Chapter 2 - The Enemy Who Chose To Believe Her

Elena Moretti had spent her entire life being taught one simple rule.
Never trust your enemy.
Her father repeated it whenever she was young enough to sit on his office desk and watch powerful men walk in and out of their family headquarters.
“Enemies don’t become friends,” Cassian Moretti would tell her. “They only become more dangerous when they pretend to be.”
For years, Elena believed him.
Until the night her enemy became the only person who listened.
The silence inside Adrien Volkov’s mansion felt heavier than the storm outside.
The guards had lowered their weapons, but Elena could still feel the tension surrounding her.
She was standing in the middle of a place where she should never have been welcomed.
The daughter of Cassian Moretti.
The rival family.
The woman wearing a destroyed wedding dress.
The person who had walked straight into the lion’s den and asked the lion for protection.
It made no sense.
And yet Adrien Volkov was still looking at her as if he was trying to understand a mystery.
Not a threat.
A mystery.
“Everyone leaves,” Adrien said.
His voice was quiet.
But every person in the room obeyed immediately.
The guards disappeared into the shadows.
The massive entrance hall became empty except for Elena and Adrien.
For the first time since arriving, Elena realized how exhausted she truly was.
Her adrenaline began to fade.
Her hands started shaking.
She quickly lowered them, hoping he would not notice.
He did.
Adrien noticed everything.
“You haven’t eaten today.”
It was not a question.
Elena frowned slightly.
“What?”
“Your hands are shaking,” he said. “Your breathing is uneven. You have been running for hours.”
She looked away.
“I’m fine.”
Adrien’s expression remained unchanged.
“People who are fine don’t arrive at their enemy’s home wearing a wedding dress covered in mud.”
The words should have embarrassed her.
Instead, they almost made her laugh.
Almost.
Because he was right.
She looked down at herself.
The beautiful gown she had spent months creating was barely recognizable.
The bottom was torn.
The delicate lace was stained.
The long veil that had once made her feel like a princess now dragged behind her like a reminder of everything she had lost.
“I didn’t have another choice,” Elena whispered.
Adrien studied her.
“Most people would have gone to their family.”
“My family is the reason I couldn’t.”
That answer caught his attention.
Elena saw it.
A small change.
A slight narrowing of his eyes.
He was listening.
So she continued.
“My father spent months arranging this marriage. The Duca family was supposed to become our strongest ally.”
She swallowed.
“To him, Marco wasn’t just my fiancé. He was a business decision.”
Adrien walked slowly toward one of the marble columns, keeping distance between them.
“And you believe your father would ignore an attempt on your life?”
Elena hesitated.
That hesitation told him more than any answer.
“My father loves me,” she said softly.
Then she looked at him.
“But powerful men sometimes love their families and still sacrifice them for something bigger.”
For the first time, Adrien’s expression changed.
Not much.
Just enough for Elena to notice.
A memory.
A wound.
Something hidden behind his cold exterior.
“You sound like someone who has learned that lesson before,” she said.
Adrien looked away.
“That is not your concern.”
The answer was sharp.
A warning.
Elena immediately understood.
There were walls around this man.
Thick ones.
Built over years.
She decided not to push.
Instead, she focused on survival.
“What happens now?”
Adrien looked back at her.
“Now, we find out if you are telling the truth.”
Elena’s jaw tightened.
“You still doubt me.”
“I doubt everyone.”
“That must be exhausting.”
“It keeps me alive.”
The honesty of his answer surprised her.
Before Elena could respond, one of the mansion doors opened.
A man in his late thirties entered carrying a tablet.
He had the calm appearance of someone who had spent years working beside dangerous people.
“Adrien.”
His eyes moved toward Elena.
He immediately understood the situation.
“This is unexpected.”
Adrien looked at him.
“Luca, check everything she told us.”
The man nodded.
“Everything?”
“Everything.”
Luca glanced at Elena.
“The wedding. The Duca family. The conversations. All of it?”
“Yes.”
Elena watched them carefully.
“You believe me?”
Adrien answered without looking at her.
“I believe there is a possibility you are telling the truth.”
It was not comfort.
It was not kindness.
But strangely, it was enough.
Because after hearing Marco plan her death, Elena did not need promises.
She needed someone willing to search for the truth.
Luca stepped closer.
“One question.”
Elena looked at him.
“Why did you come here?”
The question was simple.
But the answer carried everything.
“Because Marco wants my death to start a war between two families.”
She paused.
“And because Adrien Volkov is the only person powerful enough that my father cannot simply destroy him.”
Luca looked at Adrien.
A small expression passed between them.
They both understood the danger.
If Marco succeeded, thousands of people could die.
Not because of hatred.
Because of manipulation.
Adrien walked toward the large windows overlooking the estate.
Rain covered the glass.
The city beyond looked distant and cold.
“Marco Duca has always been ambitious,” Adrien said.
Elena watched him carefully.
“You know him?”
“Everyone knows him.”
Adrien turned slightly.
“He is patient. Calculating. He does not attack when people are watching.”
A pause.
“He waits until everyone thinks they are safe.”
Elena felt a chill.
Because that was exactly what Marco had done.
He had smiled at her.
Held her hand.
Promised her a future.
While planning her death.
Adrien continued.
“The question is why now.”
Elena looked confused.
“What do you mean?”
“Your marriage would have connected the Moretti and Duca families.”
He turned toward her.
“Marco would gain influence. Power. Protection.”
Adrien’s eyes sharpened.
“Why destroy something that benefits him?”
Elena thought about it.
Then slowly understood.
“Because he doesn’t want to share power.”
Adrien nodded.
“Exactly.”
She walked closer.
“After my father and your family destroy each other, Marco becomes the only remaining power.”
The realization settled between them.
A plan bigger than her.
Bigger than a wedding.
Bigger than two families.
Adrien’s phone suddenly rang.
He answered immediately.
“Speak.”
A few seconds passed.
His expression changed slightly.
Not fear.
Anger.
“Send me the footage.”
He ended the call.
Elena noticed.
“What happened?”
Adrien looked at the tablet Luca had just received.
“Your wedding.”
Her heart stopped.
“What about it?”
Luca connected the device to the screen in the room.
A security recording appeared.
The cathedral.
The guests.
The decorations.
The ceremony that never happened.
Then Elena saw Marco.
Standing at the entrance.
Smiling.
Acting like a man who had just lost his bride.
But then the camera angle changed.
A few minutes later, when Marco believed no one was watching, his expression transformed.
The sadness disappeared.
The concern disappeared.
Only satisfaction remained.
Elena felt sick.
“He knew I escaped.”
Adrien watched silently.
The footage continued.
Marco leaned toward one of his men and spoke.
The audio was unclear.
Luca enhanced it.
The room filled with Marco’s voice.
“She won’t make it far.”
Elena froze.
Marco continued.
“Once they find her, everything begins.”
Adrien’s eyes became colder.
Luca stopped the recording.
Nobody spoke.
Because now they had something Elena did not have before.
Proof.
Adrien looked at Elena.
And for the first time, she saw something different in his eyes.
Not suspicion.
Not curiosity.
Protection.
“You were telling the truth.”
Elena looked down.
The words should have relieved her.
Instead, they made her realize something terrifying.
The man standing in front of her was now involved.
Adrien Volkov was no longer just the enemy she ran to.
He was now Marco Duca’s enemy too.
And anyone who stood against Marco became a target.
“I’m sorry,” Elena whispered.
Adrien looked at her.
“For what?”
“For bringing this to your door.”
A moment passed.
Then Adrien gave a quiet answer.
“You didn’t bring danger to my door, Elena.”
He looked toward the screen showing Marco’s face.
“Danger was already coming.”
The storm outside grew louder.
And somewhere across the city, Marco Duca believed his plan was still perfect.
He believed Elena Moretti was either dead or trapped.
He believed the two most powerful families in the city were about to destroy each other.
But he had made one mistake.
He underestimated the woman he planned to kill.
And he underestimated the man she chose as her last hope.
Adrien turned back to Elena.
“Tonight, you disappear.”
She looked at him.
“Where?”
A faint coldness returned to his expression.
“Somewhere Marco cannot reach you.”
Elena hesitated.
“And if he finds out you’re protecting me?”
Adrien stepped closer.
The answer came without hesitation.
“Then he learns why people are afraid of me.”
For the first time that night, Elena believed she might survive.
But she also knew something else.
Survival was only the beginning.
May you like
Because now they had to uncover the truth.
Before Marco Duca turned an entire city into a battlefield.
