Chapter 11 - The Truth About Fiona's Birth

The document fell onto the table as I whispered: "My mother signed this?" When Adrian Vale examined the original birth record, he discovered a hidden agreement attached to Fiona's medical file. But one sentence changed everything: "Guardian authorization transferred to Evelyn Carter." Adrian realized my mother had been protecting a secret before Fiona was even born.

I stared at the document.

My mother's name.

Written in black ink.

A signature I recognized.

A signature that had been part of my childhood.

The same hand that signed my school forms.

My medical papers.

My birthday cards.

The same hand that now appeared on a document connected to the biggest secret of my life.

"No."

The word escaped my mouth.

Nobody moved.

My mother looked away.

That was the worst part.

Not the signature.

Not the document.

Her silence.

Because silence was confirmation.

"You knew."

My voice was barely above a whisper.

"Evelyn."

She looked at me.

"I can explain."

I laughed.

A painful, empty sound.

"Everyone says that."

I picked up the document.

"Everyone always has an explanation after they destroy everything."

"Blaire..."

"No."

I looked at the paper again.

"Tell me why your name is here."

My mother closed her eyes.

For a moment, she looked like the woman I remembered.

The woman who held me when I was sick.

The woman who made me feel safe.

Then I remembered.

She left.

She disappeared.

She knew.

And she said nothing.

"I signed it because I was afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

She looked at Fiona.

"Of losing you both."

I felt my chest tighten.

"You lost me anyway."

The words hurt her.

I saw it.

But I needed her to hear it.

"I spent six years thinking everyone abandoned me."

My voice shook.

"I thought Daniel left."

I looked at Daniel.

"I thought Ethan was the only person who wanted our family."

Then Adrian.

"I thought you were just another stranger who knew more about my life than me."

My mother started crying.

"And the entire time..."

I looked at the document.

"The people who loved me were the people keeping secrets from me."

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody could argue.

The truth was sitting in front of us.

Daniel slowly walked toward the table.

"Why did you sign this?"

My mother looked at him.

"I was there the night Fiona was born."

Daniel froze.

"I know."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

My mother's hands trembled.

"I knew you were Fiona's father."

Daniel looked shocked.

"Then why did you help Ethan?"

She shook her head.

"I didn't."

The room became silent.

"I thought I was signing a protection agreement."

She pointed at the document.

"Ethan told me Fiona was in danger."

My eyes narrowed.

"He lied."

"Yes."

My mother nodded.

"He said powerful people were trying to hurt her."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Who?"

My mother looked at him.

"At the time, I thought he meant Daniel."

Daniel's expression changed.

"But he meant himself."

She nodded.

"Ethan was always afraid someone would expose him."

I looked at Adrian.

"The money."

He nodded.

"The accounts."

Daniel continued.

"The evidence."

Everything connected.

Ethan wasn't trying to protect Fiona.

He was trying to protect himself.

But something still bothered me.

I looked at the document.

"Guardian authorization transferred to my mother."

I pointed.

"Why?"

Nobody answered.

Then Clara spoke.

"Because Ethan needed someone he could control."

Everyone looked at her.

She lowered her head.

"He knew he couldn't control Blaire forever."

I felt my stomach turn.

"But he could control Evelyn."

My mother looked ashamed.

"He threatened me."

"How?"

She looked at Fiona.

"He said if I didn't cooperate, he would tell the court I was unstable."

My heart sank.

"He would take Fiona."

My mother nodded.

"And he knew I would do anything to protect her."

I looked at Fiona.

The little girl sitting quietly.

Holding her stuffed bunny.

Watching adults talk about her like she was something fragile.

I walked over and hugged her.

She immediately wrapped her arms around me.

"Mommy."

"I'm here."

"Are you sad?"

My eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

She touched my face.

"Don't cry."

That almost broke me.

Because after everything...

After every lie...

My daughter was still trying to comfort me.

Adrian watched quietly.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed almost immediately.

"What?"

A pause.

"Are you sure?"

He looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

"What happened?"

He ended the call.

"Ethan's legal team filed an emergency custody request."

My blood ran cold.

"What?"

"He is claiming Fiona is his biological daughter."

Daniel stepped forward.

"But the DNA proves otherwise."

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why?"

Adrian looked at the document.

"Because he has another piece of evidence."

"What evidence?"

He hesitated.

I hated that hesitation.

"What?"

Adrian looked at me.

"A recording."

My heart stopped.

"Of what?"

He took a breath.

"A conversation between you and Ethan."

I frowned.

"I don't remember any recording."

"Because you didn't know you were being recorded."

The room became cold.

"What did I say?"

Adrian looked down.

"The recording makes it appear that you admitted Ethan was Fiona's father."

I stared at him.

"No."

My voice became quiet.

"I never said that."

"I know."

"Then how?"

Adrian looked at Daniel.

Daniel's face changed.

Because he understood before I did.

A recording could be edited.

A voice could be manipulated.

A truth could be rewritten.

Just like everything else.

"He planned this."

Daniel whispered.

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

My phone suddenly buzzed.

Everyone looked.

Unknown number.

Again.

My hands shook as I answered.

Nobody spoke.

A man's voice came through.

Ethan.

"Blaire."

I closed my eyes.

"What do you want?"

A quiet laugh.

"You found everyone, didn't you?"

I didn't answer.

"You found Daniel."

Silence.

"You found Clara."

My grip tightened.

"And you found out your mother helped hide the truth."

I looked at my mother.

Ethan continued.

"But you still don't know the most important part."

My heart sank.

"What?"

His voice became softer.

Almost gentle.

"The reason Fiona was created."

Nobody moved.

"What are you talking about?"

A pause.

Then Ethan said:

"You think Fiona was born because you and Daniel loved each other."

I froze.

"But that's not why she exists."

The room went silent.

"Then why?"

Ethan whispered:

"Because your mother and I needed her to save us."

My blood ran cold.

Before I could respond, the call ended.

A new message appeared.

A photo.

Not of Ethan.

Not of Daniel.

Not of Fiona.

A photo of my mother.

Standing in a hospital room the night Fiona was born.

And beside her was someone I never expected to see.

May you like

My mother was not alone that night.

She was standing next to the person who ordered Daniel's disappearance.
