena.”
Her name sounded disgusting coming from him.
She stepped forward.
“You look surprised.”
Marco tilted his head slightly.
“I’m trying to understand.”
A pause.
“How are you alive?”
Elena stared at him.
The question almost made her laugh.
Not because it was funny.
Because it revealed everything.
He was not asking if she was hurt.
He was not asking where she had been.
He was asking how his plan had failed.
“I survived because you made one mistake.”
Marco’s eyes narrowed.
“And what was that?”
“You thought I was weaker than you.”
The room became silent.
Adrien stood beside her, watching every movement.
He knew Marco was dangerous.
But he also understood something important.
This moment belonged to Elena.
Marco looked around.
Then at Adrien.
“So this is where you ran.”
Elena noticed the way Marco said it.
Not afraid.
Almost amused.
“You went to my enemy.”
Adrien finally spoke.
“No.”
His voice was calm.
“She came to someone who would listen.”
Marco’s expression darkened.
“You have no idea what you are involving yourself in, Volkov.”
Adrien looked at him.
“I know exactly what I’m involved in.”
A pause.
“A man who tried to murder a woman to create a war.”
The people around Marco shifted uncomfortably.
Because accusations were dangerous.
Especially when spoken with certainty.
Marco laughed quietly.
“You believe her?”
Adrien did not answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Elena.
Then back at Marco.
“Yes.”
That simple answer carried more weight than any speech.
Because Marco understood something.
Adrien Volkov did not give trust easily.
If Adrien believed Elena, then destroying her story would be much harder.
Marco looked at Elena.
“You really told him everything?”
She smiled slightly.
“Everything you said.”
For the first time, Marco’s confidence disappeared.
“You were listening.”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“In the bridal suite.”
The color drained slightly from his face.
Because he remembered.
The conversation he thought nobody heard.
The plan he thought was perfect.
The words he thought would disappear forever.
Marco looked toward his men.
“Everyone leaves.”
Nobody moved.
That surprised him.
Adrien’s people were already positioned around the room.
Marco understood.
He was no longer controlling the situation.
Adrien was.
Marco looked back at Elena.
“You have no idea what you’ve started.”
Elena’s expression remained steady.
“I know exactly what I stopped.”
Marco stepped closer.
Adrien immediately moved slightly in front of her.
A quiet warning.
Marco noticed.
And smiled.
“So that’s what this is.”
His eyes moved between them.
“The great Adrien Volkov protecting the daughter of his enemy.”
Elena ignored the comment.
But Adrien’s expression became colder.
Marco continued.
“Interesting.”
He looked at Elena.
“Did he tell you why he hates your family?”
The question caught her attention.
Adrien immediately looked at Marco.
“Stop.”
But Marco smiled.
“Why?”
A pause.
“Afraid she will learn the truth?”
Elena turned toward Adrien.
“What is he talking about?”
Adrien said nothing.
That silence was enough.
She looked at him.
“Adrien.”
The room became heavier.
Marco enjoyed the moment.
Because even losing, he was still trying to create damage.
“Ask him.”
Elena looked at Adrien.
“Tell me.”
Adrien remained quiet.
Then finally spoke.
“Years ago, before you were old enough to know what was happening, my family lost someone.”
Elena listened.
“My younger brother.”
A pause.
“He was killed during a conflict between our families.”
Her expression changed.
“I’m sorry.”
Adrien looked away.
“I spent years believing your family was responsible.”
Marco smiled.
“There it is.”
Elena looked at him.
“What does that have to do with you?”
Marco’s smile faded slightly.
Because he knew.
She was getting closer.
Adrien looked at Marco.
“You were there.”
The accusation changed the atmosphere.
Everyone turned.
Marco remained silent.
Then laughed.
“You think I was responsible?”
Adrien stepped forward.
“I know.”
The room became still.
Elena looked between them.
Marco shook his head.
“You always were too emotional, Adrien.”
A dangerous sentence.
Because it confirmed something.
Marco knew Adrien well.
Too well.
“You spent years blaming the wrong person.”
Adrien’s jaw tightened.
Elena saw it.
The pain.
The anger.
The realization.
Marco continued.
“Your families destroyed each other because people like me pushed the right buttons.”
He looked around.
“Do you understand now?”
Nobody answered.
So he continued.
“You think I created a war between Moretti and Volkov yesterday?”
A smile appeared.
“I created one years ago.”
Elena felt a chill.
Because this was bigger than she imagined.
Marco had not simply planned her murder.
He had been manipulating both families for years.
Using old wounds.
Old hatred.
Old mistakes.
Adrien looked at Elena.
And for the first time, she saw uncertainty in his eyes.
Not about her.
About everything he believed.
Marco noticed.
And attacked.
“You and I are more alike than you think, Adrien.”
Adrien stared at him.
“We both lost people because of this war.”
A pause.
“The difference is I learned how to use it.”
Elena felt anger rising.
“You destroyed lives.”
Marco looked at her.
“I created opportunities.”
“No.”
Her voice became stronger.
“You destroyed people and called it ambition.”
For a moment, Marco actually looked at her.
Not as a tool.
Not as a piece.
As a person.
And he hated that.
Because Elena was no longer the woman he could control.
Adrien quietly touched his phone.
Luca noticed.
They had been recording everything.
Every confession.
Every word.
Marco did not realize.
Elena did.
She saw the small movement.
And understood.
They were not here to fight.
They were here to expose him.
Marco continued speaking.
“You think a recording changes anything?”
He suddenly looked toward Adrien.
“You think people will believe you?”
Adrien remained calm.
“They don’t have to.”
Marco frowned.
“What?”
Adrien looked toward the entrance.
The doors opened.
Several people entered.
Among them were representatives from both families.
And Elena’s heart stopped.
Her father.
Cassian Moretti.
He walked into the room slowly.
His expression was impossible to read.
Marco’s face changed.
Because this was not part of his plan.
Cassian looked at Elena.
For a moment, father and daughter simply stared at each other.
Elena expected anger.
Disappointment.
Questions.
Instead, she saw something else.
Regret.
“I should have listened.”
The words almost broke her.
Cassian looked at Marco.
“You planned my daughter’s murder.”
Marco immediately tried to recover.
“Cassian, you misunderstand—”
“No.”
Cassian’s voice was cold.
“For once, I understand perfectly.”
The room changed.
Because Marco finally realized.
The war he wanted to create was no longer between families.
It was against him.
Adrien stepped beside Elena.
Not in front.
Beside.
A small difference.
But Elena noticed.
Because for the first time in her life, she was not being protected because someone thought she was weak.
She was standing beside someone who believed she was strong.
Marco looked around the room.
His plan was collapsing.
His allies were silent.
His lies were exposed.
But Elena knew him.
A man like Marco Duca did not surrender easily.
He had spent years building his empire.
He would not let it disappear in one night.
Marco looked directly at her.
And smiled.
Not the fake smile from before.
Something colder.
Something dangerous.
“This is not over.”
Elena held his gaze.
“No.”
She stepped forward.
“It is.”
Because for the first time since her wedding day, Elena Moretti was no longer running.
She was standing.
May you like
And Marco Duca finally understood the truth.
The woman he tried to bury had become the person who would bring him down.
