Chapter 3 - The Safe House Behind Enemy Lines

Elena Moretti had always believed that fear had a sound.

Sometimes it was the sound of a locked door.

Sometimes it was the sound of footsteps following behind you.

Sometimes it was the silence after someone you trusted said something unforgivable.

But that night, sitting inside Adrien Volkov’s armored vehicle while the storm attacked the city outside, Elena discovered something worse.

Fear could be completely silent.

She sat in the back seat, staring through the rain-covered window as the city lights disappeared behind them.

The wedding she was supposed to remember forever was already becoming a distant nightmare.

The cathedral.

The flowers.

The guests.

Marco’s smile.

Everything felt like a different lifetime.

Only hours had passed.

Yet Elena felt like she had aged years.

Across from her, Adrien sat calmly, reading information on a tablet Luca had provided before they left the mansion.

He looked completely unaffected.

The same cold expression.

The same controlled breathing.

The same impossible calm.

Elena wondered if anything could truly shake Adrien Volkov.

“You always look like you already know what happens next.”

Adrien looked up.

“What?”

She immediately regretted speaking.

But she continued.

“Everyone around you is afraid. Your guards. Your enemies. Even people who work for you.”

She looked at the tablet in his hands.

“But you just sit there like nothing surprises you.”

Adrien returned his attention to the screen.

“Being surprised gets people killed.”

Elena looked away.

“That sounds lonely.”

The words came out before she could stop them.

For a moment, Adrien said nothing.

Then he looked back at her.

“You think powerful people are lonely?”

“I think people who never trust anyone are.”

The vehicle became quiet.

Elena expected him to dismiss the comment.

Instead, he simply looked outside.

“You learn not to trust when everyone who gets close eventually wants something.”

The answer was simple.

But there was something behind it.

A history.

A wound.

Elena recognized it because she carried one too.

She had spent her entire life surrounded by people who wanted something from her.

Her last name.

Her father’s influence.

The alliance her marriage would create.

Even Marco had never wanted Elena.

He wanted what she represented.

For the first time in years, someone was looking at her without seeing the Moretti name first.

Even if that person was Adrien Volkov.

The car slowed.

Elena looked outside.

They were no longer in the city.

The tall buildings had disappeared.

The streets became quieter.

“Where are we going?”

“A location Marco does not know exists.”

She looked at him.

“You have places hidden from everyone?”

Adrien gave a small glance toward her.

“I have places hidden from people who try to kill me.”

A few minutes later, the vehicle stopped in front of a large private estate surrounded by trees.

It was nothing like the mansion.

There were no obvious signs of power.

No intimidating entrance.

No visible guards.

It looked peaceful.

Almost normal.

That somehow made Elena more suspicious.

“Normal places are usually the best hiding places,” Adrien said, noticing her expression.

“You read minds?”

“No.”

A pause.

“You are easy to understand.”

Elena raised an eyebrow.

“Is that supposed to be an insult?”

“No.”

For a second, something almost like a smile appeared on his face.

Almost.

The doors opened.

A woman in her fifties approached them.

Elena immediately noticed something different.

This woman was not afraid of Adrien.

Everyone else looked at him like he was a storm approaching.

This woman looked at him like he was simply a person.

“Adrien.”

Her voice was calm.

“You brought trouble again.”

Adrien nodded.

“She needs protection.”

The woman looked at Elena.

Not at her dress.

Not at her family name.

At her.

“You poor thing.”

Those three words nearly broke Elena.

Because they were the first words anyone had said to her all night that sounded like kindness.

The woman noticed her expression.

“I’m Sofia.”

Elena slowly nodded.

“Elena.”

“I know.”

Of course she knew.

Everyone knew.

But Sofia said her name differently.

Without judgment.

Without fear.

Adrien stepped inside.

“Sofia, she stays here until we know who Marco has working with him.”

Sofia looked at him.

“You’re serious.”

“Yes.”

“You are protecting Cassian Moretti’s daughter.”

“Yes.”

Sofia studied him for a moment.

Then looked at Elena again.

“Interesting.”

Elena frowned.

“What?”

Sofia smiled slightly.

“I’ve known Adrien for fifteen years.”

Elena looked at Adrien.

“He rarely changes his mind.”

Adrien ignored the comment.

“Sofia.”

The woman laughed quietly.

“Fine. I’ll prepare a room.”

As Sofia walked away, Elena watched Adrien.

“You trust her.”

“Yes.”

“She’s one of the few people.”

“Yes.”

Elena thought about that.

Then asked:

“Why?”

Adrien looked at her.

“Because she proved she deserved it.”

Simple.

But Elena understood.

Trust was not something Adrien gave.

It was something people earned.

Hours later, Elena stood in front of a mirror inside the guest room.

She barely recognized herself.

The wedding dress was gone.

Sofia had found simple clothes for her.

A dark sweater.

Comfortable pants.

Nothing expensive.

Nothing connected to her family.

Nothing that made her look like a mafia princess.

Just Elena.

She sat on the edge of the bed.

And suddenly, the exhaustion arrived.

The danger.

The betrayal.

The realization that the man she was supposed to marry wanted her dead.

Everything crashed down at once.

She covered her face.

For the first time that night, she allowed herself to cry.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just silent tears from someone who had been forced to stay strong for too long.

A knock came at the door.

Elena quickly wiped her face.

“Come in.”

Adrien stood outside.

He did not enter.

“I received information.”

Her heart immediately tightened.

“What happened?”

“Marco has already started searching for you.”

Elena stood.

“How?”

“He told people you disappeared before the ceremony.”

A cold feeling moved through her.

“He’s pretending to be worried.”

“Yes.”

Adrien looked at her.

“That makes him more dangerous.”

Elena walked closer.

“Did he tell my father?”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because he wants time.”

She understood.

Marco wanted the perfect story.

A grieving fiancé.

A missing bride.

A rival to blame.

Adrien continued.

“He needs your body to complete the plan.”

The words were brutal.

But Elena needed the truth.

“Then we need to make him think he succeeded.”

Adrien looked at her carefully.

“What are you suggesting?”

Elena took a breath.

“Everyone believes I ran away because I was scared.”

A pause.

“But if Marco believes I’m already dead, he will reveal his next move.”

Adrien studied her.

“You want to use yourself as bait.”

“I want to stop him.”

“No.”

The answer came instantly.

Elena blinked.

“No?”

“No.”

His voice remained calm.

“But you’re willing to risk everyone else?”

Adrien stepped closer.

“You just escaped a man who planned your murder. You do not get to walk back into danger because you think you have something to prove.”

The intensity surprised her.

Elena stared at him.

“Why do you care?”

The question hung between them.

Adrien became silent.

For the first time, Elena saw him without the armor.

Not the mafia boss.

Not the feared enemy.

Just a man trying to decide how much truth he wanted to reveal.

“Because someone should have protected you before you reached my door.”

Elena said nothing.

Those words affected her more than she expected.

Because she realized something.

Adrien was not protecting her because she was valuable.

He was protecting her because someone had failed her.

A sound from the hallway interrupted them.

Sofia appeared.

“Adrien.”

He turned.

“We found something.”

The change in his expression was immediate.

“What?”

Sofia held a file.

“The Duca family has been moving money through several hidden accounts.”

Adrien took the file.

Elena watched him open it.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Transaction records.

And one name repeated again and again.

Marco Duca.

Adrien’s expression became colder.

“He wasn’t planning only a murder.”

Elena stepped closer.

“What else?”

Adrien looked at her.

“He was building something.”

The room became silent.

Because suddenly they understood.

Elena’s wedding was not the beginning of Marco’s plan.

It was only the first move.

Adrien closed the file.

“Tomorrow, we find out exactly what Marco Duca is preparing.”

Elena looked at the documents.

Then at Adrien.

For the first time since running away, she felt something she had almost forgotten.

Hope.

But hope was dangerous.

May you like

Because hope made people believe they could win.

And Marco Duca had no idea that the woman he thought he had eliminated was now standing beside the one man powerful enough to destroy him.
